It is written in his book "I was there when it happened" by Johnny Cash's base player Marshel Grant that Luther took 2 weeks to learn that break as he learned it note by note, only took a week to get the second one's lead for "CRY< CRY

You are correct about the band being tuned sharp. I have never seen Luther Monroe use a capo. Those early Sun Records were all over the page. The 1955 version of Folsom Prison Blues is tuned 3/4 of a step sharp. It's in the key of "somewhere between F and F# sharp". lol
@RockandrollNegro Жыл бұрын
Why do you call him Luther Monroe? He never even knew his middle name until adulthood. He always went by Luther Perkins. And no, Luther Perkins hated capos because they got in the way of his fretting hand, so he tuned up while Johnny used a capo.

A little slap back delay is essential to really nail the sound. Took me years to figure that out
@clintmiller24083 жыл бұрын
Don't forget reverb.
@JohnnyRebKy3 жыл бұрын
@@clintmiller2408 yes definitely. But most people already know that. But something was always missing when using reverb alone. A delay pedal is what put icing on the cake. Just a slight delay slap back

Hi, randy can you make a video on how to play the Cramps version of shortin' bread thank you for Greg Stoner
@ducktailcat7 жыл бұрын
Hi Greg, I'm sorry, The Cramps are not really my cup of tea. I'm focusing on the original 1950s sound, cause that's what I love listening too. Thank you for commenting though!

Nice you actually cover how Luther Perkins played this, so many guys are trying to teach this more like Bob Wootton...Simple was Luther's playing...Bob Wootton added more notes even in the simple backing parts...as has been said Luther was the inventor, Bob Wootten the master of this style back up.
@bryantaskins44483 жыл бұрын
I prefer Perkins personally.
@n.rcashofficial Жыл бұрын
@@bryantaskins4448I like Bob Wootton better. I learnt Bob's style before Luther's style.

A little bit of echo? Reverb?
@ducktailcat3 жыл бұрын
Sam Phillips didn't use reverb back then and guitar amps started only a few years later to include spring reverb.
