So I just spent the whole week working with the Alesis Strike Editor and they updated the firmware so you can ignore the 200MB kit size limit. I used Lustark SDSE and Reaper and exported all 7 stock kits FULL 24bit from Superior drummer 3. each kit is 1-2.5GB and takes about 15 seconds to load, but you can get the full resolution samples with no cutoff or downsampling. It sounds so so real, absolutely convincing to the highest professional standards. It's really insane, and incomparable to 16bit samples when played side by side. It's really worth knowing that you can do this, you can really ignore the kit size limit and go HAM with anything you want!

Learning to drum after years of wanting to give it a try. I read reviews on reliability and decided to purchase the TD17KVS (step up from the L model in Canada) that I was renting during my drum lessons as I just couldn't see myself using anything else. I feel I made a good purchase for myself and my budget. I didn't want to deal with failing parts and returns etc which would take away from my valuable practice time as a beginner.

I played Roland and Yamaha for 25 years, and finally tried the Alesis Strike when it came out. Within 3 mos, my crash....crashed. and I had to replace my kick soon after, due to a piezo failure. Finally, I upgraded a smaller tom with the exact same model of tom already on the kit, but I could never get it to have the same attack and projection regardless of settings, which suggests either a different quality of piezo, a different internal configuration or inconsistent quality of assembly. Believe me, I have no allegiance to Roland, and some of their entries are pretty uninspired(bland), but I never had a Roland pad failure in two decades across 3 different kits. I finally sold my Strike in favor of a new TD-17KVX and although the sounds are more limited, the overall Roland quality is there, and customizing sounds is a bit more intuitive and direct. However, for the price, Alesis gives you much for your money, and the aesthetics are more 'drumlike' than is the Roland. if Alesis can upgrade their quality on the mid-range kits, I think they can really give Roland a run for its money. Maybe it will be a different story in 5 years. Others have had great results with their Alesis kits, so take my story as anecdotal. It just wasnt for me.

Yeah the SE fixed a lot of the issues with previous models, but unfortunately the Strike and Strike Pro were rushed and tarnished the reputation of the Strike line of kits and even Alesis for many people.

I have the Aleisis Strike kit, and although not that happy with the hithat sound reproduction ( I also bought the extra Tom and crash), I feel its a far better kit than the others, especially the larger drums sizes - this helps me significantly when transitioning between my home studio using the Alesis kit to being able to hit a full accoustic kit with ease when at a venue. The transition between the two is made so much easier due to the Alesis kit's larger drum sizes and also part by the the larger frame setup. I just wish Alesis could reproduce the sounds that the Yamaha can - then it would be a near perfect electronic kit.

I just wanted to say I appreciate all your informative videos. I have a drum set that is a combination of a roland TD 17 KVX and a Drumtec five piece shells. I also have a couple of ATV cymbals and 2 12 in roland toms. The reason I am telling you all this is because I only have the TV 17 module that came with the Roland. I want to order the alesis drum module and combine the two to accommodate extra triggers that I have. The problem is, I didn’t realize when I bought the drum tec Tom‘s , the Drumtec Tom’s are not compatible with alesis modules. I saw a video one time of yours where you combine two different drum modules into one, or at least that’s how I understood it. I also have superior drummer three download it on my laptop. My question is, is there a way to route my drum tech triggers in some fashion to where they could be ran to the alesis module and be recognized. One of the reasons I like the Alesis drum module is you can record yourself easily and it is very user-friendly. I am also a guitar player and I would like to be able to lay down a drum track on the alesis for playback. If I can’t find someway for Mý alesis to recognize the drum tec tom‘s it is probably not the module for me. I was just trying to avoid spending $3000 on a rolland to 50 X. Will a mixing board accomplish this? Once again I would like to say that you are of great credit to the drum community. Keep on rocking!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Cause i'm planning to buy that drum set ( yeah i can't afford the K3X, cause the short amount of money) it's my first time buying e-drum cause 3 years ago i only used acoustic drum set but i sell it cause it's noisy and my house is placed in a crowded neighbourhood. I just wanna spend the good amount of money on the right set so i won't be disappointed.. do you have another recommend ? And yeah i'm planning to make a drum cover and i didn't know how to edit so i have still a lot to learn.. and thank you so much + i'm so sorry for asking too much ( sorry for my english too, it's not my mother tongue ).

Have a look at some fresh sounds for your module, the Roland stock sounds are a bit lame but you can easily improve them for 30 to 40€. The big advantage is that you don't need a PC and you have the native lowest possible latency. And the sounds are great: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iXXElpmua7Kea7c

The Strike Pro costs over AU$3,000 here in Australia. I bought a Crimson II SE for about AU$1,899 almost a year ago & love the feel of the Drum Mesh Heads compared to my Alesis DM-5 Pro I've had for years which has the "Real Head" Drums. Mesh Heads are MUCH quieter to play & have much nicer bounce for double-stroke drum rolls. However, I do feel the Cymbals, especially the Hi-Hat, leave a lot to be desired. I have heard (read in online Forums) that you can upgrade the Hats to the Yamaha 1's that are better to use with the Alesis kits - are you able to confirm this for us please? As in, if I were to buy Yamaha Hats to put on a Pearl Hi Hat Stand (I have both a Pearl & a Dolphin Acoustic Kits also, so...) as opposed to upgrading to the Alesis X-Hats & stand, would it be a more accurate to the real thing setup? I like that the Yamaha Cymbals are larger & all Triple Zone, though, are all 3 Zones well-placed & work well? I have found with my Alesis Crimson Ride, which is Triple Zone, the Bell can be very finicky - it either works as a Bell when struck, or not, & I as often as not, am likely to get the Ride Bow sound instead. Quite annoying, I must say. Especially for an almost AU$2K outlay. 2 Grand ain't cheap for an unemployed person trying to setup their own Home Studio. 😂 I use Toontrack EZD2 with their MetalHeads expansion for my sounds, & go through my Steinberg UR44 Interface using a 5-Pin MIDI Cable as I want to keep my remaining PC USB Ports available, & my UR44 doesn't have USB MIDI In, only 5-Pin In & Out/Thru. LOL It all still works just fine though, so... I use Reaper as my DAW of choice also. Great DAW for the low price, I must say. I am very impressed with Reaper. Thanks for the 😎 e-kit videos mate.

Quick question for you as I can't seem to find that comparison anywhere. I play mostly rock, prog and some metal (think Rush, Dream Theater, Iron Maiden), and I have played actively for 15 years, and on and off for another 8 on top of that due to housing constraints. Up here in Canada, I can get a brand new Strike Pro or a TD-20 for the same price (most of the ones I see don't have the expansion board). What would be your take on that, especially as far as sounds go, machine-gunning and overall hi-hat feel? I played a TD-50 next to the Alesis and obviously the latter was no match. So far, the biggest thing for the TD-20 is cosm modelling and vexpressions, but the Alesis is over a decade newer. Last time I played a Roland from that era was my TD-12 back in 2012. Cheers!

Great review. I'm not a drummer, but I'm going to be getting into an e-drum kit next month (I'm eyeing the TD 17-KVX)...but it was great seeing what else is available. You made me check out the Alesis models (I really don't know much about e-drums though). What I'm thinking of doing is buying the TD 17-KVX, but then start saving up for the TD 50X drum module to upgrade. I'm also eyeing a 12" tom as an "add-on"...and a double-kick pedal for the base.

I went with the Alesis Strike(coming next Thursday). First off, I'm a bass player but it's my band and I get what I want. The drum module alone on the Alesis kit sold me for the ability to run each output of the kit into our digital mixer so we have ultimate control of our mix. 1800 sounds? Jesus, how many do you need? The large size of the snare appealed to our drummer. I've heard this kit played 20 times and I think we'll be able to get by with the sounds even though drum aficionados aren't enthralled. We can always add a crash or the Roland hi hat if the Alesis one is really that bad. I love the look of the kit for putting it on stage though we may adapt a 23 inch red sparkle kick for performances.Justin, you are a treasure man. Thanks for all the info.

Got a TD17kvx here (from Ebay for just £950 a year back) and no complaints, great kit for the price vs what we used to get in that price band! (use it with Superior Drummer 3 rooms of Hansa for sounds). Build quality, trigger quality, reliability and response are more important to me than 'built in sounds' or even 'fake acoustic set' looks. You can easily switch on a (used) 12" snare pad for the floor tom as you know. The Yammy looks too toy like to me!

I'm torn between getting the td-17kvx now, or saving up a bit longer to get the td-27kv. As a novice drummer, common sense would say just get the td-17, but I sure like the extra features (compressor, 28 track output) of the 27 that I think I'd be able to grow with more down the road. If anyone's tried them both, what do you think? Thank you.

I couldn’t get over how ridiculously small the Yamaha toms were there is no way in hell I consider buying it it looks like a kids toy and far to small for a grown up lol , I play an old Roland td20 with various other brains connected but I do like the Alesis at least it feels somewhat more like a drum kit should and looks nice 👍

Blankets on the walls, if you can buy some specific to sound deadening, even better (look them up on the internet). If that costs too much, the thicker the better, but you can always buy some cheaper moving blankets. You might also try some foam padding, (in sections, not everywhere). I put some in each corner of my room and although it may not have helped make things quieter, it did make the room sound better. This will help deaden some of the echo in your room. About the only thing beyond that is some fake walls or partitions, but that might be going too far. I'm not an expert, just someone who has tried a few things that worked for me. Just Google sound deadening blankets on Google or Amazon and you'll get a bunch of ideas. Good luck.

Hi Justin, Big fan of your 65 drums channel. I recently got a TD 27, which has a USB out port. My question is: do you think it is necessary to purchase a dedicated audio interface to trigger a VST from my TD27? Or is the USB out sufficient to get low latency and good responsiveness? Thank you

Roland used gear is generally a good buy if its not obviously abused. Ive had 2 whole Rolands sets all used parts that worked fine. In fact Ive never bought a brand new Roland anything.

Hello Justin. For me, your comparaison is biased for one main reason : No one can buy the Alesis Strike at this day and since 6 months. If the basic version of thé Strike as to come back, it will probably be with some improvements including the new hit hat and the reinforced pads of the SE.
