Fun fact: The scene where Harland finds out he is going into space and screams was unscripted. Well, kinda. The original script just had the character pass out, but Harland said "No. I have an idea. Move the mic back a bit and give me ONE take. If you don't like it, we won't use it." And proceeded to do that famous ear-piercing screech. You can actually see the actors trying not to laugh in that scene.

90s Disney was so interesting. You had those massive animation films, yet the live action department (including Touchstone) was still somewhere between the studio filmed goofy wholesomeness of the Dean Jones, Don Knotts, etc. movies, and the less hokey in the 2000s (Shaggy Dog 2006, Old Dogs) and then just kinda diverges into either the Disney Channel/AbC/Disney + originals or the big budget movies that are most of their current cinema output since Pirates of The Caribbean.

I think I have a soft spot for this movie largely because the main character is actually played earnestly. If he had been played with any cynical edge, or if he ever had really recognized that the people around him barely tolerate him, the fun would be over and the movie would deflate. He's goofy and socially inept, but he's still a decent guy at his core and never intends on harming/sabotaging the mission or any of his acquaintances, so he somehow rebounds into likability in my book. EDIT: Also, I will laugh at the "John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt" bit and his Miss America screams for the rest of my life.

I haven’t seen it since it came out, so I didn’t remember everybody hating that guy over Apollo 13. That’s either the writers being lazy (or not expecting the audience to remember a highly accurate portrayal of the event starring Tom Hanks from just a couple years earlier) or they’re saying NASA is a bunch of pricks. It was an equipment failure (the manufacturer was to blame), and it happened after NASA had already been to the moon twice. There was nothing that anyone at NASA could have done to prevent it. If anything, the ground crew for that mission should be commended for figuring out how to get all three astronauts home safely without the command module (the module Apollo astronauts would normally come back in), using the limited resources the astronauts had on hand.
