Theo Fleury was listed at 5’5 155 lbs on his rookie card. He tied Joe Sakic for the WHL scoring league. Sakic was a first rounder, Theo was taken in the eighth round. Small players everywhere were being passed over until he forced his way into the NHL. St. Louis, Gaudreau, Kane, etc. wouldn’t have been taken seriously if Theo hadn’t been such a dominant player.

So many short players in different sports have been snubbed for their height. I can’t imagine what it must feel like to put up numbers and have great stats but then when they see how tall you are, you get rejected. You would think that your high stats would show that your height doesn’t effect you at all. It actually has been proven that shorter players have a better centre of gravity, therefore making it easier to make fast manoeuvres. Which is a HUGE advantage over very tall players.

I remember when Rick Nash demanded a trade out of Columbus and forced his way into the Rangers team and the Columbus fans turned on him for a while and whenever those teams played there were some loud boos. A mini rivalry did grow between those teams for the years Nash was on the Rangers but last I heard he was a director for the CBJ so at least the breakup didn’t get too sour.

The one I remember most is Yashin in Ottawa. Two contract holdouts. Taking back a donation to the Museum of Art in Ottawa. A lot of goodwill lost even though he actually played pretty well for the Senators for the most part. My first hockey game in person was his return to Ottawa, and got booed mercilessly. At least Ottawa got something good back for him when he got traded.

Also loved the bit about St.Louis, he was the player that got me into watching hockey. as mentioned his size and skill was unusual at the time and made me gain interest. I had the choice much later when buying a jersey between St.Louis or Stamkos(when Stamkos first started). It was a tough choice, me being young me at the time chose Stamkos. A nice jersey of Stammer without even an A on it. Still would of loved a St.Louis jersey though, the man was a beast in his entire career.

Isles fans were right to be pissed off and it wasn't just with Tavares as ownership obviously mishandled the situation equally as terrible as Tavares. I remember fans pooled money together to have a "Fire Snow" billboard put up and Tavares using his NTC against the Isles as well as the media statements.... The pyjama photo the day of the signing after allegedly having a mental breakdown deciding between NYI and TOR was a little salt in the wound. for Isles fans. That said, definitely a blessing in disguise. Saved a giant cap hit, forced ownership reform and ended up bringing in Barry Trotz. 3 playoffs and 2 Conference Finals since says it all.

I understand both sides of the "upset about the way he left" argument. If you're leaving to go to a new team because you're upset after giving 9 years to a team that you haven't had any success would you a) tell them you're going to leave, resulting in the team you're going to sacrificing assets in order to get you and thus having a harder time succeeding or b) tell them you're not going to leave so your new team doesn't have to sacrifice assets? If you want to succeed option b makes more sense. That being said, if you want to succeed then perhaps you should look somewhere other than Toronto but that's a different question. Obviously I can understand from Isles fans being upset that you lost a big asset and got nothing in return because he misled you as well.

Great video as usual but in regard to Martin St- Louis, as great as he was, he didn't set thr precedent for small hockey players. In the 1960s, 5'5" Yvan Cournoyer broke into the NHL with the Montreal Canadiens. The first player to beat Wayne Gretzky for the league scoring title was 5'8" Marcel Dionne. Denis Savard was overlooked by the Montreal Canadiens in favour of Doug Wickenheiser (ht. 6'4"), Denis Savard was 5'8" (someone please correct me if I'm wrong). It is unfortunate however that even today a big man tends to be favoured over the small man. But at the top levels of any sport, minute differences at lower levels become HUGE.

what's misunderstood ab JT is that in 16-17 the isles missed by ONE POINT, they had the tiebreaker with Toronto and if they had gotten one point (like hickey not kicking it in his own net with 30 seconds left) that would of gotten them 3 straight playoff appearances and 4 in 5 years, that totally changes the talk around the team. Also he really wanted to stay, it was only the pitch by Toronto that he didnt even want to be at until his agent convinced him that he was swayed, but who knows if the islanders do what they did these last 2 years without the extra cap space his departure afforded them

From someone in the know who covers the Islanders regularly, this is what happened. Tavares was approached by Isles management the year before his contract was up and they gave him a great offer. But he didn't sign. At that point, then GM Garth Snow told the Islanders owners that he was going to trade him because it was obvious he wasn't going to sign with us and he didn't want an asset like that to walk out the door with nothing to show. Owners did not want to trade him and they proceeded to have a "heart to heart" with Tavares and his agent. They constructed a handshake deal that Tavares would test the free agent waters to make sure he was getting a fair market price from Isles but that he would sign with them. Tavares asked Islanders NOT to trade him. However, between that time and the time his contract expired, he got engaged. His fiancee' and both families put a lot of pressure on him to sign with his hometown team. Plus Toronto convinced him that Islanders would never get a new building as they had been talking about that for years. They would just be the same old Islanders forever. So he went back on his word and signed with Leafs. Supposedly, Lamoriello knew the week prior that Tavares wouldn't sign and they had already moved on. The bottom line is that Tavares was 100% dishonest in his dealings with Islander management. Having said that, I did not like the "we don't need you" chants as having Tavares could have been enough extra for us to beat the Lightning. I wonder if St. Louis coaching Montréal and Yzerman as Detroit's GM is going to lead to some rivalry. These are both Original 6 teams. Over the past few years while Detroit has been rebuilding and even before Yzerplan was GM, the Canadiens would run up the score on Detroit (while both franchises were middle of the line at best). Then look to a couple days ago with the Slafkovsky hit on Matt Luff which harkens back to the Lemieux hit on Draper (frankly if I were LaLonde I'd have had my bench go ape**** on Montréal after that hit - but of course Bertuzzi's injured and G. Smith is in GR). St. Louis hasn't even spoken on the matter to my knowledge and while Slaf gets a 2 game suspension, Luff is out for weeks and this is just after recovering from another facial injury - frankly I don't think the suspension was long enough seeing the hit on replay. Anyway stuff like this is what hockey beef is made of!

I'm sure Marty wanting to be up in Connecticut with his family had something to do with wanting out of Tampa, but probably only influenced his choice of team. Think he was just done with Yzerman, which sucks that it kept him from retiring as a Bolt. Marty knew he was at the end of his career and was retired by the end of the following season. Honestly it was sweet justice that TBL knocked the Rangers out in the ECF that year. That was the point where I forgave him honestly. Plus him leaving probably helped build TBL into what they are today.

I think as a goalie, Roy was as influential to the game as Gretzky and Lemieux. I know that's a HUGE statement (and btw I'm a Wings fan, so this is huge just for me to say it but nevertheless...). If you look at goal tending before and after Roy and the average GAA, shutouts, etc. The game significantly changed from when Roy entered the league. Also if you consider where he was when he started, he came into the league during the prime Gretzky-Lemieux years; he was basically Superman's Kryptonite. Since Roy, the innovation of the butterfly, the size of pads, and the aggressiveness of net minders has significantly changed. As skilled as the league is now with guys like McDavid and Matthews, these guys' numbers would be middle of the line in the 80s/90s (granted the game is significantly different on MANY levels). I believe this has much to do with defensive systems and goaltending that was started by supreme net minders like Roy and Brodeur (both of whom were Red Wing killers in the 90s as some point).

Also the Canadiens haven't been the same since the Roy trade whereas the Avs have won 3 or 4 Stanley Cups and this is after moving from Québec. As much as I love Cole Caufield and think he might be the next Patrick Kane for US born players - the 2021 finals was a definite fluke. Without the league restructuring due to Covid, I don't think they'd have even made the playoffs let alone the finals. And even then, they got smoked. We'll see what this new gen has in store, they're definitely building but you could say the same for Edmonton or Toronto and they've both been "re"building for a decade without any cups or even finals appearances. Again - the Roy trade broke the NHL's historically best franchise.

St. Louis is not a reason that Caufield and Gaudreau exist in the NHL - or if so he may be merely ONE reason. There have been quite a few smaller players, like Ted Lindsay, Henri Richard, Yvan Cournoyer, Theo Fleury, and Brian Gionta - just to name a few - who were extraordinary players.

With the team Canada “snub” you have to remember Canada has some of the greatest players to ever play the game. When building a team you can’t just stack it with talent and go. Specially with the skill level of the Russian and American teams being as good as they are. They built a team. Made selections based on having limited time to get them to play as a team. Which is why there were entire lines from nhl teams brought in to play for team Canada. But hey when your biggest problem is not inviting St.Louis to be on the team goes to show how great Canada is at hockey.

Maybe ironically, Mario Tremblay won more Stanley Cups for the Habs than Patrick Roy. So he had accomplished something for them, just not as a coach. As a player he was known as a hot head, as, of course, was Roy, so two French hot heads was just too much drama for one dressing room.
