Its taken me a while to get the GT-100 with delays from the manufacturer and other stuff... but at last I have one and have carried out an extensive three day review both in this video and an even longer one on my website www.tonymckenzie.com/roland-gt...
We cast our eyes over this unit as its bound to be a big seller. But is it really as good as Roland Boss make out? and what are the best or worst features of the unit.
From the beginning to 29 minutes we examine inside and out, then from 29 minutes there are audio samples and lastly the summing up by me.
Visit www.tonymckenzie.com for over 50 reviews of music equipment from A to Z with an unbiased opinion and excluding hype!

I am a vollenteer firefighter and got badly Injured in the worst firestorm that Australia had ever seen,hence why they are called back Saturday. I had to give up my job as a nurse. I spent 2 years in rehab and I still have frequent visits to hospital. Long story short, music has been my salvation and my music therapist got me going again. Then in 2015 December my studio got broken into while I was in hospital. The barsteteds took everything and shit on my kids first paintings they did for me. Roland Boss, came to my rescue and gave me a boss got-100 and a jc-120 amp. Thank you for giving me a a second chance. I will be buying a lot more of their products from now on. Its great gear, it sounds good, and it's built to last, it even handles getting run over by my wheelchair. Thank you all at Roland, Boss you saved my life again. Mark B. Kilmore Australia.

You are the reason Google is changing the way we post comments. Negative and unnecessary comments like yours. There are so many reviews on this device on the net showing you the sounds. This video is excellent, he covers so many aspects of this device, quite a brilliant video and called for, he took the time to help others. Roland should pay him! Some people need this info and I believe his video is for intelligent people, unlike yourself. I thank Tony for this video, it is highly useful.

Thanks so much for this,Tony! Really appreciate your time, logical approach and thoughtful editing. Also, thanks for recording in hi-res so that you can actually read the copy on the GT-100 -- nice. Great relaxed screen presence as well. You make tracking the info a pleasure. Great heads-up on the driver! That alone is worth the price of admission. Oh, yeah you do it for free. Awesome! Hi Paul... I do have a lot of people that watch my video reviews... and I can tell you that sometimes when I'm over there and go in music stores people have been known to walk over and say things like 'Hey Tony, I bought my ***** because of you' and it's a weird feeling. I'm actually far better known in the USA than here in England :) It's great to know you like this stuff! I have a few reviews coming up presently... (I often wait for new gear that is sometimes out there but late here) a Hughes and Kettner Triamp Mark III Inside and Out review (a long one!), a Klon KTR Overdrive and I'll be comparing that with the Klon Centaur as well as its an inside and out review too, a Boss 'waza' overdrive pedal, a Boss MS-3 effects switcher (which has sounds in it too) and a pedal that extends sustain at any volume.. there is also a video of what will be the very best guitar I am making presently and likely that I won't be able to better that one - it really is something special and I'm looking forward to that (again waiting for parts). So I guess when those hit down there will be some nice new videos from me to watch and some of them are really cool. Thanks for those kind words and of course for watching.

No worries. I found out from another person who owns a Boss GT100. You have the following blocks: distortion, chorus, compression, delay, reverb, EQ, accel, pedal, dual amps and 2 general FX slots. The general FX slots can be loaded with the effect you choose and the blocks can be arranged in any order. Hope this helps someone else with the same question.

Thanx for the great review Tony, I just got the GT-100 after selling off a lot of analog pedals that were cluttering up my pedalboard. I really like the ctrl pedal for the feedbacker option. Also it runs great in stereo. I enjoyed your review very much. Could you maybe delve into the four wire connection option on the GT-100 in a future video? Thanx again I'm eagerly waiting for your future reviews. CHEERS!

Hi Tony! How do you get the GT100 wah to work well in the amps FX loop? This is how I'd like to use the GT100 - primarily as a MIDI controller using amps tone but use GT100 Volume pedal and wah in loop - no pre amp or modeling. Guitar->amp input amp send->GT100 input GT100 output->amp return Hope you can help! Thank you. Regards, Tony

Good day Tony I just watched your review on the boss gt-100. One thing that surprised me was how little there was two it inside. I do have to say it sounded great and I came very close to getting one. But I got the me-70 by BOSS and I'm very happy with it one thing I like is the knobs just like on your guitar amp. The Boss ME 70 has 36 user and 36 presets patches. I'm very new at using a multiple guitar effects pedal but today I wrote my first user bank. I have a lot to learn thank you. Freddy

Hi Tony, is it posible to record a loop and send that loop only to one channel (A), and play along on channel B? So that the two channels clearly saperated, Left (or right) the looper, and on the other side your now live playing. Is that posible? IF NOT, is it posible on the Line 6 HD 500(x) Floorboard, maybe you know that!?

Good review Tony, brought one yesterday after hearing good things about the Ver 2.03 updated software package. The Program section now contains new sounds which are 100 times better than the original loaded sounds from a few years ago, the original sounds were just not there in regards to warmth or tone, very digital and cold. The effort into the ver 2.03 packet has made this unit more useable in my opinion. The Pre Amp models still need tweaking, hopefully next revision will bring these up to speed and quality.

Hi Tony, thanks for the review very helpful! Got a couple of questions if you wouldn't mind answering? 1. With the phrase loop can you make a phrase with a clean patch and then switch to a dirty patch to jam over your looped phrase? 2. Will using the 4 cable method through the effects loop allow you to place your amps preamp in the effects chain then effectively switch your amp channels on and off without having to use your amps external channel switch? So you could have your dirty setting in one patch using the amp overdrive and then switch to another patch which is set to clean? thanks
@tonymckenziecom
@tonymckenziecom 10 жыл бұрын
The 'phrase' becomes a data file so the answer is, once its recorded you can play any other sound over the backing loop). I did not try the 4 cable thing... but it could work on the GT-100 but I think not on the GR-55 (which was a let down really). Download the manual from Roland because there's lots of info in there... and that's a good way to see most features BEFORE you buy one - and that's got to be a good idea ;-) Thanks for watching.

How are the modulations, like delay and chorus. I'm not looking for world class effects just something to use at gigs. I prefer my amps (Mesa lonestar) drive and was planning on using the 4 cable method. I would also like a little boost to push the lonestar over the edge when heavier distortion is needed. Can the gt100 do that and the modulation without taking away from the natural sound of the amp, like I said I'm looking for good not perfect, I can use high quality stomps in the studio but for a gig I'm looking for something cheaper but effective... Thanks, love your channel for straight forward reviews...
@tonymckenziecom
@tonymckenziecom 7 жыл бұрын
Modulations are fine for gigs in my opinion and enough to work with. Lonestar is a pretty nice amp. All pedals will detract a little from that great Mesa tone, but I would say it is acceptable stuff on this pedal... obviously careful setup for the exact needs rather than just some pre-set. Typically I ALWAYS use pre-sets in the reviews to show how it all sounds out of the box... from there on things can only get better :). If you are just using the effects rather than the simulated amps I would also check out the GT-1 which has 'similar' effects in there... but be aware on the GT-1 that banks as we know them (and are on the GT-100) don't exist in the same way on the GT-1... but at half the price it is a consideration... I reviewed that unit here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nZ-5qIGipbqIitU and I hope that also helps a little. Thanks for watching and great to know you like the stuff.

Hello :) Great demo! It looks very empty inside compare with my Vox Tonelab LE. LOL :) What I miss in all the demos of those boards are a test how sensitive you can play with certain effects. For example, what I like about my Tonelab is the possibility to play soft and you get almost clean sound and then hard and the overdrive (if used) comes in. Maybe it has something to do with the tubes in the Tonelab? What I miss about the Tonelab is more effects. But I'm afraid to change because I don't want to loose the sensitivity the Tonelab have. If you know what I mean. (sorry for my bad English)

Yes it can be a bit of an eye opener when you see inside the GT-100 LOL. The GT-001 (I recently reviewed) looked as though there was even less in there. @tonymckenziecom
@tonymckenziecom 10 жыл бұрын
Well I checked both of them out. I found the HD500 (not the X) to be harder to use than the GT-100, the HD500 they said was 'HD' I never heard that either, it was like so many of the other line 6 I had owned. The GT-100 sounded better, was easier to use, cost less and overall beat the hell out of the HD500. I stress that this was not the X version so things might have changed, but don't listen for HD as it in my opinion was a great marketing tool.

Tony, I've been looking at starting my effects from scratch as I've hit a brick wall. I find separate pedals too much of a pain because if you tweak a knob it sounds different each time you put it on. I find multi effects too complex now especially with all the amp modelling things on them. I have been looking at the GT100 though and also the TC Electronic G system. There is quite a difference in price but, my question is, is there a big difference in the quality of the effects? Or, would you take a different route? I am working with a limited budget of around a grand.
@tonymckenziecom
@tonymckenziecom 10 жыл бұрын
Hi, I have owned and used both. The G system has good effects, but is a complete nightmare to get working properly. The manual is awful. (I review the G-System on my website www.tonymckenzie.com ). The unit hates ground loops which I only ever solved with the 4 cable method AND an isolator - a real pain. I would not buy that unit again. The GT-100 was simple to use - first advantage. The maul was nigh on perfect - second advantage. The 'amp sims' can be turned off which makes (to me) a floor pedal with good effects. The effects are NOT rubbish but tech specs point to better on the G-System. However, the GT-100 has price, better everything else and it works very well so that gets my top score of the two. Honestly, be careful about the G-System... I would try one for sure if you are seriously going to consider buying one - that way you can change your mind before you own it.

Hi Tony, thanks for the great review. I own one of these units and quite frankly it’s a love hate relationship. I initially purchased it so that I could go direct to the PA without an amp to simplify my rig. The challenge I have is that the heavier overdrive pedals sound very thin and harsh. I really struggle to get a good thick overdrive for hard rock songs. I use to clean fender amp models for my preamp’s and hit them with overdrive pedals. I have found that running this unit via the four cable method through my Blackstar amplifier sounds the best. This way I’m able to use the Blackstar’s distortion and the effects from the boss. Although I am still not very happy with this unit. I’ve been thinking of purchasing the line 6 helix LT. Any thoughts on that unit?
@tonymckenziecom
@tonymckenziecom 6 жыл бұрын
The GT-100 is not perfect for sure, but for the price its not really bad. And as for the overdrives and distortions on all of this exact type of pedals from other makers as well these are not perfect... but rather passable on occasion. The Helix LT is interesting insomuch as its really an Helix. But wait... there is the new GT-1000 to consider which is built on different technology... I have a review coming up as soon as it arrives (currently on order). Good points re 4 cable method and thanks for watching.

Hi Mark, I don't have a MK III Triamp. I have used earlier versions off and on so to speak. It's a pretty cool amp for sure, but the singular comment I would make is that in my experience they are more 'toppy' than most other amps I regularly use. Think even Grandmeister which is also 'toppy'. You can dial it out of course. The Triamp is a very flexible amp indeed and is of the highest quality too. Of course you might disagree with me :) as the sounds are all very subjective in reality. Tell me what you think! It would be nice to hear from a current user of the Triamp for sure.

Excellent stuff. I put my GT-100 through a Marshall combo, and am never sure what I should set the bass, mid, treble and presence controls to. I find the GT-100 imparts a slight digital 'fizziness' to the straight through the Marshall sound. What would you recommend Tony? Thanks!
@tonymckenziecom
@tonymckenziecom 9 жыл бұрын
Marmaduke Winterbotham Personally I would be setting the eq's on the GT at flat (12 o clock) and set the tone on the amp... The GT-100 sounds quite good though for the cost and I do reckon it remains one of the 'better' units of its type around. Sometimes (depending on the amp) I have also used an EQ in the loop to liven things a little. Hope it helps, but sounds are subjective and you might like them different :)

Of the two you mention I found the GT-100 to be nicer in general. Nice sounds too. Thoroughbred.. now there's a word! Indeed I used to go to Thoroughbred music on Hillsborough nr Tampa and I always remember seeing Les Pauls there that there was zero chance of getting in the UK at the time. They had some really great gear. I visited another store if I remember also near the Tampa football grounds (or arena) which were also pretty cool. Later if I remember they were bought out by MARS (remember them?) and even later bought by either Sam Ash or GC. Back in the early 90's Thoroughbred was the place to go for Gibson's but alas they went bust (I think). Ha I still have a handful of those stickers in a drawer here from one time they had the local rock radio show at the store and were giving away that sort of stuff. Because I come form the UK I did not go every day :) Well spotted.

I have a Boss GT-8 today and have a feeling that the GT-100 is much the same system with an improved "GUI"/user interface (...and lower production costs) - I already have more "drive sounds" than I will Ever need in my Boss GT-8... I was hoping the Novasystem perhaps had more "usable" sounds straight out of the box - but No?
@tonymckenziecom
@tonymckenziecom 10 жыл бұрын
Olav Isak Sjoflot Ive had a GT-8 too, and there are still some advantages with the GT-100 over the GT-8... the sounds to my ears are better and the interface is really much better for sure - you picked up on that and you are right for sure. But the sounds are based on newer 'cosm' stuff they said. I agree it probably cost less than the GT-8 to make though.

Thanks for you straight up reviews... I have found this and the pod hd reviews very helpful. Its very hard to find side by side shootouts of these type of products...like guitars and amps side by side is when the rubber meets the road...maybe this could be some thing you could consider . Thanks, Paul.

Hello, great video! I have just one question...let's say that I have connected: guitar - boss gt100-amplifier (Engl Screamer). And I use some delay or chorus for 50seconds in the song, and then I'd like to play my Engl Screamer distortion (from the amp). Is there any bypass button or something like that on Boss gt100? :)

Good overall review of this pedal Tony (and quite amusing to boot)! I've had my eye on this floor pedal, the Line6 HD500X floor pedal, and the extremely overpriced Fractal Axe FX2 rack unit (yah I know that's really not comparable to the GT100 or HD500X). I really like most of the tones I'm hearing from the GT100 although I haven't heard anyone produce (or even attempt to produce) a good SRV/Texas blues type tone with the GT100. Wonder if it's in there? I've had a Rocktron Voodu Valve rack processor for years and the one tone it can't do is the Texas blues tone. Seems to be the tricky one for any of these multi processors to produce. But the cleans, crunch and high gain tones + the Boss fx sound good to me. One of the things I don't like about the GT100 is the layout. I know you can go into stomp box mode to toggle fx on and off. But I'd prefer to be able to toggle fx on and off while I'm in patch mode. The Accel pedal lets you do that for one effect. But say you want to turn on a chorus and a delay...can't do that while in patch mode right? That's one of the nice things about the HD500X...the footprint. You can toggle fx on/off while in patch mode. However, I think the GT100 might be the better/easier unit to get up and running with and the tones might be better too. I tried the HD500X at Guitar Center a few months back and I was horrified by the factory preset tones. Sounded like garbage to me. Was not at all impressed. Also, the display screen on the HD500X is not nearly as nice as the dual screens on the GT100. If the footprint on the GT100 was more like the footprint on the HD500X, where you could toggle 2 or 3 different fx on/off...........I'd buy the GT100 today. Still thinking about it. Til then I'll use my trusty pedal board full of stomp boxes. Thanks for the review. Very informative and well done. Plus I got to chuckle a few times! A little silly-ness is never a bad thing! Dan

I also reviewed the HD500 on video on my channel in the same way as this, and on my website www.tonymckenzie.com you should check those out. If you're considering an Axe FX then consider a Kemper amp as they are half the price and are frankly amazing - I own one of those. I think your assumptions of the floorboards are correct (I could be wrong on the odd one as I did this review some while ago and have since sold both the HD500 and the GT-100). Thanks for watching BTW it's appreciated and without guys who like the reviews my channel and website would be nothing ;-)

That review is here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qoi9lZyOirqnsLc - I was a little hard on the HD-500 at the time... my apologies for that, but I really did think that the GT-100 was better all around for that type of gear. TOny, you're actually wrong on the USB aduio interface - the GT-10 has built in usb audio just as the GT-100. You're correct about the GT-8, which doesn't have usb audio interface built into it.

Hi Tony - really great review. I use a GT-8 now thru a Mesa Dual Rec and get some amazing tones but really like the flexability the GT-100 seems to offer. The one thing I want to get to work is how or rather can you bypass the unit entirely at times to use other pedals? How would that path work in a live situation. I would like to use the GT-100 along with say 5 MXR pedals and at times just bypass the GT all together and just use the pedals. Again this is another great review!

It will switch my Mesa/Boogie Mark V :) Since the clean channel (Ch.1) is default, just plug the amp control into Ch.2 or 3 to switch between the two. If you feel like getting an A/B/Y box, you could switch all 3 channels... But then you'd have to keep track of the on/off states and the A/B/Y position. Just another option. Nice vid!

A question for you, ive been looking for an uprade on my Pod xt live, id been watching at the Demos for the Hd500 and im not to impressed, would you recommend the Gt-100 better. Im looking for better amp emulations and dinamics. Of course none of them will sound as organic as the fractal but I dont have the money. My best regards from Chile,Samerica.

Hey Tony, great review. I have a question, not sure if you have already answered. Can you demo moving/changing patches? When changing patches say you're in bank 1 patch 5 and want to go to bank 3 patch 5 does the unit change through all the patches as you page through them or you can activate bank 3 patch 5 at will? My old ART ECC from 94 (ancient) has to go through every bank, for instance i'm on bank 1 patch 5 and as I go up to bank 3 it's changing patches as I go up the banks. Very limited.

Thank you, I appreciate the response. I've been all over the place looking for a multi unit, but just can't figure out what I want. I don't really care for amps, I have tube amps for that. But I do need something with MIDI to control the amps channels. This unit looks promising. And I'll stay away from Line 6 ;-). Thanks again.

If so my question is did you have it professionaly set up as the floyd rose bridge on my ibanez jem has constantly been causing me problems since I got it including the bridge becoming too high causing fret buzzing or action being too low, I was just wondering how you use yours without having any problems?

Hi, Tony, thanks for the review. I'm thinking to add a GT10 or GT100. I'm mostly concerned with the sonic qualities and ease of use. DO you think GT100 is at least as good as GT10, to me it seems there are and the tones of GT10 cut through better. Is there a mode where I can use it in stomp box mode?

Very good Tony, so grateful! The connection is important, the 4 cable method to amp has a lot in there, the way you have to place effects in the chain then,, the roll of S/R in the effect chain position, y wish so much people talk about this. What happen when you use 4 cable method and effect chains the s/r position, if we modify presets whhat we do with s/r first we have to acctivate it and then move it where? this info y like to see some where..
