The best way this movie brings Alien back to its roots is how it's about a company fucking over its employees without remorse. All these sequels focus so much on lore and gods and ultra science but like, it's so boring. This I really liked that their motivations are so simple and understandable.

I think this was hands down the best Alien movie after Aliens easily even just based on art direction and special effects. Actually making an attempt to continue that retro future is such a breath of fresh air for these movies. In my opinion, the biggest problem was the length of the set up. I get that it's horror and they want to build suspense, but the beginning is way too long before we get to the core meat of the film. But honestly? It was worth it. The way that it's shot and the environment its in feels really good, like the turning off the gravity thing really makes you feel like you're on an old space station. Also, the practical effects they use are great and better than any Ive seen this year, idk it's just cool as a fan of the og two seeing one of these movies bring it back to the horror focus and put real effort into sets and effects.

I did not like this film. It brings in the awful black oil plot. Prometheus and Covenant ruined the mystery of the Xenomorph. Being able to remove a facehugger once it has attached itself to a person was dumb. Bad callbacks. The terrible cgi Ian Holm. Parts of The Nostromo still being intact. The original still beig alive. The main characters being able to leave the planet despite being confined to it and being able to gain easy access to a ship. Weyland or anybody else not investigating the Romulus. I mean it's right above a planet controlled by them. Being told that Weyland now wanting the Xenomorph to make hunans superior even though we were told it was for their bio Weapons division Which makes more sense. Rook somehow knowing everything that happned with the Nostromo and the crew including how Ripley got rid of the Xenomorph in so much detail. Yet Yet in Aliens everything that happened in the first film was a mystery. Which made sense. The awful hybrid at the end.

It’s an unfortunate balancing act because Ian Holm’s widow not only signed off but wholeheartedly endorsed it because she felt like Hollywood shafted him in the last years of his life. Personally I thought the effect would’ve looked better if he didn’t have all of his face or it was covered in the android goo or something. But because they kept his whole face visible and in good light it worked less. Also when he’s on the video screen, it oddly looked worse to me a lot of the time.

Fun fact: One of the producers of the film was Scott Free Productions, a property of Ridley Scott. The space station is divided into two, one of them called "Romulus" and the other "Remus", as the legendary founders of Rome. Pretty needlessly, as we never see the "Remus" part of the station. So, why the "Remus" reference? Maybe because in the roman myth, Romulus and Remus were raised by a wolf (we even see an illustration of the myth on board), and that is (almost) the title of the last Ridley Scott show for TV: "Raised by Wolves", which can be interpreted as a tribute to the original and main director of the Alien saga.

But anyway I did enjoy the movie though there were some plot holes and while these characters were not the dumbest cast, that goes to Covenant, I will agree with Doug that they were not the best. Alien is like the Terminator. The first two movies are classics and different in tone yet the movies that came afterwards are a mixed bag, ranging from okay to terrible. In a way, Romulus is similar to Terminator Zero, another big project from a familiar sci-fi IP that came out around the same time. Both are a return the form and bring in new characters and scenarios although TZ is much more subtle in its callbacks than Romulus. Both aren't perfect but are strong attempts to bring each franchise back to its roots after years of sub-par entries. Speaking of Terminator, Fede Álvarez would make an excellent Terminator movie if given the chance.

Never thought I'd see the day where an Alien movie is part of the DisneyCember lineup, but I like it.

@4:52 without spoiling what Doug is talking about here, I can't say he's entirely right about his statement since we live in a world that already made the 4th film Alien: Resurrection 😏. I doubt he could've forgotten about Resurrection, considering he did a full on review of the movie as the Critic.

Easily one of my favorites of the year. The other day me and my siblings rewatched it, and we spent the first 10 minutes listing all the horrible things WeYu did, and funnily enough it’s some of the most despicable stuff in the movie and it’s not even past the first ten minutes 😂

Dam... i didn't know it was the same director from the Evil Dead Remake. I actually like that remake, and very few in between where a movie actually did a good job representing the previous franchise.

I thought it was the best one since Aliens, but then I loved Alien 3 and Prometheus and I liked Resurrection and Covenant.

I got what i was hoping for: that director does tension and practical effects well. On the other hand i also got a ton of call-backs and what felt like studio meddling.
