Thanks for the review, and the research on this Tony. Finally I know the reason why I only ever heard of this adaption but never saw it. I read the book years ago and saw Manhunt probably around the same time, but this version always eluded me. I did finally see a decent version of it here on KZbin recently and it holds up rather well. It reminded me little of the 1978 version of The 39 Steps in look and feel. As always, keep up the great work Tony!

Even with it's meagre budget ROGUE MALE still brilliant tv. Im sure I had a same crappy dvd copy. A top flight cast all working perfectly John standing particularly good as collaboter whose jovial jocular exterior hides a nasty individual (think Tory MPs ) Great review as usual Hope you well

The BBC made it on the cheap. I sincerely hope they don't still have the rights and give it to their new partner Disney to remake it on a mega-budget. They've already destroyed enough fond memories. many thanks, Graeme. T.

I remember watching it on release, I’m shocked to discover it was 1976. I bought the book soon after and enjoyed that too. I’d like to see it again, it’s not often that a single telly experience sticks with you for over 40 years

I think this would work better as a novel. While I enjoyed the TV movie (thanks for bringing it to my attention), it does feel like a stream of consciousness story without the character's internal monologue being available to us. Michael Byrne and Michael Sheard got to rehearse for their roles in 'Indiana Jones & The Last Crusade' into the bargain.
