John Lennon called them "Son of Beatles" which was quite a compliment! Great songs by ELO: "Do Ya", "Shine A Little Love", "Don't Bring Me Down", "Can't Get It Out of My Head", "Showdown", "Surrender", "Mr. Blue Sky" (perhaps the most happy and positive rock song ever!), "Turn To Stone", "So Fine", "Last Train To London", and many, many other great songs!

In reality the happiest rock song is "Walking on Sunshine" by Katrina and the Waves. But, I'll give you "Mr. Blue Sky" as a close runner-up. That's just my opinion. YMMV.

I was born in 1962. This is my favorite group. My generation had never heard anything like this group and I was astounded to hear a sound like this. Now remember back then you only heard it on the radio so you had to listen for hours in hopes that you would hear your favorite songs. I remember changing the radio channels in hopes that I would hear this incredible group. Can you imagine finally catching it but at the very end just as your channel was ending it, just crying and waiting and hoping for hours to hear it again!!! We only had four channels on the radio. Country, 2 pop and one r and b which went off at 6pm. Everyone tells me that I should do a you tube channel on all the 70's music groups and how times were then. I am so excited to see your generation discover them. Back in the days when candy was 2 for a penny, concerts were 5 dollars a ticket ( Im talking the jackson 5, prince, rick james etc), a bag of chips and soda were a quarter, a brand new car was less than $3,000. The sun shined brighter and love was more innocent. One gift I was blessed with is the ability to take a song and be able to put you in a place where you feel like you were there at that time,.

If you were lucky enough to have a quarter, you thought you won the jackpot for that bag of mixed candy!!! I was in highschool when my friends and I found ELO. The talent of a group who can mix so many elements from genre to instruments was unheard of then. Then to call yourself Electric Light Orchestra!!!!!!! Brilliant, simply brilliant. I am going to my Highschool reunion in November back from our Graduating class of 79/80. I hope they play some of these guys.

@@kev7161 Being, "a highly successful band with a ton of hits" is not a valid counter-argument to the statement, "his vocals are so underrated". From my perspective, ELO were well known for their catchy songs and novel approach with the inclusion of string instruments. But I don't recall anyone ever citing Jeff Lynne as being one of the great or even very good vocalists when the subject of "best singers" comes up. So based upon this, I don't think Frank Bianco's statement was necessarily unwarranted. But I might be open to a different counter-argument, if you have one.

Groups like ELO, Chicago, Supertramp etc were referred to back in the day as supergroups because they were all comprised entirely of very accomplished musicians who were always trying to one-up each other. They put the classic in classic rock!
@michaelmcgowen8780
@michaelmcgowen8780 2 жыл бұрын
No, you are mistaken. A supergroup is a musical group whose members are successful as solo artists or as members of other successful groups, such as Blind Faith; Beck, Bogert & Appice; Bad Company; Asia, The Firm, The Highwaymen; Bad English; Traveling Wilburys; Damn Yankees; and Chickenfoot.
@Hexon66
@Hexon66 2 жыл бұрын
@@michaelmcgowen8780 I think you're being a bit generous with the term as well. Wilburys, Highwaymen, maybe Blind Faith. But even then with BF, it's too contemporaneous with their other projects. There has to be a distance of time to build legendary status. And if we're being honest, the greatest supergroups ought to be considered The Funk Brothers, Wrecking Crew and the A Team.
@michaelmcgowen8780
@michaelmcgowen8780 2 жыл бұрын
@@Hexon66 I used the definition of the term as I've seen it used by music critics and the music press over the last 50 years. What is applicable is where the members of these groups were in a previous group, or were solo artists, that had popular or commercial success. With Beck, Bogert & Appice, for example, Jeff Beck was known for his time with The Yardbirds, while Tim Bogert & Carmn Appice were members of Vanilla Fudge. With Bad Company, Paul Rodgers & Simon Kirke came from the band Free, Mick Ralphs from Mott The Hoople, and Boz Burrell from King Crimson.

Back in the 70's we didn't have all the access to see these bands. I went to their concerts. First of three times I saw this band I was blown away. Chicago I saw many times. Live in concert they were great

Chicage, ELO, and others like them are known as Arena Rock bands. Their sound filled the arenas and blasted your mind with such groovy sounds. Also, their LIGHT SHOWS were phenom. ELO especially excelled at this.

ELO is considered “Symphonic Rock” with violin, 2 Cello’s, keyboard/ synthesizer guitars and drums. They were one of the first to use the vocoder.

Oh yes. ELO can't be beat for beautiful orchestral supremecy. The blend of rock and roll with the beautiful instruments and masterful application of lyrics, and Jeff Lynne's powerful voice is unbeatable. Hit after hit. Each one so special. Love your reaction. The first concert that I ever went to was ELO at the Municipal Auditorium in Nashville, Tennessee. In 1981. My dad was a huge fan and wanted to take me to see them because he loved them so much. 41 years later they're still one of my favorites. RIP dad.

I sincerely enjoy watching your reactions, it is so nice to see the joy and surprise legendary music can inspire in those who can genuinely appreciate it! ELO, SuperTramp, Chicago and I would add Queen to that list and there are certainly other but it is a very small list for sure. But Id like to introduce you to a bad that reminds me very much of them and might even deserve a spot on this list. When I first heard this song it reminded me very much of Queen! The band is MUSE, the song is "Knights of Cydonia". I went on to listen to another of their songs "New Born" and it brought tears to my eyes because it reminded me so much of Queen as well. I thought I would never hear newer music that even came close to these legends and I was so happy to have been proven wrong. So I really hope you listen to Knights of Cydonia and you love them as much as I do!

My suggestion is TELEPHONE LINE by E.L.O.!! I'd almost forgotten this one. Nice to hear it again. P.S. Not all bands can be put in a box. Chicago has gone through several genres. E.L.O. does remind me more of Supertramp.

ELO laid the foundation for an era of awesome music. Just hearing this song brings me back to when I was 12, careless and carefree. Disco halls in the late 70s were short lived but they were a great place for young people to gather and get through those awkward social years.

In a word... Rock. Hard, soft, acid, pop, surf, disco (pop for dancing), easy listening, blues, swing or psychedelic... It's all Rock n Roll! Hear them all and find several you like and perhaps one you love. Trust me, there's plenty of ways to blend them, so just listen and enjoy without pigeon-holing them. Oh! And don't forget, I'd still love for you to check out Dire Straits 'Wild West End' for some soft-swung-bluesy-easy listening... Rock, with lyrics that paint a picture you will see when you close your eyes and bring back memories of teens-twenties. :)
