I've thought up a fan-fiction backstory for this - maybe Dr Dread is actually Dr Van Helsing (or his descendant) who invented a device to stop Dracula forever by making him capable of feeling remorse for his past atrocities. But it didn't work as planned and it turned Dracula good at the cost of making Van Helsing evil - so he took the name Dr Dread and reinvented himself as a criminal mastermind. Meanwhile, Dracula was inspired by his newfound morality to recruit the boys and train them to use their monster powers for good.

You're a better storyteller than Hanna-Barbera.
@agenttheater55 жыл бұрын
That could work. I think someone wrote a fan fiction once about Big D realising that if they kept on doing evil they'd only invite others to harm them and they'd basically be destroying themselves, so he figured that as it was too late for his generation to change their image, they'd invest in the younger generation so they wouldn't destroy themselves. I forget where I read it, but yours sounds really good too.

The villain is voiced by Hans Conried aka Captain Hook. This was one of his last roles. This show was one of the few done by Hanna Barbera's Australian studio rather than the American one. One last bit of trivia is that its one of the few shows that has been released on DVD that was not from Warner Bros.
@janebyrne64636 жыл бұрын
I kind of remember the show as a kid. I most remember Hans Conried as Dr. Dread (he sounded a lot like Captain Hook, who he also voiced). The best part of the show was the villains (duh) they were fun to watch. This was an example of Hanna Barbera's 70's output, very campy and cheaply animated. I can see why this show never found it's way on DVD. There were some cute moments here and there, but today I would prefer Hotel Transylvania.

Have you ever heard of a 70s TV show called Monster Squad (nothing to do with the 1987 movie)? It was basically the same idea, except they were animated wax statues and were aided by a janitor whose inventions accidentally brought them to life.
@janebyrne64636 жыл бұрын
I remember Monster Squad. It was live action though, not animated. The janitor was played by future Love Boat actor (and congressman) Fred Grandy.

Sympathy? Thanks? Understanding? No, they are half-human and can live on that muck humans call food, they have no insight to the daily struggles of a modern vampire! Ay, kids today, kids today!"

The idea of this show could work and if they brought it back with better writing and story plot it could be a hit. Columbia Pictures ( If you still own Hanna barbera) make it happen. So, much potential wasted. I wonder how much it would cost to buy this show? Ps. I always thought drac’s resting face was one of the best parts of an episode.
