It takes a little bit to get used to driving one after driving a normal tractor style, but once you've got it, you've got it. If you're cutting lines, you have to be careful spinning the mower around or the back tire will dig a bare spot. Just take it nice and slow during the turn and then it's back to full throttle across the yard!

Those blades seem really great. The only reservation I have is, in muddy conditions or when you hit many ant hills those blades might allow the build up uf caked mud by yielding to it then making the cutting path narrower and narrower!?

I had something similar on a 60 y.o. 20" 2 stroke Toro push mower. One solid disc with 4 blades around the edge. I don't remember if they pivoted or not, but that mower was unstoppable in high grass, and cut grass as smooth as a golf course! Funny how technology repeats itself.😄

The greatest inventor in American history was Thomas Edison he was a thief every single thing he ever patented was stolen. He has a barn with researchers that would take thing he found interesting or patents he thought could sell and they. Would tweak them just enough to to pass a new pattern an then he would pass the invention off as his own. Technology doesn’t always repeat its self people just like to steal other people’s ideas without giving credit. I dunno if you like bees but there is this “new” design called a flow hive but it was actually patented like 60 years ago

Our Local Brand Mower here in OZ had these style blades since the '50's. Large disk with 2 or 4 swinging blades. Later the disks came out with a shape folded into them to make the discharge better. Seems funny to see the same design heralded as some sort of break through design when we had them all along and even funnier to hear all the negative comments about things I used for decades and did professional mowing and no one ever said about them. I can guarantee this from having used swing and bar blades extensively, the swing type are FAR less likley to damage your engine or spindles from hitting hidden obstacles than the bar ones. NEVER broken a crank with swing blade, broke 3 with bar blades before I gave up on any mower that had them.

I am a retired appliance service technician and we had a washer dryer in one that never performed well which has recently appeared as break through cutting edge with steam. Strait BS. In my 31 years turf maintenance experience, the flail type blades are inferior. They push back in heavy thick turf, changing the overall diameter of the swath. That overlap is important to a crisp cut.

My blades for my eXmark 52" Vantage arrived on Saturday ( 09April2022 ). My current blades by Rotary ( part# 11421 ) after 15 hours in Florida ( are always worn out ).Then, I installed the Meg-Mo blades at 318.1 hours on my mower; and started to mow my property 5 acres. Currently, I have mowed 2.6 hours with the Meg-Mo blades ( hour meter is 320.7 hrs ) and my lawn looks great and a much faster cutting time with these blades. OH YEA

I jumped on Roy's blades early on. I had them on a Ferris 1500 and John Deere X360 both 48" and ran them for about 4 years. Back then the units were reasonable and replacement blades were just a couple of bucks. When Roy started raising the costs, I just couldn't see that big difference in the Gator G5 blades on my grass. I can replace my G5 for about $10 a blade, but the Meg-mo's were costing about $35 per spindle (it takes 4 Meg-mo blades per spindle). I really liked the Meg-mo blades (they do run quieter), but it just wasn't economical for me to continue running them. But I really like my Gators and they can mulch!

Was there any explanation to the effect of the unit as a whole should be precisely balanced? Anything that spins fast and isn't balanced vibrates and prematurely wears down the lifespan of the machine it's attached to or causes a need for more frequent maintenance so it'll last longer.

@@uncrunch398 Good Point! I had the center plate that holds the "knives" checked for flatness and balance by my local machine shop. The knives were weighed to make sure all were the same weight. After installing, the meg-mo spun with less vibration than my stock blades. The meg-mo was actually quieter than my stock blades. I really liked the meg-mo system......it was the actual cost of replacement parts that forced me to switch. My G5 Gator blades are damn near as good, at a lot less cost of maintenance, besides, I can sharpen and balance the Gators.

I have owned a set of Meg-Mo's for years for my JD ZTR. I wanted to really like them, but that's just not how it turned out. I mow professionally as well and have for a very long time. I have a lot of experience with many blade types so have some basis to judge them against. MM-s are good for one thing and one thing only- destroying leaves while side discharging. The blades do not stay extended out like they should in thick grass and will fold back enough to allow for a ton of stringers. Contrary to what Roy claimed, they are not self balancing either. Like I said- in the leaves, they are wicked, but the blades folding back when the debris is heavy under the deck isn't a problem then. They might work a bit better in southern turf, but then, most blades work better down there than up in the north where the grass is limp. I've run doubles that were properly balanced and they are vastly superior to the MM's.

The blades folding back would be my concern on a standard rider lawnmower. Zero turn type mowers turn at much faster rpm which helps extend the blades out. I don’t run my tractor wide open since it cuts just fine at leisurely 1700 rpm. Why run anything harder than needed?

ran the meg mo blades on 48 inch diesel walkers for 20 years, several benefits the quality of the cut went up, the 4 cutting edges made finer clippings which let us go further before emptying the catcher, we were also able to speed the mowers up by 25 percent and still achieve reasonable cut quality, gearbox damage ceased to be an issue, downside was with the bigger catchers, the weight of the clippings became higher, and more difficult to lift, not a tragedy, but just something of note.

The blades shoukd be cheaper fir these. Appears to be standard disk hay mower turttle shell style. If you have a machine shop with a CNC or Lazer cutter, shoumd be cheao to get them made.

I made a set for my belly mower a while back. Was wanting more lift to push clippings and it did work well but holy cow, they put more stress on the deck belt and ate up a lot more gas. I used hi-lift tips. These probably cut great if it's not to high or dense. Thanks for the video.

He cut yards for a living and used a scag Anyway he put 2 blades on each spindle and cut a yard that was all leaved over a6he chopped that stuff up so fine it looked like little brown specks everywhere But the best one I like so far is the guy who made 10 or 12 push mowers joined together lol

Nice product, but 270 bucks for my commercial Toro. I've mowed in the same conditions, waist high, a little overgrown, regular, wet, dry, best blades I've ever used are Oregon Gator G6 blades. Got everything in one pass, except for the waist high stuff that needed two passes (should have used my tractor and bush hog). I side discharge and they perform great and the clippings are 1 inch in length or shorter. A set cost me 49 bucks and last forever. They seem to produce better lift than my high lift blades.

I have owned meg mo systems for years they have their purpose but blades dull to quickly and have 4 to replace rather then two..each one has a special stretch bolt with a shoulder so it can swing... All I'm saying is you can get the same performance out of a cheap blade all you have to look for is a high lift blade that is the only difference in that right there that's making you think that it most so much better and mulching so good it does pulverize the grass but it also tears the grass when the blades get dull

Also having a mulching kit on it instead of a full sized discharge chute would have played at least a 60% part in such a poor quality cut. Would have been considerably different had the mower been able to clear the mowed grass instead of bogging down losing blade rotation speed due to too much crap under the deck

That's what is was thinking ... You went fast with first ones then slow with the 2nd ones... I have a 30yo scag 48" fist year of hydro and if i keep blades sharp cuts like a dream ... But let's be honest... I mowed professional from high school in 1987 till just after college in 1997 and I never had a mower I was happy with... My last new mower was a spartan... It's was a beast but I sold it cuz it didn't empress me... Had Walker and a new wright...my old scag is still mowing today... My wright blew up after 50hrs so I made them replace it was a new walker... But the walker had to many electrical problems...

Back in the early 80s I worked for a guy that had a MTD tractor style mower and he got a set of blades like that I went out and was mowing 4 foot tall kosher weeds and it was just chewing them up. Definitely a good idea

Those appear to be designed for full side discharge. The mulching is a beneficial side effect. I really like the concept. I will definitely be looking to buy some. I have weeds that grow really fast and trees that keep trying to sprout where I don't want them. lol

suggestion - hang a chain hoist in your garage to lift mower decks to change blades, you will be on a solid floor and not in danger of a tractor bucket dropping on you, you will not need the tractor at all and you will find other uses for the chain hoist. I can stand my zero turn mower almost vertical with the hoist, no bending down to line up bolts or blades, no reaching under the deck and makes cleaning the underside of the deck easier. . I have a second chain hoist under the shed where I park my 3 ph post hole digger and use that hoist to install and remove the digger, it takes most of the work out of installation and removal. I can raise and lower the digger with one hand while using the other hand to line up the digger boom and bell to attach to the tractor. the hoists are amazing work savers

That’s a lot of mowing. Probably similar to what I do because I also do a baseball field and a couple of commercial properties I think they are the most fun to ride mower I’ve ever seen. For me it’s more comfortable standing up than sitting down. You can also shift your weight which allows you to ride a hill really well I primarily wanted them for how well they hold a hill and to ease my back pain As far as negatives they probably have a little bit less power and don’t go quite as fast as the mowers you are using now

A family member installed 3 of these on a BadBoy zero turn with a 60" deck. Less than 100 hours on these. Mowing an apple orchard. Easily damaged and thrown out of balance... even a small bend binds them against the steel circle. Produces an irregular cut at best. 3 OEM blades, properly sharpened, performs far better, IMHO.

The primary reason that I use a stand on mower is because it holds a hill dramatically better than a sit down. The other things I found out after having it is that it’s more comfortable and doesn’t make my back sore like a sit down mower. It’s also just more fun to drive I used my stand on mower for about a month and went and got a second one that was narrower for certain applications Thank you for watching and for commenting

I had a set about 25-30 years ago. Keep in mind that they will mow about 1/4” lower than the factory blades if the factory blades are straight and do not have a step down in them. My biggest complaint was that they sucked the power out of an engine. The meg-mo blades that I had did not have the four big holes in them. They were pretty heavy and hard on an electric clutch. They dispersed the wet grass in the morning a little better than the factory ones.

I used them last season. They do a better job than traditional blades. The mulching ability saves me having to do two passes in some situations. I Did not like trying to sharpen them. And certain grasses would blow down rather than cut off in dryer times of the year. The amount of time to sharpen blades is the reason I tried Ballard's x-blades. They are kind of a compromise somewhere in between conventional and Meg mow. There was a company in Nappanee Indiana that made a blade similar to Meg mo, but the four blades were quick attach, no tools required. For the commercial guy like myself, that changes a lot of blades, that intrigues me.

thanks for the demo, For the difference I would prefer the regular blade and slow down a bit. The middle is not doing much. As you said the mower is not a bush hog. The circle blades not so much for me. Sharp blades always work better. Lots of contract mowers seem to ride faster and the cut shows it. thanks again.

They seemed to do a very nice job. I'm curious to know how they do long term. Since they can swivel and take less damage, I wonder if they are hardened higher to keep sharp longer, or are made out of a tougher, or more wear resistant steel. Seems like that could be an option. My only other thoughts are a bit on the Safety Sally side, so I apologize in advance, but it's just where my thinking wandered. Right now, those blades are held in a single shear configuration (won't bore everyone with the definition). I was thinking if they used a second disk with the blade in between the two (double shear), it would be both stronger, and safer. I was also thinking they could put in a LOT more lightening holes in the disks, like what you might see on a straight shaft brushcutter blade, and it might help with the power loss that some commenters seem to have experienced.

I purchased 3 of these blades for my Cub Cadet, at a farm show for $220 plus tax. I will install them this weekend. The blades are made from Swedish steel and can be harder than conventional blades. The safety police regulations require standard blades to be softer material so they will bend and not shatter when hitting an object. These swing if striking an object. I hope to switch them out this weekend!

It looks like they took the concept from a disc mower. Very common in hay farming. They don't use a double sheer and I've never seen a thrown blade. And they spin at the same RPM(3,000). They can take quite the abuse from dirt, rocks and small trees. You literally can mow as fast as the ground will let you(as long as you have the HP). The only difference I see in the actual blade on a disc mower is, the blade is reversible(at least on some brands.) When one edge wears, you flip it over. And they only use 2 blades per spindle.

This is a small bush hog blade with four instead of two. You could mow rocks with this setup and not throw a blade. Trust me on this one. I do about 100 hrs per year with my bush hog on some nasty growth with stumps, logs and rocks everywhere.

Brock, I prefer not to mulch with my 61" zero turn. Do the Meg-Mo blades chop the grass up really fine and blow them out, or does it tend to stay in the deck area?

These blades automatically mulch more than regular blades. Because of that the company recommends that you discharge the clippings Basically the guy told me that it’s not necessary to mulch with these blades and that if you do it can get too wet and build up under the deck I was mulching because my electronic mulch on demand was stuck in the closed position.

I had a set of them, there are pluses and minuses. The plus side they do throw the grass really well. They do fold back if you hit something. The minuses is they are expensive. They are almost impossible to keep balanced They are very noisy They do not cut tall grass, they fold back.

id weigh each blade on a gram scale. as long as the center disk doesn't get damaged that should be close. if you wanted to get really close a scale on each end of the blade would be more accurate. more noisy than high lift blades? i figure the center disk also makes it not cut tall grass as well? i always sharpen conventional blades to within 3 inches of center and it seems to help with tall grass and higher travel speeds.

Yes you could use those methods to get them more balance. I don’t really think it’s necessary personally but that’s an opinion. I’ve heard some people say it they do better on high grass and some people say they do worse. I’m not going to give my opinion until I fixed my mulch on demand shoot and ran them longer. i have a set of these and mine on a 2 blade 51" deck. HAVE NOT BEEN HAPPY WITH THEM, just like your's I have to mow the yard twice to get a clean cut. CAUSE? blades do not have enough lift on the back to get the grass to stand and be cut. The blades are basically a set of hay mowers, no mind altering rocket science here. Oh btw, if you're looking for service after the buy, dont bother. these people wont even answer an email. But on the positive side, they are tough and you can hit roots, concrete and they survive w/o damage, which is the main reason I purchased. Going to try and make my own blades that actually have lift to cure the cut.

It would have helpful to see a close up of the factory cutting edges of both blade types. I find brand new OEM style blades a bit dull or rounded and always sharpen them. If this new style comes sharp it has a not apples to apples advantage.

Sometimes I do sometimes I don’t. I thought for this kind of test it would be better to show them both factory edges in case my sharpening was not perfect. I may have to try a set on my Skag Turf Tiger. I can tell you I'd never be able to deal with that auto mulch crap on the machine. I'll take the manual lever on the Skag vs what the green thing does. @@larrywarolin7215 I'm not sure crap ensued. Toro purchasing them kept the Wheel Horse name alive much longer than it would have been possible if it stayed in the Pond's hands or AMC for that matter. Even in 2007, the last year for the classic 315-8, it was still a great tractor and everything on my 1973s still fits the 2007. I think the market changed and the plastic John Deeres and Cub Cadets that Lowes and Home Depot were selling for $1000 was the death knell for the $4000 garden tractor Wheel Horse made. People didn't care that the green things had plastic transmission gears and would only run 3 years and be dead while the Wheel Horse would still be going 20 years down the road. I have a 1950 suburban, 1971 Charger 12, a 1972 GT-14, a 1973 12, 14 and 18 automatic, 1976 C-160 8 speed, 1977 C-101, 1996 416 hydro and a 2005 GT 315-8. I'm looking for a 522xi or 523 Dxi still

@@1971hodge, The Wheel Horse died a few yrs after Toro took over. The originals were a true yard tractor and a lawn mower. I still have a 1969 hydro that works perfect. You obviously know way more than I ever will about them, but the old ones were basically two pieces of angle iron for a frame and rugged as hell !

I ordered blades to fit my Craftsman L100 38" mower deck. I specified they use a star drive. The blades came, but with round holes. They said they would work. I can not keep them tight. I will have to weld the cams into the holes to make them work. Was told because I ran them they as re not returnable. These are a good idea, but their brochure should say they don't sell a star drive, if they can't make it available.

TomG I have a model 729 Grasshopper which I love in every way, except for one thing. I have a set of regular Grasshopper mulching blades on it (61" deck) and the underside of the deck packs up with mulched clippings so bad it affects the way the blades spread the grass clippings. Do the meg-MO blades do any better or do they pack the deck also? Any suggestions from anyone are welcome!

I ran Grasshoppers for 15 years. I'm in Delaware so it is all tall fescue- so my thoughts may not help depending on your type of grass. I generally found the high lift to clump up and more grass to stick under deck and never found any spray on product to help much. I can also tell you if it is sandy where you mow, or your are cleaning up leaves, the high lifts definitely caused excessive wear on the under deck baffles and I would have to cut out and weld in new ones every other year. Again, a lot of places we mowed were commercial sites and roadsides in developments so you probably won't have that same issue. As for me, on Grasshoppers with 61" or Woods with 61" I always ran medium lift blades and made out better. Those decks have good air flow and lift in the design and I didn't see where the high lift did anything more than wear out faster. I saw someone else replied he loves the extra high lift and I'm not saying he is wrong at all- only that you have to find what is best for your conditions. Grasshopper was ahead of its time in the mid 1980s, and they still make a great product if you can swallow the price.

:-) yeah, I'm just ribbing you. The first time I saw an impact driver take a blade off revolutionized how I did it, I was trying with giant leverage bars, one holding the blade and one on the bolt with lots of swearing. On that Meg-mo blade though, spinning weight robs big power, that would have increasing impact on thicker grass. If the mower is powerful enough, at the very least it will consume more gas. All mowers should have those airless tire too!

How about a Meg-Mo super vac version.. the center hub filled in with aggressively shaped cutting blades for very high lift? Cross welded X-Blades gives 4 high lift ears for each, works great.Turns out I have one of those wierd "S" shaped hubs and the formed blades which can't be cross bladed. I'm willing to change spindles to the star or 5/8 hole. Would consider a Meg Mo super vacuum version.. I got a LOT of Leaves to suck up every fall.

These blades remind me of agricultural mower blades used in the likes of Lely and JF agricultural mowers and they are hungry for power they need at least 120 horsepower tractor to be any use. Reading the comments people have been saying these ones for your mower are power hungry to . It’s all to do with the way the power is transferred and full rpm is required to turn them so that’s why the clutches get hammered .

I promise if you go to any place that sells trailer parts and buy hitch safety chains that have the hooks on both ends and you can hook one end on your cutting edge of your bucket and other end on what you want to lift. Wether you want single hook, slip hook, or hook back to it self. Handyest chain you will own.

The manufacturer recommends that you discharge but my discharge chute was stuck I don’t think it’s gonna be a problem to sharpen. you take them off and put them in a vice And the weight of the center wheel makes balancing not a big problem
