I think that Phantom's low level abilities are being very underestimated here. Having a free extra proficiency that you can swap around to whatever you need that day is very potent, and extra damage is extra damage, especially when that second creature doesn't make any save or anything against it, provided you hit the first one. I'm with you on that. If the DM wants to do some particular spin on it, I'd suggest it be tied to a particular quest or something. I think they mentioned a lich wanting a soul, then allow the lich to in some way temporarily enhance it or give them an item that uses the ability so they can capture a single soul, and one that has to be particularly powerful and worthy. Or if you want to capture the soul of a party member whose soul on death will belong to some evil entity in order to save them, maybe that would make a nice quest line. Kind of to push some extra ammo for Kelly: One of the issues with Rogue Subclasses is that they don't get a ton of features on their own as Rogue Base is brimming with abilities. All Rogues also have huge gaps in time for the sub class abilities. Rogues only get new abilities at 3rd, 9th, 13th, and 17th levels. Since most campaigns only get up to lvl 12 or so.... you wouldn't see that 13th level ability in plenty of campaigns, and in just a handful. A Ranger is 3rd, 7th, 11th, and 15th. So most rangers would get 3 of their class actions. Rogue is just backloaded on their abilities universally. And no other class has as large of a gap between their 1st and 2nd abilities 3 > 9. Only Cleric has a larger gap between any abilities and that's 8>17, while Cleric is front loaded with tons of other stuff. Thus I think when looking at the whole of Rogue Subclasses internally, the practicality of their early abilities is important, but the best features not being available till later is generally not as strong an argument on Rogue. The ability to spread Sneak Attack damage is a bit stronger and more useful early on. When you look at an Assassin, who also modifies Sneak Attack with their early ability, their next 2 abilities are a let down. When looking at Rogue sub classes, you kind of have to think of them all in terms of a high level campaign. But I think the feature you get early on are things you're gonna make a lot of use out of. And Kelly makes a strong point when he's saying Boss Battles don't make up that much of what you actually do in D&D, and more specifically... Single Monster encounters don't make up that much, as even bosses have some smaller creatures with them.
@heyfell43013 жыл бұрын
The ability to spread damage will always be underestimated for a good reason: it always seems better when you're dealing high numbers on the target, but you don't realise as often how much D&d is based on Action Economy, and the importance of having ways to take away the largest amount of targets as fast as possible. That's why i didn't like Fireball when i first started on D&d, like: "everyone says this is overpowered, but the fighter still does at least half the amount of damage than this shit, every single turn", without realizing the amount of enemies i was blowing up with one use of that. A problem that i often face when DMing a boss battle is how much the players ignore the minions, just for them to surround the party and start stabbing them to death. The ability to take out a minion on a single hit, and still transfer some damage for the boss is great for a midigator, because while the Fighter or the Barbarian have an insane damage, the Rogue is way more consistent, and being able to cause a bit of an AoE is amazing for this purpose. They can focus on the tiny annoying minions, while dealing that sweet damage to the boss. I think the only problem with the Phantom is that, by releasing it along with the Soulknife, it lost the attention it deserves, because it's obvious what's the better subclass here. I dunno, i feel like it would be a more fair competition if the tokens were available at level 3, in this case the only thing the level 9 ability would give is the Wails From the Grave bonus uses, that would make the subclass feel way more unique and creepy early on.
@Apfeljunge6663 жыл бұрын

With PCs it could be awkward given how it written it implys the soul is bound to the trinket till the phantom breaks it. Don't forget that rogues get Reliable Talent at 11th level. I know, still higher level, but as a complete package with the Phantom subclass that can be a gamechanger. The ability to roll a minimum 10 on a deception, investigation, insight, etc even though that isn't your thing can unlock a lot of new things for the rogue I also want to mention, these videos have felt a little more like ranking the subclasses linearly, rather than in a tier list. A tier-list is fluid and each item can be ignorant of its siblings, because they don't detract from the tier it's been placed in. However, the constant comparison to the Arcane Trickster makes these rankings feel a little more like we're looking for "What's better than the AT?", rather than "How do each of these subclasses augment and accent the Rogue class's overall strengths?" I still enjoyed the series, and the other classes as well. But I kinda wish everything wasn't compared to the AT, since the fact that that's S (maybe SS) in your ranking shouldn't impact the idea that the Soulknife is also S, for example.

Phantom rogue increases their damage output by near 50%. It adds aoe, and it's guaranteed so you can hit the ac tank, or force a conc save on a spellcaster. Or it let's you finish off the low HP enemy without having to blue your one and only attack on it. It also adds some AOE to rogue which is kind of unheard of. The proficiency ability is also pretty good, it let's you get proficiency in nature or survival to gather herbs and such, and then an hour later change the proficiency to a healer's/alchemists kit to turn said herbs into potions. Just having access to any tool, on demand is amazing (especially since tools are something you'll know your going to use/need in advanced so you can prepare it when necessary)

I don't think it actually captures their full soul when a Soul trinket is formed due to the following phrase: "a sliver of its life essence that takes physical form". Typically, a soul isn't really referred to as "a sliver of essence", but rather the entire essence enchilada.
@catherineholt11493 жыл бұрын
It also says the soul is desperate to leave so of it was just an essence of the soul the rest of the soul should have already moved on....this is why its vague in its wording it's not clear if the sliver is just used to make the trinket or if it also binds the rest of the soul along with it

Treantmonk mentioned Phantom coming online at 6, and I agree. This subclass is a monster. Unavoidable half damage from your alpha strike... it's amazing. It's EASY to get sneak attack, most other classes give you unique ways to use it in a different way, but if you know what you're doing; you'll always get it. And being a rogue it is easy to get in range to get your trinket (at six) and bounce out... putting this next to mastermind... upsetting.

11:00 Any rogue can take green flame blade or booming blade. The cantrips can easily be acquired via racial features or feats. There aren’t many ways for a rogue to deal with multiple enemies at once while also using their sneak attack effectively. There also aren’t many ways to further increase a rogues attack beyond the blade cantrips, and wails stacks with these features. Wails from the grave also has the advantage of allowing for the phantom to maintain distance between themselves and the target without having to move within melee range. You also seem to be discounting the availability of the new steady aim feature a bit which drastically increases the likelihood any rogue will get their sneak attack.

The Phantom feels like an A. A low A, but an A. The cry of the grave feature hits the second target without a save. A high AC enemy with a minion just has a new weak point. This might not be the strongest, but its guaranteed damage matters. The soul blade... is an S. There's no way it isn't. All the options it has can't be countered, unlike the arcane trickster, and you have a free usage once per long rest. And the swashbuckler has the same free usage flexibility, which made it S too. All in all, Tasha's was solid for rogues. Unlike some other classes, it didn't raise the bar, but matched the subclasses perfectly.

WOTC really took the Mystic class and made entire subclasses based off of the abilities it got.
@RealMiniLink3 жыл бұрын
I thought the main reason why the mystic was broken was because it had subclasses to do anything the other classes could do but better
@asherandai10003 жыл бұрын
@@RealMiniLink There were several reasons that were commonly cited. One was the ability to be proficient in any skill. Another was the mid-level power of the mystic, which was exceptionally high... although it didn't grow really after that. Then there were smaller less common reasons people gave, like the high AC it could get, the high speed it could move, or the multiple concentration thing. The "can do anything other classes can do but better" thing didn't last long for a couple of reason. Firstly, it's not the only class that could fill every role. Secondly, it didn't hold up under any scrutiny. It was simply a false conception. The cleric out healed it by a million miles, the wizard out magicked it, the paladin out nova-ed it, and the barbarian out tanked it. It was a better allrounder then most classes, but it didn't outperform the most specialised classes. The bard also outperformed it at being an allrounder. Overall, the Mystic was broken in terms of power, but only at mid level, and only in "low combat" adventuring days because it ran out of steam very quickly if it tried to perform other classes (for example it's super powerful nova attacks could only be used 3 times in an entire day, and they were wasted if it missed unlike the paladins nova). But that's what counted for most people since that's how most people play and the level most people play at.

I have an idea on how to improve the Assassin subclass and would like your opinion: 1) Combine the two Social Abilities 2) Where the second social ability was, replace with the following: Flash Bomb: Once per short rest you can craft Flash bombs equal to your proficiency bonus minus one. You can only have a number of Flash Bombs equal to your proficiency bonus minus one. During combat, as a bonus action, you can throw one Flash Bomb at an enemy. The enemy makes a constitution saving throw (DC 8 + Dexterity Mod + Proficiency Mod). On an failed save a creature becomes blind for a turn and is susceptible to the Assassinate Ability.
@StateBlaze19893 жыл бұрын
While I also agree with the interpretation that the Phantom's spil trinkets are souls you trapped, that is somewhat called into question with its level 13 ability that just gives you a soul trinket if you don't have one after a long rest. Where did that soul trinket come from? If it functions like the ones the subclass makes, how was that soul trapped and when? Is the soul inside related to the rogue at all? Does it have to be someone the rogue killed at any point beforehand?

@@savokgrim4131 Here's a little sneak peak. This is a draft of my revision of the Thief rogue's Second-Story Work feature: [Second-Story Work] When you choose this archetype at 3rd level, you gain a climbing speed equal to your walking speed, falling from a height of 100 feet or less does not cause you to fall prone, and you use your Dexterity score instead of your Strength score to determine your allowed jump distance. You also gain two abilities that allow you to take advantage of having the high ground over your enemies: -- Rooftop Sniper When you make a ranged weapon attack against a creature that is at least 10 feet below you, you gain a +2 bonus to your attack and damage rolls. -- Death from Above After you jump down from a height between 100-10 feet and land next to a creature, roll your fall damage but do not apply it to yourself yet. If you immediately make a melee weapon attack and hit a creature you landed next to, that creature takes the fall damage you rolled instead of you. If the attack misses, you take half the fall damage you rolled. If you do not immediately make an attack after falling, you take the full amount of fall damage.

I've been playing a Phantom for a few months now. I began the character over a year ago taking Arcane Trickster as my subclass and mixing in a few levels of Wild Magic Sorcery. I never really felt in the skin of that character for some reason and wanted to have him die so I could come to the table with something more to my liking. My DM was very against having the personality and character of my PC be lost to the story. He, instead, wove a transformation of the character's class into the story. I kept the multi-class idea by going 3 levels of Archfey Warlock and 4 levels of Phantom. The ability to change out a proficiency in a skill or tool set, I've found, is very useful. I will usually take Survival or Medicine when we are travelling and switch it for a social skill when we get into town. I especially like the offset it affords me when I have a skill with a -1 mod due to a low score. I haven't had a ton of chances to use the Wails From the Grave ability because we've not been in those tactical positions with multiple targets, and I think that's because my DM is brilliant at making combat a challenge. But when I do, I use Green Flame Blade cantrip, attack with sneak, and wail on them. Thanks for making the videos, gentleman. I really appreciate your discourse.

Currently playing a Phantom Rogue in a Curse of Strahd campaign. I agree that it comes online late, so I decided to take feats to make up for it. I took telekinetic and shadow touched. I flavored Mage Hand as ghost friends grabbing things, etc. Invisibility and Disguise Self are also just super useful and easy to add that spectral flavor too (kill people and take their faces with Disguise Self for instance). Also, my DM gave me a pretty cool magic item that essentially gives me the Arcane Trickster Mage Hand Legerdemain feature adding to my feat choice, as well as access to some other spells (unseen servant for instance) that further add to the ghost theme. Wails from the Grave has helped finish off enemies all the time, a lot more than I expected tbh. I also just love the extra skill. We're just a four man party and being able to switch around based on what we need atm has actually come in handy. I just think its a fun and flavorful subclass that fits really well in certain campaigns.

One thing that strikes me about Phantom: it's a Rogue subclass that *actually* increases potential damage, and does at level 3. Most don't, and if they do, it's at high level. For as good as Swashbuckler and Soul Knife are, they don't actually do "more" potential damage than any other rogue. Swashbucker has easier Sneak Attacks, but doesn't hit harder. Soul Knife does the same damage as any other Rogue with feat-boosted bonus action attacks (Crossbow Expert or Fighting Initiate for Two Weapon Fighting), if you're rolling hits. Thief and Scout get true extra attacks, but don't get them until 17th level. Phantom does more total damage under the best case than other folks. Now, that's not to say that Phantom is S-Tier. It just has high potential damage. Where the subclass seems like it falls apart is utility. One proficiency is really cool, but Rogues have lots of proficiencies already. Death Saving Throws are nice, but hopefully it won't come up too often. Questions isn't that impressive since it can be lies (but could be handy to ask questions of allies that died). Ghost walk is sweet. But the overall utility is a lot lower than Arcane Trickster, Scout, Swashbuckler, Soul Knife. I mean, SK's Psi-Boosted Knack basically means proficiency in everything, and it stacks with what you already know. Add in telepathy and teleportation and invisibility... The utility just blows the Phantom out of the water.
@willwalsh75913 жыл бұрын
Soul knife basically gives the two weapon fighting style. The bonus action attack uses modifier, unlike base twf. So an average of 1d4+mod instead of 1d6. So basically an increase of mod-1

Soulknife, imo, helps to make one of the most powerful rule-breaking classes. @Alaberti Green Flame Blade is really something that most Rogues won't even think about thanks to the Booming Blade. They have very limited cantrips, so expending it just so they can have AoE is just not as good. For Acid Splash and Create Bonfire, just remember: intelligence is probably a tertiary attribute for Rogues, do attack rolls and saving throws are not as good as guaranteed damage.
@heyfell43013 жыл бұрын
@Alaberti a good AoE that's consistent and scales with level is a pretty big deal, if you ask me. You're using the Arcane Trickster as a comparison, but just invisible Mage Hand already beats the AoE of the Phantom, that shit is overpower. The Phantom will never get to S tier, but when compared to the Scout, yes, i really thinks AoE is better than reactive movement. If compared to an S tier, Wails from the Grave isn't that big of a deal, but when compared to the A tier, it's really powerful.

The mechanical ripple effect that the steady aim feature has can drastically change combat in various situations. These impacts are different for a large portion of the rogue subclasses.

Since I usually go first in combat, steady aim happens every combat.......throw a dagger....oh look....sneak attack.....oh look.....another enemy takes 3d6 necrotic....sweet.....I love the phantom thematically and utility wise....I would prolly lean towards low s, high a...in the right circumstances...

Loving the Soulknife Rogue! I'm playing a ranged Air Genasi Soulknife and having the ability to levitate on top of everything just makes it soo much fun!! Also the fact that you can throw you soul blade and not have to go pick them up is just a nice quality of life buff over normally throwing daggers and having to pick them up after :) absolute S tier

That's a great combo! I've been using an Eladrin Soulknife. Misty step w/ added buffs to the ability depending on the season, and a shorter long rest making for faster recharges of psionics. Also threw in the Sharpshooter and telekinesis feats to improve the ranged game.
