I’m glad Bean still has his leg but I agree amputation is probably the next step if this happens again. You just can’t keep doing internal fixation to the same bone, it weakens too much. I see the stress in your face Rocky, please know you are a godsend for this puppy! Thank you for everything you are doing for Bean! Know you are doing everything right!

@@rockykanaka if it has to be amputated I think it is much better a back leg than a front leg. As a single retiree, I applied a couple years ago to adopt a front leg amputee, but they chose another applicant due to the additional support the puppy would require.

I adopted a 9month old three legged dog (front leg) a couple years ago and I agree with Carolyn that it is better to lose a back leg than a front leg. Bean is way too young now to get a prosthetic, but once he is full grown and filled out he could get fitted for one. I have seen some of the advocates for tripawd dogs say not to get it until they have no choice, but I think all that does is strain severely the remaining leg, put them in pain, cause more spine curvature and lower their quality of life. Tripawds can have a great life. You just need to be a little more careful with them since they don't realize they need to be more careful with their joints till they overstrain them

It's so hard to see our little fur babies suffer. We spent almost $10,000 on our rescue dog to fix her leg (2 surgeries). It was totally worth all the sacrifices we had to make to make that happen for her. Sending lots of love to Bean!

Someone made a respectful comment about the huge cost of saving one dog's leg VS all the other pressing needs out there. I think we can all understand what this person was saying, but I believe each person does things their own way to improve the world. It may be to donate money for people, but it can also be saving a dog. My take on this is that no matter what "cause" you embrace, it improves the world. No one knows what a dog like bean could become. Many animals that were rescued turn out to be a godsend for people in need, be they veterans, adults with physical or emotional disabilities or other animals (as a companion, for example). Thank you Rocky for stepping in.

My reply back to you, in good faith and not hate, is the unnecessary trauma Bean is going through just to save a shattered leg he could live without. I don't think any of us are rich any more given how much food and gas has gone up, and to see how much money is going into Bean for purely aesthetic reasons is a turn-off. Cost is a non issue for life-saving emergencies, but this case is ridiculous. I love Rocky and his show, but there comes a point when emotions need to be put aside and one needs to weight the pros and cons. Had Bean gotten the amputation from the start, he'd be well on his way to adapting and not wearing a cone that should be trimmed down. I agree with your point on animals being a godsend for people. Bean doesn't need all four legs to be somebody's forever dog.

@@amandajayne2619 I don't think it's true that saving his leg is just for aesthetic reasons. Dogs usually adapt well to life as a tripod, but there can be complications and sometimes it can go badly. He would be healthier if his leg could be saved. That said, I'm not sure the cost of the two plus surgeries was worth it considering it could have been used to greater effect on another dog with a life or death problem. But in the grand scheme of things, I don't think it really matters which choice is better than which. You can't predict exactly what the future will hold, you just have to try to do your best by each dog.

We had the same surgery with an Australian Cattle Dog we rescued when he was around 10 months old. He had been running loose for 6 weeks and 2 weeks before my friend was able to catch him he had been hit by a car and his left hind leg was shattered in 2 places. We invested around $7500 and he has a plate, 2 wires, 6 screws holding his leg to the plate. It was TOUGH going through it as he had a hard cast on his neck, and got an infection under the cast, then had to get the cone. He was on 6 meds…tranquilizers and pain killers. His scar looks like Beans. Mahomes is now 3 and doing great. A mechanical hip socket or amputation was also what would have happened if the surgery had failed. Beans will be the BEST dog the other side of this!!! When I was told the price (and I had only had him 3 days) all I could say was “how good of a dog are you going to be”? His adorable eyes, and wagging tail won me over. He went through so much being alone 6 weeks, incredible pain the last 2 and still having to find food to survive and keep from being someone else’s food how could I not say “it’s only money - you’re worth the chance”. He didn’t let us down. ❤

How kind of you to donate! Typically surgical hardware isn't removed. The bone, tendons, muscles or wherever, grow around it. The most successful are well incorporated into the skeletal structure. The ones that are removed are external fixation devices. That would have a structure outside of the extremity affected. ❤

I don’t understand why they didn’t put his leg in some kind of immobilized. Also, I broke my arm up by the shoulder some years ago, when they did surgery they used dissolveable plates and pins instead of metal, so as my arm healed they simply dissolved into the healed bone. I’m surprised I don’t hear much about them being used more often. They worked great. Love you little bean!

Having raised Heeler's in the early '80's- a very, very, very energetic breed and difficult to harness the energy, so the max pain management is understood. Hope the plate holds, yet if in the end it leads to amputation, three legged Heeler's will more the compensate for the loss of one rear leg! Celebrate little 'Jumpin' Bean.' Even if he does lose that little leg; AND I SINCERELY PRAY HE DOES NOT, he will survive to live a fun and jubilant life. Amazingly, dogs do very well with one lost back leg; even the herding Blue Healer types of dog.
