Rob; excellent sleuthing to expose the limitations and work arounds of the OM1 camera. I own Olympus cameras, and this is not intended as a shot against the OM1. I would love to own one someday. I hope you can send your video along to OM Solutions as these limitations and work arounds are well beyond the average buyer. I owned a Panasonic G9 (a really old camera compared to the OM1) that had a very simple method to save all video settings to the Custom Buttons and at the same time save all photo settings to the same Custom Buttons. So, as I believe you know, you could go from Photo Mode to Video mode easily and have all your best settings without a brain numbing thought. Possibly this is something that could be fixed in a Firmware Update, but I think it would require a complete re-programing of the camera. Thanks again for taking the time to identify these limitations.

Panasonic has always done a good job separating video and photo modes, while allowing users to switch easily between the two without confusing the settings. It's going to require quite a bit of effort by OM Systems to revamp the custom mode to save video settings properly. I hope they do it. I'm sure it will pay off for them.

Hi, Rob. Thanks for a valiant effort to explain how to save video settings on the OM-1, but the steps currently required to do so are beyond confusing--not your fault, of course, just a problem with the way OMDS has launched the camera. I am a long-time Canon user who has recently switched to Olympus/OM System products, and so far I love the OM-1, which I have paired with the Olympus 100-400mm lens for bird photography. But the OM-1's inability to offer a user-friendly way to save video settings is a problem that OMDS really needs to address. Thanks for your excellent videos on use of the OM-1.

Thanks. Yes, OM Systems needs to have a way to save true video modes to a custom setting. Saving in video modes together with photo modes is confusing.

Ok as someone who is just starting to do movies I am totally confused now! I guess for experienced videographers this made total sense! Thank you for the information I will revisit this later when I have more video experience. Was hoping for a more basic video tutorial! Hopefully my em1 mkii will be a bit easier to setup! Thanks again Rob I do appreciate all your videos! Perhaps OM systems might want to do a video update to make this easier!

Yeah, this video was not meant to show you how to take better video. You may want to start here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/j5i8e6Fsjq-Ar8k It's not specifically for the EM1ii, but you should be able to extrapolate the settings you need.

To memorize video settings try the following: Configure the function lever to switch between stills and movie. With the mode dial in M, flip the function lever to movie. Make all the settings that you want memorized. Flip the function lever back to stills. Now assign the settings to a custom mode. When you want those movie settings, set the mode dial to M, and recall the custom mode then flip the function lever to movie.

Thanks for this video. I usually have the red button disabled to avoid making videos of the path as I walk along, but if I save this to a custom mode, with the settings as you explained, it will make making occasional videos much more straightforward.

I was thinking about that while making the video. I decided that for beginners, it might be confusing when the red record button doesn't actually record. Thanks.

I'm not a video guy, so I have my Video Button programmed to toggle the DTC (Digital Teleconverter) on and off -- when shooting macro for example, I can go from as effective (35mm) 2:1 to 4:1 with the press of a button -- and get razor sharp results with no exposure speed loss.

Thanks for your efforts Rob, but OMS needs to address this confusing mess. I have owned the OM-1 for about a week, and I'm seriously thinking about returning it. It is one thing to put 4K 10 bit on paper, another thing is to make a camera that's actually usable as a true hybrid. Been a long time Oly E-M1 user, and love them for photography - but I'm keeping the GH5 bodies for film work. I was hoping they had fixed movie mode to an acceptable level now, I would love to shoot with the superior IBIS of the OM-1. Thanks again for your video.

Good God. I thought i was quite technical but this blew me out of the water 😂. Great effort though. I bought this camera mainly for stills with occasional video ill probably be okay because i couldn't bear this rigmorole. How difficult would it have been (not have been) to put a simple toggle from still to movie for all C numbers to be accessible to both formats? Surely a firmware update can cure that.

Hey Rob, Jose from Puerto Rico. Great video as always, but to be honest, I don't do videos. Nevertheless, just to keep you updated I sent the OM-1 back to the seller at eBay, as you already know or I think I had told you so. The camera just shut down on me and would not turn on again. I got my refund and played it safe this time by ordering it at Adorama and with it, a two-year insurance plan. Now I have to wait patiently to see when I will get it delivered. I'll probably sell my OMD EM1 Mii down the road as soon as the other one gets in my hands. Let's see if hopefully, all goes well this time.

Ho Rob. Thanks for the details explanation. It helps me lot with OM1. I have problems assigning the Shutter button as the Record button. In Movie mode ( On the mode dial) I can set the Shutter button as Record button. But when in C1,2,3,4 , the Shutter button don't work as Record. I need to use the Red button. How to do it?
@RobTrek

You can't assign the record button to the shutter button and save it to C1-C4 since they only save Photo Modes. You need to be in Movie mode on the mode dial.

A very complicated subject very well explained. A little difficult for me to follow closely as I don't have my om-1 yet. After you have changed all of those video settings, if you were to go to the actual video mode on the dial, would it take these changes into account or would it remember the settings you had the last time you were in video mode?
@RobTrek

Thanks. That's a great question. It remembers the settings you made while in a PhotoMode like PASM, but not if you change from C1 to Movie mode.

Thanks for this video for clarification. Do you have any idea why one is not allowed to use manual mode, Aperture mode in video? so only P mode. I do not understand the reason for this limitation. I use a EM 1 II and have hoped for better video in the OM 1, allowing 4K 60p but with Aperture and manual mode having proper control over exposure. Your workarounds might help a bit but the OM video settings are more confusing than anything else I have seen in camera settings… I have seen a video from camera conspiracy about the video settings and its limitations about Custom modes and thought he might be joking about it of that he did something wrong. But it seems as if OM just did not think about video enough, very confusing
@RobTrek
@RobTrek 2 жыл бұрын
The video is really good on the OM-1 when in video mode on the mode dial. You can use PASM and all the other features relatively easy. It's just when you try to use video when in a photo mode that it gets rough.

In practice id probably use it to switch from normal video to slow motion in the field. As for exposure most would setup a shot with what thay want and shoot all day in that using the compensation dial as they go. And P mode does a pretty good job anyway.. for me anyway 👍🍌

Great video. Seems like OMDS should revamp this terribly confusing way of saving things. It is such a bad menu system for video, it almost seems deliberately being done, to hide the fact it's COULD BE a great video camera, if they didn't make it so hard to use. It seems Olympus cameras have always made video deliberately irritating to use, as to make it so most folks just say skip it. This is actually one of the main reasons Olympus had to sell the camera department, IMHO.
@RobTrek

@@RobTrek I think OMDS might just need to listen to the customer base a bit. The camera is capable of being easier to use, but the customers cannot issue a firmware update. It's almost appears deliberately done, to just not let the brand shine as a great video camera. If this is not actually the case OMDS will surely release a firmware update addressing it. I find it kind of interesting that with Olympus has always had the best stabilizer, if other brands caught up, Olympus had already improved, which kept them on top in this department. They also had PDAF, and Panasonic always stuck with DfD which has alwaye been complained about by customers. I think Olympus has always had a customer base wanting a little easier to use video usability. Panasonic having a near endless and easy to use set of video features, but lacking stabilization and terrible video AF. At the exact same time Olympus was physically ready to be the perfect handheld video camera, it had very handicapped video menus, holding the camera back. Seems almost like a prank on those of us who use M43.
