Complete coverage of the Steinstossen Stone Throw, Event 4 from the 2023 Arnold Strongman Classic in Columbus, Ohio (March 4, 2023). Inspired by a traditional strength challenge in Switzerland, this challenge gives each competitor three attempts to throw the eponymous heavy stone for distance.
Mitchell Hooper continues his consistent performance in this one, but a determined Mateusz Kieliszkowski also makes it a much tighter battle heading into the fifth and final event of the competition.

I think there should always be one unusual event at the Arnolds, like the year they did the trial by stone thing or even the max squat was a little different. It makes it exciting for us when we have no idea who’s going to do well and also shows the ability of the athletes to adapt to something they have never done

I like the idea of the event, but I can see why it's getting a mixed reception. It's impressive when you consider the weight of the stone, but the throws just look kind of weak because of that. Strongman needs a good balance of difficult and spectacular; Truck Pulls, the wheel of pain, circus barbell stuff, car yokes. This IS a good idea for an event, I just think the execution and the presentation need tweaks.

Finally, height doesn't matter as much as the athlete's power and ability to make use of his speed. The distance is proportional to the speed imparted to the stone, and to the square root of the height from which it is thrown. So, at equal initial speed, throwing from a height of 2 meters gives 5% more distance than throwing from a height of 1.8 meters(sorry, I can't think in feet and inches!).

@@bryancampbell4604 nobody can keep their hands on such a stone while pulling it, you need to push, as it's the only way to impart significant force to the stone, especially due to its size. You could throw far with a small stone that is small and wieldy, and "grippy" enough to pull on, and not too heavy, since balancing it on your arms is a much more direct, and less local, demanding, way of force transfer, compared to keeping a stone from sliding out your hands. As you can push on a wall several times harder via your arms, than what you pull with, with bent hand hooks, and gripping the stone is not an issue with it balanced above your head, it is the best way. Especially after you gain free speed via the run-up, which is better than standing still, because you can jump into it, use the stretch reflex of your legs and up, with mostly arms straight, then pressing into your arms a bit to not lose tension during, at a shallow angle, where you can match the ongoing acceleration your legs give you, and where the arms can impart the most extra velocity with the fastest shallow shove, at an already moving stone. This way you push it away faster than you could do with pressing it off, where your shoulders and arms cannot compete with your lower body, and significant leg drive would make the stone remain stuck on your collar bone.( I should presume you know most of it, bar the first sentence, oh well, being thorough.).
