ROD KNOCK!!! What it looks like inside the engine. How to determine if you have rod knock by taking off the oil pan. This car is a 1996 Toyota Paseo 1.5 liter. The oil circuit for cylinder one got a piece of foil blocking it. The connecting rod on that cylinder died an ignominious death.

Thanks for the video. Had 3 major mechanical engine failures in the past year, on 2 separate Vulcan motors. First was original, bad main seal and knocked when warm. So I buy a low mileage used motor, 40K or so. Head cracked within a month bleeding the oil into the antifreeze. Swapped heads off the old motor, new gasket ect. The next day something broke loose on the highway and began knocking. I got it almost loose. Thanks again for showing us.

Excellent video... takes me back to when I lifted a complete engine out through the top by hand (no hoist) and on my own. It was a Ford Popular side valve in England. Gave me a bad back for a year but heck everything has a price. Now I have a 3.5 Camry 2GR engine and I don't even fancy doing a water pump if it ever goes... times sure change. Wonderful nostalgia video for me.

I think I speak for a lot of folks when I say that I don't care if your videos are edited or not. Sure they may look nicer, but the point of the videos isn't to be production quality and show off your cinematography skills. The point is to get knowledge across to us viewers, and you do a very good job at that. Thanks again from everyone, and keep up the good work!

I like the video, good subject and substance, I am not one for editing and music and all that for technical videos. I would like you to discuss options to recon the crankshaft and how much it would have cost all in to rebuilt the bad engine compared to replacement engine tally of costs and why engine replacement was best. Engine swap reasons could include that the owner wanted less shop time for the vehicle or owner wanted engine replaced. You did a good job to explain the situation.

Thanks dude! My 2005 ZX6R 636 was acting up and started knocking :( and I thought it was a thrown rod or a spun bearing at first until it got worse... Even though initially, I thought it was an extreme case of CCT failure and/or guide failure... You helped me make a educated guess and I believe 'you' and 'it' was correct. I pulled my engine (took 2 hours) and will find out tomorrow when I crack her open... The carnage lol. Thanks again bro, very informative!!! :)

Thank you for this video, Brian. My 2006 VW Jetta is making a thumping / knocking sound occasional and usually while I gently accelerate. I'm trying to determine where it's coming from, and it sounds like the front passenger side. I had new tires put on about 6 weeks ago, but the tires are built for inclement weather not a quiet ride. I'm trying to establish if I'm hearing road noise, or if it's my precious engine. Fingers crossed it's just road noise, but I think I'm going to have to drop it off at the garage to have it checked out.

This was good, thank you. I was looking for a video that would actually show the Babbitts (shims) riding hydraulically on a thin film of oil, like they do when everything's tight. I want to show my son what happens when the oil loses its nice viscosity, or the oil pressure is insufficient to float the bearings under high load. I don't know how someone would ever get a picture of such a thing, but it would be interesting to see - even a bearing "spinning". Your video is good and wiggling the bad connecting rod is certainly a legit diagnosis. Other good key points were mentioned.

@Jaredsarusrex That's usually the clutch disc/pressure plate. That year wasn't geared low enough in 1st gear and they had real problems with airport parking lots, steep driveways, and high slope low speed areas. The following years 04 and newer corrected that. You have to pull the engine and trans out the front (take of the front bumper completely) to replace the clutch. It sounds bad, but BMW makes it come apart modularity and it's not too bad. It's pretty fun.

Thanks for the vids and great advice. My 01 Altima engine finally blew (literally a 3 in hole through block). Took your advice on JDM motor and scored big paying less than half the price of a rebuilt plus it only had 56380 miles on it. Unfortunately shrapnel from the exploded piston blew a hole in my front cat converter making the car loud and no exhaust comes out rear. Rear cat looks easily to replace Can you give me an idea on how difficult the front would be? I'm broke so its got to be DIY.

@manmanbanana Often times I'll install a wrecking yard engine and it will knock at first and then quiet down after driving a while. It's knocking because oil isn't getting where it needs to be fast enough for whatever reason. The thing to do is to not run it too long at a time or else the rod bearings can get hot and thin out leaving you with a permanent rod knock. Make sure the oil is full and get it level. Run with the oil cap off and make sure oil is getting to the top of the engine.

Thank you, my wife's car's engine just had this happen, so severe that there were pieces of shrapnel and contaminated oil left in the oil pan, the engine basically exploded according to the gentleman who fixed the car. We immediately pulled off the freeway when it happened and stopped driving it immediately, so I figure it's something like what you describe here where it was happening over time and then it just finally locked up and shit itself.

@Avizponverde Thanks for your comment. Unfortunately I know exactly how hard it is to salvage a Toyota 1.5L whether in a Paseo or a Tercel (95-96) You have to machine the rods, crank, and everything. Many times it's best to do a motor swap if you can find a good one. I know the vehicle value isn't real high on those so machining expenses can put you over budget.
@jeffman3
@jeffman3 11 жыл бұрын
Something I would like to point out that wasn't mentioned in the video- sometimes you can have a rod knock cause solely by detonation (happened to me) where the crank and rod won't be damage. The noise will come from the upper bearing half being too heavily compressed, allowing extra up-and-down movement. It's often possible to salvage engines in this case with a set of new rod bearings- I am currently in the middle of doing this to an old Camry to coax some extra life out of it.
