At 1:26 you can read clemens lips “I thought it was the ball.” I can see how instinctively he’s ready to field like norma and it isn’t until it gets to his hand that his brain registers it being the bat and not the ball. He’s already in the throwing motion when he realizes this.

Nah. You can see his head track the ball as it goes left, then his knees juggle the broken piece for a good half-second before he deliberately picks it up. If he thought it was the ball, why would he throw it at Piazza instead of to first anyway? This was pure 'roid rage.

There is literally no way he would be able to pick up a 17” long, 2 3/4” wide cylinder of wood, transfer it to his throwing hand, and begin to throw it all without realizing it wasn’t a baseball. Even if he could, why was he throwing the baseball at Piazza?

The fact that Clemens didn’t get tossed from the game right there and then is mind boggling. You can throw a bat at someone and stay in the game? What a terrible precedent to set. Even his excuse was BS; “I thought it was the ball.” Yeah, because it’s normal to throw a fair ball AT the runner. That’s how baseball is played. Give me a break. I understand it’s the World Series and the umps want to let the two teams play without going ejection crazy, but come on. This isn’t two pitchers plunking hitters in the ass back and forth. He threw a jagged wooden stake at someone! That idiot should have been gone, maybe even fined or suspended.

For context, there was so much build-up (and no surprise that the media continually fed the narrative and played up their prospective “show down”)between these two after Clemens beaned Piazza earlier in the season, Clemens let all that tension out on baseball’s largest stage, in a way that made absolutely no sense. You can see how he was not throwing the bat AT Piazza (unless he was trying to lead him), but such a bum move regardless.

If mlb used metal bats balls would be hit so much harder than they are. 120-130 mph exit velocities would be standard fare. A hard hit line drive at that speed, especially one back at the pitcher, would go from being slightly dangerous if mis-fielded to potentially fatal if it gets you in the right spot. Home run numbers would be through the roof. Teams would be scoring 15+ runs every game, because every routine fly ball to the outfield off of a wood bat would be over the fence with the pop of a metal bat. Seems like it would just make the game more dangerous, boring, and lopsided, all so that bats can’t break, which has injured something like 4 people in the recorded history of the sport, and so that pitchers can’t throw shattered bat barrels at runners, which has happened once in the same time period. Seems to me like you’re not quite sure what you’re talking about.

Always hated this and Tim McCarver, Clemens is a 7 time Cy Young winner with over 4000 Ks if he was aiming for Piazza then Piazza would have a bat sticking out of where the sun don't shine , but yes great Tv.

I’m sure that half of a bat has the exact same weight, shape, aerodynamic properties, and center of gravity as a baseball. Experience throwing a baseball means almost nothing if you’re throwing something vastly different from a baseball, because it behaves differently in the air and needs to be gripped and thrown differently. I absolutely agree that Clemens is damn good at throwing a baseball, and he would’ve hit Piazza if he were throwing a baseball at him, but he’s not so great at throwing bat barrels. Even if you don’t believe that Clemens tried to hit Piazza with the bat, he certainly threw it near him, which is completely unacceptable in itself. If he threw behind him with the baseball, his team would get warnings if not him get thrown out due to the importance of the game. Maybe try to look past the blind Yankee fandom clouding your vision and admit your douchebag Yankees did something wrong for once.
