One of my favorite Orchids. It took me some years but I finally grow some very well. Fussy they are indeed!

Getting a good well-rooted plant to start with seems to be the key.

I'm from New Zealand and New to orchids. I just 4x today at a local fair lol cost hubby a bit lol. One of them is this type you were talking about. I'm thinking trust me to fall in love with one of the hardest ones. I'll try my best.

My impression is that the yellow M. roezlii is fairly common in the US. I've seen it for sale in large quantities. I chalk that up to different countries' markets being somewhat decoupled on account of the impediments to trade.

I love them, fortunately in Northern Nz we have higher humidity here, and semi tropical climate, they`re growing well i totally understand why you want to persevere

It's very true that most orchids hate sitting with wet roots through the cold of mid winter and Miltoniopsis really do hate stale media. They do however still need oxygen which they get from flushing through their roots so I don't use moss which holds the moisture and turns stale after a while. I make sure, before winter starts, that they are potted in something which doesn't take too long to dry out. I put medium bark at the base then a mix of medium/small bark with either pumice or very small lava rock pieces (which you can buy). That way the fine roots can find their way through but don't sit in stale media. It's better to water/feed a bit more in summer than lose the roots in winter. Yes Spicesotics sold the xanthina form when you bought the other 2. I wondered why you didn't buy one instead of one of the others as you've always wanted one 🤷♀️ I bought the same as you along with the xanthina and alba because I also love them. I repotted after a week because I never trust what they come in. They did have some short live roots and it looks like a big plant has been divided into pieces. Nothing has died, 2 flowered fine after the repot but not the xanthina yet. When this spell of real cold is over I would repot and perhaps just find a place in the kitchen or bedroom windowsill for a few weeks 🤔

I got my first one at an orchid show in March and it took almost a year for it to make new roots after repotting. I think the colder temperatures helped, but maybe it just needed time. The mix is mostly bark but there's some coconut husk and leca to keep it cooler. The new growth (fan?) is growing sideways and the pseudobulb started developing recently. I might try another one in the future if it blooms again.

Roezlii xanthina was in stock at Spiceotics. Those are bare rooted tho. I am currently struggling with mine to grow roots.
@RogersOrchidsGardenandBonsai3 күн бұрын
It's still in stock but does say recently potted with few roots. I doubt these would do well.

Re-potting my Miltoniopsis to bark doesn't stress them as much as leaving them in an unhealthy media.

Miltoniopsis are some of my favorites but i dont have much success with them. They are red spider mite magnets and i can never get them completely pest free.

Roger what does the temature go down to in the winter for you for the miltoniopsis, and how hi does the tempture go for you in the summer?
@RogersOrchidsGardenandBonsai4 күн бұрын
I drop down to 12-13C on the thermostat for the heater in Winter. In Summer, my normal day temps are around 23-24C but I can get as high as 26-27C on occasions.

My mom wants to what is the Growth Medium for a Phalaenopsis Orchid ?
@dianeandorchidsatvictorharbor3 күн бұрын
@EleanorWindhorst I have some in Orchiata bark and some in a 2 parts bark and 1 part perlite. I don't see any difference in the way they are growing at the moment. I water once a week on average, but I take note of the roots (I use clear pots) if they are green - no water, roots silver/white - water.

Miltoniopsis roezlii is named for Bernedikt Roezl. Because it is a person's name, that pronunciation takes precedence. However, zero people pronounce it that way that I have ever heard. Because the name is pronounced rhut-zl ,the plant would be rhut-zlee. I mean, maybe German or Czech people might pronounce it correctly, but for English speakers the default for Roe is row and the plant is generally pronounced row-zlee.
@be67154 күн бұрын
I look at it as ree-zl, since in German, I think the long ee would be pronounced, as the 'o' before the 'e' makes it a long e?
@RogersOrchidsGardenandBonsai4 күн бұрын
I think I'll stick with Reezlee-i as, with an 'oe' to start and double 'i' at the end, the word is Latin as is Coelogyne (See-lodge-inni)
@michaelmccarthy40773 күн бұрын
@@RogersOrchidsGardenandBonsai it is absolutely not Latin, it is a Czech name, which is not a Latin language, it is Slavic. That is exactly my point, we are trying to shoehorn non-latin words into Latin and it causes a mess. Let's say, hypothetically, that Frampton became pronounced Burger in Latin. If there was a plant called Dendrobium framptonii, are you going to call it framp-tun-ee-eye or berg-err-ee-eye? This is why the pronunciation of the surname is supposed to take precedence over Latin. And why Stanhopea is properly stan-hope-ah, not stan-hope-ee-aa, and Fredclarkeara is fred-clark-are-ah, not fred-clark-ee-are-ah.
@michaelmccarthy40773 күн бұрын
@@be6715 I asked my Czech friend how they would say it (since Roezl was Czech), and phonetically, rhut-zl is the best way to approximate it that I can come up with. It is definitely not a simple ee or uh sound. But in German, Schröder (or Schroeder) is definitely not ee, the lips would be round and the tongue in the back of the mouth.
@be67153 күн бұрын
@@michaelmccarthy4077 I wouldn't think that Schroeder would have an ee sound (sorry, not sure how to do an umlaut here, since the umlaut would make a long o sound. Back in my horticulture school days, one of my profs said 'say the names with enough conviction that you make others question that they are saying it correctly. Another school of thought is that the name is said based on the native language it came from. As such, I know a company that says Agastache is A-gast-a-key, rather than Ag-a stach-ee. LOL. Potato, patato. :)
