That's a nice amount of pet wood, but I would say you should move a bit west. The cata formation yields some nice pet wood however you will find more palmwood, and agatized pet wood of all sorts if you go a bit more west. Might I suggest looking at Darwin Dillon's Flickr albums of his petwood collected in more Western parts of Texas. It gets very beautiful when a little microcrystalline, and cryptocrystalline are available rather than all coarse grained, and plain. If you need some help in finding the areas Darwin visits I know where most of them are, and he doesn't keep his locations a secret. You will also find agate along with the pet wood in many cases if you go a bit more west. Also I know a whole lot of places in far west Texas to find the rarer west Texas varieties. Also know some of the best places for Rio grande agate, but the far west Texas agate locations I'll only share with serious rock hounds who would want to partner up. They also need to know a bit about geology, and agate formation. But I will share a few places for west Texas agate that are on the side of roads like road cuts, and such. For any who aren't all that serious about it, but just want easy public pickings. Anyway just thought I'd share that while that material is nice it's common, and there's a lot of it that doesn't vary all that much in appearance. But if you head west you'll find the volcanics gave the pet wood in Western Texas some extraordinarily beautiful color, and agatized pocket rot wood, or palmwood is worth a considerable amount more than common pet wood. And it's not all that hard to find if you know where to look it's just most Texas prospecters don't go out west because it's more rugged, and remote. But I'm telling you the reward is worth it!

nathan gandara yeah best info I can share is how I find my locations. I'm sure you have Google Earth what most people don't know is you can get the geologic overlay for Texas or for any state. They're free on usgs, but yeah if you don't already have it the tool is very valuable to have. It can be hard to learn to navigate it at first however once you figure it out it's awesome. If you know geologic names, and have an idea of what your looking for it shouldn't take long to figure out. You can turn on the whole geologic layer for Texas or just single out one formation or lava flow. It will show you everywhere the cata formation is exposed on the surface. And single out all the layers show you where the right alluvium is to search. Let's say your finding material in a river from the cata with the overlay you can find exactly where the river cuts through it. Anyway if you want I'll dig up the usgs link it has all the states available on there for download they are in .kml and .kmz happy hounding brother

You need a heavy duty dolly to haul those huge pieces! Maybe even a come along to pull them free. Some very nice petrified wood, by the way. ☺️ I just love the sound they make when they " clink " together. How about making a wind chime made of a few of these? It would sound so pretty.

I've made mind chimes in the past they are great this video was made a long time ago. Ive actually already cut and polished some of these logs. I post more on Facebook I have a better following there. I posted one of the slabs March 17th from the big log that was high up in the embankment buried.

I grind spheres here in Colorado and I'm trying to source a chunk of llanite that will cut a 4" sphere. I know it isn't rare where it's found but it is a long way from anywhere. Can you help me? How should I contact you?

@nathangandara. I hear ya, we have some secret petrified wood places we go to and would love to share the info but them there will be hoards of rockhounds picking the place clean. Mixed feelings on that, guess you have to get out there and find spots, make sure it's legal to take from. We're in central TX btw :)
