Rockler VS Woodpecker Table Saw Gauge.

Rockler just released their version of a table saw alignment gauge. I compare it to the Woodpecker Saw Gauge that I previously bought. Important note: I thought I had recorded some broll footage of me using only the rockler product, but when I went to edit (after I tore all the gear down), I couldn't find any. Nevertheless, both the Woodpecker Saw Gauge and Rockler Gauge measured identical readings. They both performed well. The main difference is the quality of constructions, miter slot alignment type, and case. Either one works well.

I made my own with an old machinist dial indicator I inherited. My runners have zero slop in them which is just a matter of time and effort of learning to dial them in exactly right. The other way is to not make the runner but instead buy one of the newer ones made, dial it in with the adjustment screws and you're all set. Even with the indicator you're still way under the cost of the Rockler even with a perfectly accurate tool.

Very unbiased review. Thank you for that. I'm going red. The simplicity of Woodpeckers tool improves repeatability and reliability, in my opinion. They now offer a newer model that comes with an extension to check the fen ce alignment from the location. More money doesn't always mean better quality, but in this case, I think it is, and worth the wait.

When I got my table saw (an R4512) 3 years ago, I made my own alignment jig. I bought a dial indicator that came with a heavy magnet base and attached the dial indicator to my homemade jig. It worked ok, but yeah, even the slightest of slop in the miter slot made it more difficult to use than it needed to be. I bought the Woodpeckers' alignment gauge back in April. Since I already had the dial indicator, I only paid $80. It is so much nicer to use with those miter slot pins. I knew my saw needed adjusting so it was no surprise that it was in the "20 thou" neighborhood. I managed to get it down to .001 with the new saw gauge. I don't recall if the Rockler unit was available at the time I was looking to purchase a saw gauge. Having bought several small measuring tools from Woodpeckers and already having the dial indicator, if the Rockler unit was available at the time, I think I still would have gone red. The price was close enough and the miter slot pins were just too good to pass up. Don't get me wrong, I'm a Rockler fan, too. I bought the Dust Right 750 a year ago last spring and I love it. Their collapsible hose is the bomb (just remember to get their keyed hose clamps. Others may be backwards and won't work. Ask me how I know). I have their fence clamps and a couple of doweling jigs. They are things that I use and I'm glad I have them. I also like my Woodpeckers, too. It's ok to like both. Besides, blue and red go together, right?

So i Purchased the Woodpecker's Saw Gauge. $ 99.00 dollars plus shipping. I not only learned a lot, but I'm extremely happy I got this measuring device. Additionally my friends table saw is an older unit. Even though it has a Riving Knife the Fence itself was off a-lot. It cost my friend a lunch to use my newly purchased saw gauge,LOL. Use a combination square on the same tooth and your good to go but if you feel the need to go crazy set your combo square a hair short of the tooth and plug the gap with a feeler gauge of the right thickness. Just be sure to measure to the same tooth by rotating the blade before checking again. There I just saved you $$$'s

Kudos on another excellent review. Well-balanced and, to my eyes & ears, sincere. I have similar experience with Red & Blue as @Awl That Wood Crafts and others. One thing I might mention is a possible error that many of us make in evaluating prices. It involves putting a difference into percentage terms. Twice one price varies in actual DOLLARS from the second price as the $ of the first price goes up or down. Twice a nickel is still only 10 cents. Twice $60 ($120) is definitely getting into more thinking about the expenditure. If you struggle with balancing frugality against perceived (and actual) precision, longevity, convenience, etc., it is complicated. Reviews like this help present as many relevant points as possible to finally hit the sweet spot. Thanks, again!

YES! Was about to say the same thing. Checked my table saw AND my drill press (for table true-ness and runout) with the A-Line-It. Also checks the trueness of your table saw ARBOR, which the Woodpecker and Rockler don’t do. Hey Wittworks, #suggestion do a vid on the A-Line-It tool and ALL the functions that it can do, not just the miter slot to blade adjustment. Also, one might consider investing in a “Master Plate” and use that for checking your table saw instead of a saw blade. Cheers.

Great stuff! I love Rockler. Their innovations are usually very good quality. Maybe not the flash of Woodpeckers, but Rockler engineers their products for use and cost. I have the Woodpeckers gauge. Yah, I love that self-centering bit. That is, as you said, genius. Rockler did what seems to be a very good job at designing a product to complete the task, correctly, with little fuss, for a decent price. If I were to purchase this tool today, I think I’d probably go for the Rockler over the Woodpeckers. It’s always good to have the choice!

It seems the only adjustment option is the vertical adjustment to level the bar. I'd like it better if it fitted in my miter slots better (like every other tool I use with the miter slots).

I was trying to square up my bandsaw a few days ago with the empire 6" combo square and according that the blade and table were square. Long story short it wasn't so I set that square and a woodpeckers 6 inch on the bandsaw table and the empire square was out of wack. I am a machinest by trade, extremely fair comparison, for me I like the price of rockler but I do not have great faith in plastic. The self centering on the woodpecker is worth it to me. I will spend 3 hours setting up measuring, re measuring, calculating, and measuring again, then 10 minutes cutting. To ensure ease of table saw setup, bringing it back to 0 after beveled cuts its worth it to me.

Informative review of the two gauges covering the differences. I'd go red, just because of the quality difference. Also, if you ever want to sell it, you'd get practically nothing for the Rockler one, and pretty much what you paid for the Woodpeckers one. However, I made my own from a few pieces of scrap wood and a $13 indicator off Amazon. It is easily as accurate as either of them, or anything else on the market. Yes, don't want to be 'that guy', but it's the truth. Have to say that if you don't have the knowhow to make one, or don't want to take the time to do it, buying either of these (or any other one) is something well worth the money since adjusting the miter slot - and the rip fence - is crucial to getting the most out of your table saw. Just a general statement about Woodpeckers. Their products are always very very well manufactured, and darn pretty to look at. Part of the problem with them, however, is that a not insignificant portion of their tool line is vastly overpriced, and some of their tools are a solution looking for a problem. Gotta give them credit though, they make quality stuff.
@wittworks
@wittworks Жыл бұрын
Thank you! I made a cheap one at first and didn’t have the skills to have the right miter slot tolerance. That’s when I broke down to buy the red. I still love it. The self centering is genius.
@DonsWoodies
@DonsWoodies Жыл бұрын
@@wittworks Agree about the self centering. The first time I saw a review (someone else's) of it, I disparaged it because from the pictures it looked like the roller doing the centering hit on the chamfers of the miter slot, and I knew that could not be accurate. Someone responded that the roller really sat in the slot, and not on the chamfers. Like you say, a genius move on Woodpeckers part.
@wittworks

It was the main reason why I bought it. Especially after I failed at getting a good miter slot fit. I’m telling myself (and my wife) that it was cheaper to buy it than spend my time making one with skills I don’t have. 🤫

[Comments help the channel…I get it…] Bought the “A-Line-It” kit years ago. But this comment isn’t really brand-specific. Alignment tools are mostly used for table saws, and most table saws (that are worth buying) will only need alignment once, maybe twice a year. In between, the gauge will sit on a shelf and you will most likely forget where it is and how to use it. I wouldn’t spend too much for a tool as long as it does what it should. Woodpecker is great, but to pull it out once a year and look at it….Just get what will work that one time each year, and then put it where you will find it 12 months later. I think I bought my gauge 20 years ago and somehow haven’t lost it yet. Great item to have, but be practical. Thanks…and here’s your comment! :-)

I know this video is a year old. That being said, country-of-origin may also factor into someone's decision-making; I know that it does for me. I can't find anything on the Rockler where the base or dial-gauge are manufactured. Woodpeckers' gauge is imported, per their website, the other parts are made in the USA. Also, per Woodpeckers website, as of 2024-04-29, they are sold-out of the Saw Gauge, and are accepting reservations with an expected ship date of 2024-06-10.

I was hoping to hear performance between the two in your video but it was just about features. Did you have any differences in the readings you got from the gauges between the two or did both accurately read the same? Thanks.

I would buy the woodpecker. The selfcentering and a "hard" case is worth the price difference to me. I won't say I drop tools but if I did knowing it has a case rather then the cardboard box it came in is a plus, or if it gets a drink or anything wet it won't matter to the plastic woodpecker case.

I know you did this video a year ago, but I just wanted to point out that saying the Woodpeckers version is twice the price of the Rockler one is a little harsh IMO. In the last year, and even today, you can get the Woodpeckers Saw Gauge for $69.99 😁

I think you have ask yourself how much do you need to use it. I have a Bosch 4100 series that I’ve dragged to job sites for the last 7 years that has maybe moved .001 with the abuse it’s taken. I used a digital caliper and the mag-dro. I’ve been thinking about upgrading but that saw has spoiled me.

So my question is this, how do they compare in the accuracy department?
@wittworks
@wittworks 2 жыл бұрын
they both read the same readings, so I would say they're equally accurate. The woodpecker is aluminum, so it may last longer, etc...its nicer to use, but the $40 upgrade would be a personal preference issue in my opinion.

If you have a 6” digital vernier caliper already purchase a Mag-Dro Miter Slot Base from Rockler or Woodcraft for $9.99 and have similar results as any of these expensive jigs you will rarely need.

You're really going to do well. I predicted that Lincoln St Woodworks would blow up too. Very informative, dry humor. And I've been meaning to pick up one up because I got tired of making the homebrew setup every time I want to check. If you're going to spend $3-$5K for a precision tool, it's OK to spend 3.5% to make sure it's perfectly dialed in. Or so it seems to me. Gotta go with team Red and the (buy once, cry once) rule. Also, I got the Woodpeck one because of the self centering miter sled. That's actually pretty damn ingenious.

The question is... how often are you going to be checking and adjusting your table saw. If it's once in a blue moon then go with Rockler. If your like me you go with the pretty self centering expensive model.

The problem with Woodpecker and Festool, for that matter, is that no one will state how bad they are or express the clever design or added benefits of using their products; they simply trash the colour or cost and not the R&D and QR

I agree with the miter slot pain. The Rockler doesn't fit very well on my table; it only has vertical adjustments for the guide. The Woodpecker self-center looks like the big selling point and a great feature. I'm on the fence (pun) about ditching the Rockler to get the Woodpecker. It is an investment, and they wouldn't take my first child in exchange...

I hesitate to buy from Rockler, they have virtually no customer service and their shipping is horrible. I've been waiting over a week for two hinges to show up, the last time I had to return a product, it took over a month to get a credit. Buyer beware.

Table saws and other power tools are only dangerous if you aren't paying attention or doing something stupid. I've been using all manner of them for over 50 years and have never had an accident. That being said, are people really setting up table saws to within 1/1000 of an inch? Seems totally unnecessary and completely ridiculous.

@JamesSmith-pd7rv
@JamesSmith-pd7rv 4 ай бұрын
@@wittworks, Check into reviewing the PALS to help with micro-adjustments for the trunnions. Regardless of whether the team is red or blue, you still have to make the trunnions adjustments. With the Ridgid, it takes a lot of loosening, adjusting, tightening, checking alignment, and repeating until you get it right. I hear the same for other brands as well. Too bad all the companies don't have something like the table saw PALS. I just received mine from Peachtree Woodworking in Atlanta. It made the adjustments much easier.

Using a saw blade to measure against is stupid and not accurate at all! You need a calibrated plate that mounts to the arbor to get repeatable measurements 😁🛫
