The sculptures are from the story of the creation of the 5 nations confederacy (Haudennosaunee) also known as the Iroquois confederacy.The man with the snakes in his hair is Atatarho, an Onondaga leader who was said to be a cannibal with a poisoned mind, the man helping him comb the evil out his mind is the great peacemaker or Tekanawí:ta. He was said to have reunited the five nations Oneida, Onondaga Cayuga Seneca and Mohawk during times of Great War and violence. I am kanien’kehaka (Mohawk) of Kahnawake so we are taught this story since birth, very cool to see this depiction in a museum. ✌️

Hi Carpetbagger, been enjoying your adventures. Saw the exhibit on Hiawatha, or IanwatHa, (He, the Comber), was a follower of Degandawida, who had the idea of the independent and warring tribes, banding together to form the Iroquois confederation. He heard of an evil cannibal, Odoadaho, whose hair was full of snakes(evil thoughts). Hiawatha talked to him and in talking with him, combed out out the snakes. Sort of a frontier psychoanalyst. Odoadaho also became a follower of degandawida and even served as a member of the Iroquois Council.

I liked basically, every exhibit in there. The guy, with snakes in his hair...was creative and unique I would say, from a mental standpoint. Like getting a blessing to remove the demons from your being. Honestly, Its like that kind of concept into an art form. Loved the kitty cats!

Hiawatha means"he who combs" When Tadodaho accepted this plan of peace, the Peacemaker is said to have 'combed the snakes' from Tadodaho's hair. so i can only guess some one put the statues together im no expert though ............ hope this helps in some strange way

I can’t believe the museum hasn’t changed since we took field trips there back in the 70’s. To get the full Western New York experience you have to come tailgate with Bills Mafia before a game this fall. Char-lot, Chy-lye, Ah-von are just a few of our weird pronunciations😁 Having grown up in Rochester, and traveling all over world, I can assure you WNY women are the best!
