It's a completely different skillset from just being socially funny. And there's timing. The laughter should die down enough for your next lines to be heard, but not too late that you get silence.

By themselves most of the jokes were funny; but Rodney knew how to push them into the stratosphere. My favourite, which has now passed its best date, is "I get no respect. I'm in the elevator, the guy always says "Basement?" Oh man...

@@dickrichard626 His jokes are honed over time and many tests and the clubs. These aren't just pulled out of nowhere. They're carefully crafted, practiced and timed. Because they're on-liners he can string them together with some clever transitions. Add to that Rodney was VERY quick and could break out many of his classic jokes for many conversation occasions.

This man had the biggest heart I just listened to his biography and it just broke my heart he was so abused as a child his mother was so cruel to him his dad took off and he never saw him as cruel as his mother was he went to work as a little boy to support her and himself so they could eat he supported her forever he’s just amazing. He worked forever and ever to get a break as a comedian went through so much then his wife died and he gave up everything to support his two kids he didn’t want to abandon them. He had so much love and he was so darn funny. I just loved him and I miss him He also helped so many comedians get their start nobody does that what a great man!!!!♥️

Both were legends. Rodney Dangerfield was a comedian's comedian. His rapid fire, A-list hilarious jokes always had his audience in tears, laughing. They still work 40+ years later. Johnny Carson was the perfect straight man to Dangerfield's jokes and the quintessential talk show host, always allowing his guests to be the center of attention. Many comedians and talk show hosts today should watch these two and take notes.

@julietjowett9678
@julietjowett9678 6 жыл бұрын
and i believe the converse is also correct - humor at the "expense" of another is rooted in insecurity and inner turmoil - like bullying - just because there's a reason - doesn't make it an excuse - I was watching an interview with Leonard Cohen this morning about Hallelujah - and expected and wanted to a learned discussion with one of the greatest poets of our time about his own interpretation of the words and the reasons that he chose the sounds that he did to match them - instead the interviewer wanted to gossip about other people's performances of the piece - Cohen tried to correct him - the interviewer ignored the remark and this time Cohen was loud and clear in his view - but the interview continued down that path - always trying to get him to be critical and negative - Cohen - always seeing what is true - the beauty and compliment in someone wanting to use his words and music ... in the end when the interview was over - he asked "did you get anything interesting?" and they said yes - and he replied something along the lines of "maybe we should keep going - we might get something interesting" - my oh my - I love a brilliant mind and a way with words - it's not passive aggressive - it is polite and pointed - I wonder if they ever understood what he meant? I doubt it.
