rocky and mickey did have a conversation about mickey training him, it was right after the apartment scene, the conversation was off camera but you can see it and rocky and mickey shakes hands outside on the sidewalk near rocky apartment.

Actually, I'd say the loan shark giving Rocky money actually does make sense. Rocky is obviously going to be the underdog in the fight, and the loan shark will certainly get 'customer' via betting on the fight, especially locally. So then, knowing that Rocky has almost no money and eats a less than diverse diet, he gives him some cash that will one way or another go toward helping Rocky prepare for this fight either mentally or physically. Which will in turn help his chances a little, which will also in turn result in people losing more bets if he does well. All, ultimately, resulting in more customers for the loan shark by having the underdog - given the story - last better than 3 rounds. So nah, I'd say it makes sense in a roundabout way. Sort of like an investment in Rocky.

After Rocky yells at Mickey in his apartment, you see him chase Mickey down and they start talking. Although you don't hear what is said, this is probably them making amends and Rocky allowing Mickey to train him.

I always enjoyed these movies, but they took on a new meaning, after I met my wife. She came out of a situation like the relationship between Pailie and Adrianne, where her brothers and sister were verbally and emoney, abusive towards her. The change in her, over the series, mirrors the change on Adrianne through the series, almost perfectly. That never dawned on me until a couple years ago, when she was telling one of our friends about her, and her daughter's life, before I came into it. What made it click was him saying, ' I just can't picture you, the woman sitting here mow, ever putting up with being treated like that. " The next weekend, I broke out the original 4 movies. That's when it really sank in, for both of us. Even the age when we started dating almost matched up, as.she had just turned 30. That was almost 20 years ago. Sadly, we are not close with her family, but she pretty much says that it never felt like a family to her, back then, and still doesn't now. To the women in that type of situation, you are stronger than you realize, and there is always a way out. There are people who will stand up for you, with you, and help you get free of it, and ask nothing of you, but to be that person, when someone else, needs that hand up.

One of the main things about this movie that was unlike most of the movies of the time that helped sell the script was the idea that the "hero" loses the big climatic fight at the end.

I am kinda surprised Decker didn't talk more about how basically half of this movie was improvised on the spot....sometimes out of creative inspiration and others out of technical necessity when things would just not go as planned. Or how they paid the extras who showed up to act as spectators to the Rocky / Apollo fight in chicken dinners.

Rocky's story is kind've like Eric Moussambani's. Moussambani was an amateur swimmer who was suddenly given a chance to compete in the olympics. He was naturally the slowest swimmer there but was well known for the fact that he absolutely refused to give up during it.

I'm kind of surprised there wasn't a subplot where the Loan Shark tried to bribe Rocky into taking a dive on the fight so that he could bet against him and make a fortune... But then when you think about it, I'm pretty sure no one expected him to win the fight anyway so the odds were always on Creed's favor, asking Rocky to dive would be pointless.

Decker as good as your reviews can become; there are times where it is slightly less than magnificent. ..This is one of them. Keep in mind I'm NOT saying it was bad. I don't think you did a review I hate, but what I am saying is the two "draw backs" aren't really draw backs--you just don't understand the metaphor. As we all know the boxing was a stand-in for the emotional relations of Rocky's life (or Rocky's relationship with the world). The training scenes and almost every other boxing reference/scene was done to set-up or explain emotional scenes (or in a couple cases completes Acts) through not so subtle metaphors. The thing about "Rocky" is the metaphors' double meanings aren't forced and make perfect sense to the viewer, character and the avid boxer/fan (which this movie was marketed toward). I will go over two of the metaphors that explained the entire Acts and Movie: The "meat-bag" wasn't just some stupid Hollywood thing. It was a symbol of Rocky facing his problems and calling back to his said problem (which the movie already told us; I believe four times at this point)--Rocky NEVER took initiative in his life. He let people abuse/use him 'cause he felt like he wasn't good enough [this aspect of the movie is seen throughout the first Act repeatedly and expressed in the scene with the loan-shark and the date, when we find out, through a hint or him saying it...can't remember, that he is mildly retarded]. Through the abuse and confusion from Pauly [This is why Pauly was an asshole 'cause he was the physical manifestation of the Acts One and Two. He also stays as an icon of the peoples' motives involving Rocky.] Rocky has an idea and ignores Pauly abuse. This is the first time in the movie where Rocky CHOOSES to not believe in the negative slander and rejects self-loathing. This scenes literally shows Rocky "getting his hands dirty"; which calls back to Micks lecture--Rocky CHOOSES to do the "dirty business" to better others [low-lives that are using him] and not find the courage to help his self. This scene is showing Rocky DOING such actions [notice this happens AFTER Adrian takes off her glasses--i.e. a symbol of her shyness]. This of course leads to Micky's scene, where Micky comes to train him. Micky didn't come to get rich off him like the others, but Micky thinks that Rocky is finally taking charge of his life. This is why Micky was talking about his old cuts and bruises and why he needed a manager--in this situation the manager is symbolic for foundation (or balance). This is one of the MOST IMPORTANT SCENES IN THE MOVIE. This scene is a callback and reversal of Micky's introduction and the lesson that Rocky must learn. In Micky's introduction, he is lecturing that Rocky is not trying and when Rocky finally conquers this problem; it exposes the cause of the problem that was foreshadowed in the first scene in the movie--the boxing match in the church. For boxers and avid fans they know from the bad movement and the knocking down of Spider-Rico that Rocky has bad footwork...Rocky has bad foundation, (which is expounded upon within the entirety of the movie). Having bad balance is a problem for Rocky to overcome. And it shows in the matches and training--in the first match Rocky was slow and clumsy 'cause he was always defensive; never really fighting back, then he becomes super aggressive; attacking everyone, and finally he learns the balance of the two and uses it to go the beyond his expectations against the "key" person looking to exploit him. Back to Micky...he is attacking Micky 'cause he think Micky is out to use him just like everyone else. This is why he turns him down. Not out of disrespect but out of anger. Of course he goes to Micky after the explosion 'cause not doing so would be reverting back to how he was...running from his troubles. Tying the shoelace around your ankles help teaches you footwork, punching the meat-bags teaches you how to execute solid technique WITH good footwork. Footwork is the foundation of the boxer [it's all about balance, which goes with the theme of the movie]. This is what those two "draw-backs" meant and from your critique I take it that you never did ANY sports in your youth. "Staying away from women before the big game" is an old axiom about staying focus. Adrian--the woman--is a representation of Rocky's inner self. He is basically telling him "don't revert back to being a shy-kick-around-can like you use to be, which is fully shown later in the scene with Adrian on the bed after the montage. Adrian [now a completely "different" person] re-insures Rocky of what is really important--not betting the "world" but belief and self improvement. Now I do agree with you about the loan-shark and the five hundred dollars gift, but to be fair the movie was showing that he wasn't as bad as he seemed. Going on the dialogue, the slightly insubordinate hence and the fact that he has asthma and have no problem using an inhaler in public [keep in mind that the moment he uses it, he is making a speech about not appearing weak]. In conclusion: all in all this was a nice review. I like your stuff. Hope you get even more popular. Good job.

TheIrishScot Just because a scene is short doesn't mean he gets to act like it doesn't exist. Not to mention it's the cap to that entire scene when Rocky is going off about his life. He gets over it and finds it in himself to forgive Mickey, runs out and accepts his offer. To ignore that is to just look stupid. There doesn't have to be audible dialogue because the body language and music tell the story for you. Not everything has to be spoon-fed to audiences.

The reason Rocky felt like a real story is because it was. Muhammad Ali gave Chuck Wepner a chance at the championship belt only to have the fight called off in the last 20 seconds of the 15th round giving the victory to Muhammad. Rumor is Muhammad's trainer gave the referee $20,000 to cut off the flight before it ended no matter what happened and award the victory to Muhammad. And then chuck wepner had to take Sylvester Stallone to Court since Sylvester used Chuck's life story to form the script and screenplay for the first Rocky movie and not once credited him for it. Muhammad Ali was a racist piece of shit
@danielhill32617 жыл бұрын
Actually, Jon, you're wrong. DEAD WRONG. Here's why: Wepner was no victim, as you make him out to be. He was known for "dirty fighting," and in this fight, stepped on Ali's foot and pushed him down. The referee was on Wepner's side, not Ali's, and incorrectly called this a "knockdown." Film footage supports this. The fight wasn't cut off. Ali knocked Chuck Wepner out in the last round- the first time Wepner had been knocked out in his career. Everything you claim is false, and easily disproven by known facts. Anything else, man?
