Back in the 1980's, I would eat at a small Jamaican restaurant in Monterey. I loved their jerk chicken so much, I bought a small bag of jerk seasoning. Whenever I barbequed, I would sprinkle a bit of seasoning on the meat, trying to make that bag last as long as possible. You have to remember, back in the 80's, Japanese restaurants were still a rarity; Jamaican restaurants were unheard-of.

For the ackee to be safe to eat, the fruit pod has to be opened naturally on the tree. Then it's safe to consume.

It can be eaten if it's fit enough to be picked, AND opens on its own.
@masonix_angel_morningstar78913 жыл бұрын
It can be picked when fully developed before opening. That is how ackee is harvested for mass sale. The fully developed ackees are then stored until they open on their own. I believe this process is done to prevent the ackee from going to waste as they can fall off trees sometime after opening
@lisab98363 жыл бұрын
@@masonix_angel_morningstar7891 ok, I can see that picking sale or canning. Maybe that's why a few years ago there was few cases of poisoning in my area from tin ackee. Fully develop might vary from person to person. To be safe, I just allow it to open on its own before I consumed.

However, I was eyeing the ox tail and the beef barbecue!!! I also enjoyed your lovely shirt! Plus, the music! And the proprietor had his gloves and mask on while preparing food from scratch and his restaurant was spotless!!! A major plus!! What is the saying? "Cleanliness is next to Godliness"? As a Jamaican, food looks great but, we normally do not eat rice and peas with seafood. Seafood is usually eaten with, bammy (cassava bread), Johnny cakes/ fried dumplings, festival (sweet fried corn bread), or white rice. I've never seen ackee and saltfish eaten with rice & peas. We have our own flat bread/ wrap called, roti. Traditional jerk meats are slow smoked, over green pimento wood not charcoals. Food does look good but not Traditional.

9:30 no no barbecued chicken is not remotely close to jerk chicken. Barbecue chicken is just grilled chicken dunked in store brought tangy barbecue sauce. Jerk Chicken on the other hand is a careful selection and application of seasonings such as scallion onion pimento peppers...(all blended together)that are allowed to soak in the chicken for a while and is cooked by enclosing the chicken on a grill over an intense flame. As the chicken cooks the juices that are secreted from the meat drips onto the coal which causes smokes to be created with also adds to the flavor of the chicken. In this video the chef wasn't able to do Jamaican jerk chicken the way Jamaicans actually do however this is pretty close. It's not close to what is considered barbecue chicken. Barbecue chicken is more similar to baked chicken than it is to jerk chicken.

I could tell it wasn't authentic jerk chicken. It is nearly impossible to find authentic jerk chicken outside of Jamaica. I've lived in New Jersey, Florida, Georgia and currently live in NYC and have been to many Jamaican restaurants here in the US. However, some of them do their best.

I went here last week Saturday, just because of this video. Was visiting from Sacramento. My husband Is Jamaican, and I love his cultural food! We were so disappointed! I had the stew chicken, my husband had the jerk. Let's start with the rice n peas! Now I've had tons of Jamaican food from several different Jamaican restaurants so I know good food. The rice taste like a it came from a pouch from Walmart, Both jerk and stew chicken were bland, no flavor at all. The food did not look like the video, so I'm thinking that they over did it just for the video. I will say though, we had the oxtail red pea soup, and that was the bomb! Flavorful and brought my husband back to his youth! If I go back it will only be for that soup! But I doubt if I'd go out of my way to go here just for soup. Also the jerk chicken was not cooked, my husband bit into a leg and there was blood! Not cool...
