My take on this has always been Lex had a extremely regimented upbringing, his reasoning for seemingly being on hand for highschoolers was his keen interest in Clark, it allowed him to live vicariously through them, and finally he likes to study human interactions as we all know he must develop a near superhuman understanding of the human pysche in order to be able to counter Clarks supernatural powers (understanding all that takes place in the future), but its still relevant to his (Lex's) origins story.

I personally love that Michael is a critic and Tom is more optimistic with Ryan to balance it out as a first time viewer. I know its not always going to be Michael being a critic etc but it just feels so fitting giving the casting roles and just how seemingly effortless your friendship has blossomed over the years from the making of Smallville.

I agree. Michael made this Lex not only my favourite Lex but also my favourite villain - I never ever root for the bad guy and I block my empathy but with Lex I can't. Yes, I love Superman, he's my favourite superhero, but (as awesome as Tom was as Clark) it was Lex who made me hooked on the Smallville series. Even knowing how it ends in general, I kept coming for the next episodes hoping to see more good in Lex.

seriously. Rosey is BY FAR the best Lex Luthor. Like, I don't think he really appreciates how good his depiction of the character was. I mean, Gene Hackman played the character sort of like the Golden Age version which was this grandiose, mustache-twirling super criminal who refers to himself as the world's greatest criminal mastermind in the films. He was basically Moriarty to Reeves Superman/Holmes in that regard. Rosey's Lex was a far more believable, nuanced and relatable villain - the kind that doesn't think themselves as the villain, but rather the people's champion. THAT'S Lex Luthor. At least the more modern interpretation. And Rosey was f'n BRILLIANT in bringing Lex to life.

When it's warranted absolutely. But initially he wanted to give Rogue 1/2 a rose which is less than Craving. 😄 Which is ironically an episode most of the fanbase trashed for 12+ years until Amy got famous. LOL Opinions are subjective. But the majority of the fanbase considers Rogue a standout of the series. Many people in the FB thread were saying Rogue is one of their favorite eps of the whole show and the best ep of S1. **So I'm still in shock that he considers it on par with Bug Boy and weaker than Craving. 👎 I was actually thinking that it would get at least a 2-2.5 across. Especially from Ryan who trashed it pretty heavily as well.

The reason Clark’s clothes rarely get damaged, in some areas of Superman lore, is because he has an invulnerability aura that extends beyond his body several millimeters. Essentially, making the clothes invincible to damage to a degree. Jackets damage because of the thickness or distance from the body exceeds aura limits.

When John Byrne reinvented Superman in the 80's he explained a very small "force field" about half an inch off of Clark's skin. Which explains why his skintight costume never tears. His cape did though!

Byrne explored this aspect of Clark well before his run on Superman. He did it through a Superman proxy character in Marvel named Gladiator. None other than Reed Richards figured out that Superman/Gladiator's powers were as much mental as physical, and he had, as outlined above, an aura to not just protect him and his clothes from harm, but also those he is saving- hence if Superman is holding someone in a building on fire and flies through a wall, he doesn't pulp that person because he is unconciously extending that aura around his immediate vicinity. In the Superman comics in the 90's they gave it a name: Tactile Telekinesis. The scenic route to "Clark's clothes are fine". 🤣

Ryan was on the spot about chloe. She's a teenager with all these insecurities and fears, early chloe always seemed to be supressing her deepest feelings. So for me it made perfect sense that she would freak out about both losing her dream job and the space where she can get near the guy she likes

Especially to Lana who she is not very close to yet and knows Clark is infatuated with. I thought it was pretty accurate to how a 15 year old would react. 26:52 - I interpreted Jonathan telling Clark “I need you to be strong” via appearing to be weak. He knows Clark’s weakness is when he gets emotional and thereby potentially losing control over his abilities. By reminding him to be strong emotionally, Clark can remember to suppress his power and not only prevent anyone from getting hurt unintentionally, but more importantly, intentionally. We get to see a glimpse into Jonathan’s lessons that Man of Steel portrayed such as “you have to decide what kind of man you want to be Clark”.

Here’s my take on a few of the scenes that you guys were talking about: Michael, I think Chloe’s overreaction had more to do with the fact that it was Lana taking over The Torch; had it been anyone else, she would’ve been upset but not seen it as a threat. You have to remember that in her mind, Lana was already taking Clark from her and now she was stealing the one other thing Chloe loved. I completely understood her reaction because she was blinded her by emotions and unable to think clearly in the moment. As for the scene where Clark was so aggressive with Lex, who was just trying to help, I took that as Clark wanting to protect Lex. His father had tried to help and look where that got them. Now here’s Lex wanting to get involved and Clark is very adamant about Lex staying out of it because he doesn’t want Lex to end up being hurt by Phelan. He can’t let anyone else get involved and his fear is making him come across as aggressive. Anyway, those were the thoughts I had while watching the scene. I’m still really loving this weekly discussion!

Right? It's really hard to remember because the actors are in ther 20s 😂but these characters are supposed to be around 15. When I was 15, I overreacted exactly like this to way smaller stuff. From Chloe's perspective, Lana is the girl who gets everything - popularity, everyone's (most importantly Clark's) obsession with her, etc - handed to her on a silver platter. But the Torch is *Chloe's* thing, her passion, something she gets to be proud of, something she defines herlsef by, and then BAM! - it gets handed to LANA as well! For no reason other than Lana just being there (again, from Chloe's point of view). After all the work Chloe had put into it! And the Clark factor didn't help as well. It's not Lana's fault, not remotely, but I totally get why Chloe would feel furious and betrayed and would just let all those not so deeply buried feelings burst out. I remember feeling like this VIVIDLY when I was young.

I think the point where Chloe "lost it" towards Lana becoming editor, that makes sense. Not only is The Torch Chloe's thing, and not only are they young and so perhaps more emotional, keep in mind this .... Lana and Chloe are NOT really friends yet. They have both been in Clark's orbit, and they are friendly towards one another, but they are not really friends at this stage.

The Torch was Chloe's Identity so to speak and she felt threatened by Lana just seemingly waltzing in and taking it over! Rogue is so underrated and doesn't get enough love. It's the best ep of S1 and one of the best of the whole show. Here's my top 10 reasons why : 1) Bus - Best practical effect of the show. 2) "I can't see myself going into battle with that on my chest" was a GREAT and hilarious Supeman reference. 3) Lex's psychology of conquering and seeing the world in "gray" was shown. 4) Kelly Brook was arguably the hottest female guest star and her chemistry with Mike is on fire. 5) Phaelon was a great non FOTW protagonist and one of the best villains. 6) Tom's acting with the anger scenes was so good. 7) The bullet time was well done. 8) It had emotional moments with Clark and his folks. Especially Johnathan telling Clark to ctrl his temper with the prison scene. 9) You get to see Clark think on his feet and use intelligence. 10) The cliffhanger ending with Lex seeing the blur on the computer was the perfect close out.

I was annoyed by the guest star... Not because of bad acting, he was good...It's the character... Phelan was soooo dirty, so vicious, bigger villain than all freaks 😅 together. I mean, he put Clark through so much. Tom's performance was great, especially scene when he confronted Phelan in the house. It was so real, you could feel his anger!Special effects were astonishing!Talk Ville is getting more, and more exciting!

These discussions of each Smallville episode is wonderful to hear. Just hearing you guys dissect each scene in an episode giving your view points as to what could've improved is a nice fresh take. Also getting more special guest stars and hearing what they thought about the episodes is another great addition.

I liked the first scene where Lex and Clark talks about the shield of Alexander the Great, it looks like the shield of Superman. The effect of the bus was so epic, it definitely holds after 21 years. It's amazing to me that the barn is so open and exposed that everyone can enter. Why would the police give lex open the "bomb"? it was so weird to me. The slow motion in the bullet scene was so great, I like that Clark starts to be more aware of his powers. Lex begins to suspect Clark more bit by bit… I love Al comments. It's really interesting to hear from the creator of the show about the episodes! I will give the episode a 🌹

Another great episode - thank you so much for doing this! One thing not discussed - as Phelan was dying, Lex tried to get him to tell what he had on Clark. Very telling on Lex's overly curious character.

The bullet-time scene sounded great in Dolby Surround - the bullet pans from left to right then, WHOOSH! down the centre. I had a kick-ass home cinema set-up in 2001 and Smallville gave it a good workout. I used to record the show from broadcast TV (Channel 4 in the UK)

Great episode! I was in my late teens/early 20s when Smallville was airing. Re-watching the episodes now as a parent has been an EXPERIENCE. I felt all of Jonathan Kent's emotional journey, as a parent who'll do anything to protect their child. A brilliant performance by John Schneider.

About the clothes not ripping... in some iterations of the character, Superman has an invisible aura around that protects his suite and clothes, that's why he hardly ever breaks his Superman suite, remember that in some iterations the Superman suite was made by Martha Kent with just regular clothing material and used the coat that kept baby Kal El through the depths of space to make the cape.

Although I have to say Michael, You could not possible understand Chloes reaction since you have never been a teenage girl! haha.. Allisons acting was spot on! .. I think Girls and Women loved her character because they could totally relate to her in the highschool years and insecurities.. She was my favorite female character, it was awesome watching Chloe grow into the character that she became in the end ... You guys rock thanks for the entertainment!

I truthfully love how antalitical as well as critical Michael and Tom are. Especially with this particular episode. It's great to hear their perspectives of how the episodes look/feel because they were the ones who worked behind the scenes of the episode in regards to the acting. So it's good to see them point things out about scenes/moments which makes it more intersting. And I understand them being critical of themselves/work because as others said artists can be particularily critical of their work, but so can everyone else, even I am critical of my work. But, more so artists. Despite all that Rosey should be proud of his work/time as Lex, because he proud so many new layers to this version.Who was more cunning, smart, well read, didn't see himself as villian, but I believe wanted to be a hero early on and genuinly I also believe cared for Clark as a brother, even after turning and fully becoming Clark's enemy. Most certainly without doubt the best version of Lex Luthor.

I appreciate how critical Michael is of the storylines. He’s NOT shitting on the show, he’s just stirring an honest discussion about the things that worked and the things that didn’t (for him). And. Michael, you were right about Phelan appearing in a later episode (Zero), in a flashback scene.

When it's warranted absolutely. But Rogue has traditionally been a hailed as a standout of the series and often the best ep in S1. So it was quite shocking to see Mike initially rate it lower than Craving and on par with Bug Boy. LMAO In the FB announcement almost every comment said "one of my all time favorite episodes" or "best episode of S1". So logically I don't understand the hate that Mike and Ryan had. 🤷‍♂️

Tom's view that Clark is more or less the "freak of the week" was spot on. I was thinking that right before he said it... Also, Michael's critique of the show makes perfect sense... when it's something you worked on or it's something you created you're always going to be very critical of it. Especially if you're a perfectionist... it'll always feel like you could have done a better job even if your work appears perfect.

Another very enjoyable episode! The Phelan plot had a "darker, more grown-up" feel, which worked for me, because Clark seems very young and vulnerable in the orbit of this corrupt cop. And always enjoy Lex's obsessive pursuit of the mysteries of Clark!

They give constructive criticism, it good!!!! I love that I can learn what was going on behind the scenes, that I can lead from the perspective of the actors who brought the characters to life, and that they call out the plot holes or things that were not well thought through because some parts pull the viewer out, and they are noticeable. Love this podcast

“El” is one of the Hebrew names for a god and also means “might” and “strength”. The reason so many characters are named with LL in Smallville is because so many characters were named LL in Superman comics. This goes back to the creators Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster’s Jewish heritage.

For me the Best season 1 episode right here. Forget the B story with the Lana and Chloe, Rogue has got so many layers: - Kent family dynamic, their greatest fears realised, Clark's biggest challenge so far, played by an actor who hits all the right notes for a dirty cop. - Lex feeling rejected by Clark when offering to help. - Lex obsession with Clark just took another twist. Great little cliffhanger at the end with the blur speeding away. Loving the trip down memory lane. Keep up the great work!

What's awesome is Rosenbaum voicing Lex Luthor in "The Great Brain Robbery" in Wally West's body while playing Lex Luthor in Smallville. That was so meta back in 2006. Clancy Brown doing Rosey's Wally West impression is just hilarious in Justice League Unlimited.

Phelan. This bad cop who threatens and blackmails teen Clark is truly creepy! And the scene where Clark goes to visit his father in jail and tells him "I was protecting you and mom", it moves me every time. Clark is the future Superman, right, but right now he's just a teenager with super powers, but still a boy with the heart and soul already aimed at protecting human beings and especially those he loves more than himself like his parents and friends. This is the demonstration that it's not the Hero who makes the Man but it's the Man who makes the Hero! Great episode. Thank you guys for this new episode of Talk Ville. When you think about it, that Detective really had a set of brass tacks. He see's a guy stop a bus with nothing but himself, seeks to verify it with his own eyes by dropping an engine block on him and then seeks to *extort* this guy? For all he knew Clark could have torn him literally a part with his bare hands and bury bits of him all over his corn field.

The name thing is super common in comics. Marvel: Peter Parker, Betty Brant, Bruce Banner, Reed Richards, etc. I think there is something where the names just stick on your mind. I noticed as time went on, less characters were named this way. I think the X-Men barely did it. But yeah, a lot of early Marvel, DC and Archie comics created names like that.

What an episode! Clark Kent almost goes 'Rogue' with anger. The episode very nicely depicts that even the strongest man can become a victim of his weaknesses. Thank goodness Clark has a father like Jonathan who teaches him self-control and humility. I liked Tom's performance in this one very much. He is officially my favourite younger Clark while Late Mr. Christopher Reeve being my all-time favourite Clark/Superman. And as I said in my previous Jitters comment, we get to see the other side of Lex who while being a 'friend' also wants to uncover Clark's truth. Michael and Tom just keep getting better and better with every Smallville episode. The podcast was equally enjoyable. It's a real treat to watch Michael & Tom talking to each other and having so much fun! Keep up the good work.
