Great lessons for the kids to watch....got my young neighbor watching your channel and his mother thanked me so much as the boy learned more from you for free then weeks of $35 a half hour lesson here in town...instead of trying to form chords he is now playing along with you and sounds good and because of you he will be getting that electric guitar and amp for Christmas now.

I'm a senior player and gave up on the pick a long time ago...I choose my songs first for rhythm and love rockabilly and early Rock and Roll So I developed a strum that I can adapt to all the songs with great rhythm that I love to play...Since I'M not as loud because I Don't use a pick, I GOT myself a small AMP....It works for me because I've had people say...I wish I could play guitar like you...Thanks for posting all these great songs . AFTER 30 YEARS I'm trying to play rockabilly guitar FINALLY I understood these strumming patterns!!! I have collected BUNCHES of instructional books, videos, guitar methods, magazines, ... but I NEVER read or seen a clear explanation like your tutorial !!! my 'musical ear' is very poor, so I've never understood well only by listening the records, like many people do... I cannot 'play following the record', as a real musician should do... SO, THANKS A LOT FOR THIS TUTORIAL and your other lessons about rhythm rockabilly guitar! Your video is the first I saw doing the same thing I do, making clear the patterns I do teach about 30 diferent rythms, among them are : rock, samba, carnival marchinhas, reggae, serenade, waltz, guarania (from south Brasil), bossa nova, square dance, brasilian country, forró, soul, blues, gallop, foxtrot, minuet, flamenco, and many others. CONGRATULATIONS FOR YOUR HIGH QUALITY WORK!!!! Greetings from Brasil P. S. If you never heard about Yamandu Costa, is time to see him on youtube. He is an amazing 7 strings brasilian guitar player. You will be surprised!! Other great classic guitar player here is maestro Turibio Santos, director of the Villa-Lobos Museum.

A great lesson absolutely superb. I can remember as a young teen trying to master this in a pre KZbin era!!!! I used Bert Weedons play in a day and other 60s you can play type books,picked up for pennies in charity shops!!!! Then one day the planets lined up and I was able to hit the rhythm on all those classic rock and roll records. The penny dropped when a seasoned player told me son you never hear a rhythm guitar until it stops playing . Right up to this day I haven't altered my rhythm playing, the first song i got it right on was blue moon of Kentucky . I can remember playing old 45s on a dansette at 33 or 16 to get the strums pardon my rant this has taken me back 35 odd years!
@RocknRollSongbook2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the message. Yes, it’s so much easier for people learning guitar now we have KZbin. My learning experience 40 odd years ago was quite like yours. I used to pick the brains of every guitarist I met, and watched their fingers very closely. I spent hours studying the recordings of my musical idols.

@RocknRollSongbook Жыл бұрын
Thanks very much Ron! I've been playing guitar for about 44 years. Of course, how quickly you develop these skills can vary greatly from person to person. Although I played old rock 'n' roll songs from the beginning, I didn't really work on this technique until I'd been playing for a few years. I never had a teacher, and any teachers around probably wouldn't have been able to show me this stuff. I've always played at least a little (usually a lot) everyday. Being motivated to learn and really enjoying playing is what makes it all happen I think. Don't worry about playing fast at the beginning. Get the accuracy (clean notes chords) first, and the speed will follow.

I have a question about swung songs. If the guitar is swung, is it typucal that the singer will be swinging his melody too, or can it often be the case that the singer sings straight while the instrumentation is swung. It's always perplexed me. Is there sometimes a mix where singer may sing some things swung and some straight?
@RocknRollSongbook Жыл бұрын
Yes, when a song has a swing rhythm, the sung melody, instrumental parts and accompaniment are typically all swung. The are sometimes mixtures in rock ‘n’ roll though. Sometimes you’ll hear a drummer playing a swing rhythm, but a guitarist or pianist playing a straight riff. It seems likes it’s breaking the rules, but gives a song an interesting ‘push-pull’ feel. Like a rickety old car rolling along.

Just found the song Apron Strings by Curtis Hobock. What would be the best strumming pattern for that one? Would it be any different from the Cliff Richard version? This CH version is from Sun I think & it’s awesome!

There’s no ‘best’ really. That would be a subjective judgement. Any of the strumming patterns I teach here would work, if you make sure they ‘swing’. The electric guitar on the Hobock and the Richard version is doing something a little more ‘involved’ than I teach in this tutorial. I think the Hobock version is great. Really rough and ready. I hadn’t listened to it in a few years, so thanks for reminding me. 👍

An interesting idea! I've never given singing lessons before. I'll give it some thought.

Definitely I'm in the middle of writing a rock and Roll song that's is one of the reasons that I watched your vídeos and to have the voice of singing that style is not easy

Gostaria de ouvir você tocar ME AND BOBBY MCGEE NA versão do JOHNNY CASH...

Obrigado pelo pedido de música. Não é um que eu já tenha tocado antes, mas pensei em tocar por um tempo. Mas não se encaixa muito bem no tema desse canal de rock and roll.

Jez, I play electric guitar but would like to get an acoustic with a strong, biting (twang/metallic) tone. For rockabilly. Maybe you would hear this in Bluegrass style.Can you give me some information? I wouldnt be singing along just as a rhythm guitar player.

That's a tough one. Acoustic guitars can vary in sound a great deal -- depending on the make, construction, size, shape, materials, string gauge, and set up. My recommendation would be to go along to a shop that specialises in acoustic guitars and spend some time trying a few out until you find the sort of thing you're looking for. Bluegrass guitarists tend to favour guitars like the Martin D28.
