#40 Change the oil on a PRM150 narrowboat gearbox

Great video and a good tip for reading the dipstick level - wish I'd thought of that. I got so frustrated trying to see mine I made a separate one out of a white cable tie pushed through a plastic block, I then copied the empty and full marks onto it from the real dipstick using a sharpie marker pen. I keep it hung up in the engine bay. I too have the same problem with the oil container not being quite big enough. I have a large oil syringe and usually have it strategically placed and ready to suck a little out of the container as it drains. If I'm lucky I can get enough out before it overflows but inevitably it still seems to go everywhere lol!

I bought a 12v suction pump from Amazon. It takes MOST of the oil out but it's always worth taking the drain plug out as well, to make sure every drop of oil is drained out. Plus it makes less mess in the engine bilge. Take special care of the dipstick as they are about £50 each!!. PRM say run the engine out of gear for 15 minutes prior to draining the oil out. I like your method of checking the oil level...very handy tip!!

Perfect timing to put the video up as I'm about to change my gearbox oil and could find no video anywhere elsewhere about how to do it. I even rang PRM to ask whether they did a video, but no they don't ?!. So many thanks !

You don’t need to wind the dip stick in,just put it in and if it reads half full without screwing in it actually full 🤔😉👍
