This thing is a beast. I just picked one up today. I honestly want to throw my dm5 away now. Kind of a learning curve going from setting on alesis to Roland. This helps a lot.

+Joey Jones There is more features, but its also plug and play if you want it to be. once its set up it works MUCH better than my old DM5 ever did. The battery backup is an amazing feature when playing live as well.

Right on man. I use the RT30K myself. With the TM-2 its so accurate. To be honest even an old Ddrum trigger I had with the TM-2 was very accurate. I can't say enough good things about it. The RT30K is top notch though.

Will I have a issue using the trigger with a emad batter ? Cause there's a ring around the head

Justin nokes just use the smaller ring. for my old ddrum trigger I took an exacto knife and cute out a small part of the plastic ring but it could have gone over top. you should be fine with the Roland trigger. I don't use an emad right now to check

I just got a tm2 so this helped alot.Ive been having a problem when I do doubles every so many hits I keep getting some cowbell sound instead of my kick sample I have downloaded to the module.It don't happen everytime but every few times.I've been having trouble figuring out what the problem is.I guess I'll try to work out some of this stuff and hope it fixes it.

I had this too. lol.. so the channels are stereo. you can have a head and rim trigger on the snare as an example or 2 pads... in the TM2 set them to the same sample... or turn the sensitivity of one all the way off... I just put both channels to the same kick drum and it fixed it for me.

Thanks a lot! I've been planning to buy this ever since it came out together with the rt-30k but until now I hadn't seen anyone utilizing the double stroke technique actually trying this out. I'm sure this will get me started settings-wise once I've bought it. Btw, what mics are you using for your kit? It sounds great! Is it plugged into a mixer or are you using a soundcard-to-pc-type setup?

+Mustis1524 Thanks for the comment. This thing almost worked perfect on default settings when I bought it. The td-20 was pretty good too.. I remember the headaches the DM5 used to give me.. I have a set of CAD pro 7 mics. They were dirt cheap. My skins are also very old (except for snare) It comes down to the tuning of your drums if your recording... I bought a Focusrite Saffire pro 40 mixer which is overkill but I prefer that to a mixer... I use the computer to do my mixing. its basically an 8 port external sound-card .

+Mustis1524 When I mixed it down I put some highpass/lowpass filters on the drums, and added some CLA Drums plugins, they make the drums sound pretty awesome as well. It does a slight bit of eq and compression. I'm pretty awful at mixing/recording drums so it helps. The more videos I make though I'm getting a bit better.

I have a sample loaded to the tm2 it's a wave file of a kick drum that I have used for years. I plug tm2 right into the PA system. at the venues I play they usually provide a different box.

i just bought mine yesterday and the only sample that i liked so far for my bass drum is sample 19 which is heavy metal..its a little clicky sound but i guess i could adjust the sound in the mixer..

ya. if it is sensing the trigger you need to go from one of the R/L outputs to the pa.. have the volume set to zero on both. turn tm2 to max, then slowly turn up pa

Also play with roland rt30k and Roland TM-2 module. My problem is the module plays rim shots every now and then, how can I turn off the ''rim''-hits and only activate the ''head''-hits in my module? The head I use in my drum is Evans EMAD, so could that be part of the problem?

Hey man! I just picked up one of these and I really like it, although I'm having some problems. It sometimes won't turn on right and when I can get it on it will work for a while but will suddenly shut off. It will make a sound like another sample and then the triggers stop coming through the PA. I would assume it's the PA but it does it through the couple I've tried. does this sound like user error, or a manufacture error?

+Tyler Becker What do you mean wont turn on right? is the lcd still lit up? when you hit your kick do you see the numbers flash? those are the first two things to check.. if you hit your drum. and you see the indicator flash on the TM2 your trigger and module are most likely fine. does it happen at home? could you make a video? I don't work for Roland or anything but would be happy to help

I need some help. I am not capable of setting my trigger to copy every single hit I play in my bass drum when I play the double pedal at hight speeds. I tried reducing the treshold, and tuning the head up, but it still not woring as yours.

What kindof trigger? Missed hits can be cause by threshold(turn down), Gain/Sensitivity (turn up), or Retrig cancel (turn down). If it works good even with light hits, but can't capture fast playing the retrig is the time between 2 hits.. I usually have that one set low for playing fast. If it is caused by not hitting hard enough turn sensitivity up and threshold down. But this can cause double triggers if you go too far and have to work on hitting harder.

What kind of cable do you need to send your signal from the module to the DI or PA system ? As i see there is no "main out" jack on the tm2, but a midi - like one. It means you need a midi to jack cable?

Hey, there are a left and right out. I just plug in to one of those... Regular patch cable will work. I send one to the PA system and one to my In Ear rig now... The volume knob will adjust the headphones and the L/R jacks volume at the same time so don't make that mistake and turn down the sound in the PA also if your using headphones :) my new video i show how i have my in ear set up.

I notice you have a video of an Alesis Dm5 module as well as this one... Is this Tm-2 a big upgrade from an Alesis dm5. I am having a hard time running two kick drums with two kick triggers through the dm5.

The TM2 was a night and day upgrade. it works SO much better than the DM5. Make sure you are using 2 separate inputs for your triggers on the Dm5 and deal with each one individually .

Yes, you can install up to 4 triggers on this, or have 4 separate samples with splitters. or get a head and rim trigger and each one has it's own settings.

I don't think so. You need to trigger a sound, That's the whole point of the TM2.

For the setup i had a question, all you need is the trigger itself, the module and a output such as a speaker/monitor or earphones? you do not need a mixer or do you? ( i mean into live as well, like i just bring the trigger and the module, next it's just gonna connect to the mixer and go out to the speakers right?) also i don't remember the specs, can you plug both the speaker and the earphones at the same time to make yourself hear to others and hear it yourself? thank you very much for your help

Drum trigger, plus a cable to go to the module. then either headphones, or a 1/4 inch patch cable to either a powered speaker/pa system. i use the headphones and connect to the pa/mixer at the same time. The TM-2 is the best bang for your buck. it has 2 inputs but can be split into 4 so you could trigger snare as well or get a few trigger pads for samples.

Jakedestroysgods does it work in headphones? make sure that Is working too. have the volume maxed on tm2. I use one of the right or left outputs. usually yhr left mono one. is it flashing when it is triggering

+David McGraw How tight do you have your batter head? i have mine quite tight... I set my sensitivity pretty high so it catches the second stroke, about 17.. and i use the threshold to set the minimum. I have it set about 6.. if you hit harder higher is better to not have double triggers.. retrig i keep at 1 or 2.. the higher it is the less doubletriggers but if you play fast it can cause misses.

if you pull your beaters back further and get your springs tighter it will help. you will lose some speed though... Easiest option is to just trigger the kick.

I have no idea how your drum is tuned , how your pedal is setup. how hard you hit, and even If I did settings are different for everybody. That was the whole point of this video and my other videos to teach HOW to set up your own triggers. Is it double triggering or missing? is your beater double taping. It's not just as easy as copying settings.

I just bought 1 of these to use with the axis ekits on my pedals. I am looking into getting some powered speakers for my jam room, what do you recommend? My setup is going to be axis ekits into TM-2, output to a mackie mixer. For now I am just thinking about pronouncing the bass drums via triggers. I have a buddy who comes over w his guitar and amp so this is just a rehearsal room setting (small room 10x10). Do think something like a a mackie thump 15" would suffice? Should I get a pair of them or maybe just a pair of mackie thump 12"? What do you use for speakers? Thanks!

I have a PA and also a powered speaker. If it's just for kick getting a powered speaker for your mixer would work. You could always get another one later too. Honestly in your jamroom you don't need stereo unless your also going to pump music into it. Or using for vocals and want to pan them left and right. That Mackie thump or Tapco thump would be great. Lots of power and low end. That is pretty much what I use and I run a PA system to power the other speaker but the Thump sounds much better in the low end. That is the exact setup I use at jam and usually just run my kicks to hear over the guitars.. (lately I have added snare and love it too)

It should work. I have not tried the TM1 but as long as you can upload your own samples that is the key. You need a punchy bass drum sample to cut the mix and the stock ones are not usually as good. I think the TM-1 allows this from what I was reading. If you are only triggering a kick I don't see any issue. The TM-2 has a digital display and allows you to save your settings though. It is going to be more accurate. If those knobs get moved when you transport etc. Sometimes a very small adjustment makes a big difference. I'd recommend the TM-2 probibly.

The LED is always on...it sometimes doesn't power up right. like its frozen. Then it will sometimes power on fine and then the triggers stop working like half way through the song. The numbers are are still lighting up when I hit them it's just not coming through the PA. That's the weird thing. thanks for your time!

+Tyler Becker Id try a new SD card or format the one your using if you have one in there. If it cant read the card or there is errors it could take a long time or freeze on boot trying to read it. . If the numbers are still lighting up its seeing your hits. Are you using your own sample or a built in one? if your SD card is screwed it might not be seeing your sample if your using your own. If your using a stock sound I'd send it back to Roland...

It is my own sample I loaded onto an SD card. You can use any WAV file and you can create samples in VST libraries as well. I often use BFD3 on my EKIT and have some good ones set up in there that I export. The samples included on the TM-2 are also very good. They have some pretty neat percussive stuff, snares, toms, cymbals, bass drums etc.

This module works about 100x Better than my DM5 ever did.. it's accurate, doesn't double trigger, the settings are easier, and the sounds are better. You can also upload your own wav files to trigger. It wouldn't even be a consideration for me.

I use a RT-30H trigger and I can not put 2 sounds in that same trigger, is it possible? I would like to insert sound from Skin and Aro using 1 this single trigger, I have read the manual several times but I can not. Help me, please.

With a TM2 you can add yoru own wave file. Just drop the 2 sounds into your DAW, render it down as a wav file int he correct format as per the manual and put the SD back card in the TM2.. Or you could get a Y cable and put it in both inputs from your RT30H trigger. just make sure it is the right type of cable.. There is TRS, TRRS etc.

you would load the VST it into your DAW. then record a hit from the vst... and render the file to a .wav..

you should not have any latency from the TM-2. make sure you don't have any space at the beginning of your wave file... I don't know what kindof SD card I have but It should be class 10 or better. It says in the manual what is compatible.

Thanks man. Yes you can.. if you get splitters you can have up to 4 triggers... there is cymbal kick, snare, percussion whatever you want. You can even upload your own samples. with 2 of these and splitters you could have 8 pads.. That would be enough for kick, snare, hats, ride, crash, and a few toms if you wanted.

Just make sure it does what you need, you still need to buy all the pads, cables etc... so you could start out with this and a few pads and upgrade, but finding a used td-11 or something might be cheaper long term. I love the TM2 though. it's a great unit

Retrig cancel is the same setting. time between two hits.. This module is amazing and works perfect. You will be happy with it. I have no issues with double triggers or missing hits. I had a td-20 before this and love my TM-2

Ran into a problem while transfering my own samples. It should be in the "Other" page, right? Could you explain how to get them into the module and how it works when you load them up?

format the SD card with the module, make sure they are formated to the right bitrate as specified in the manual. Drop them into the folders provided or in the base folder, I don't think it reads a few levels down.. They will be at the very end of the file list.

Alright, so something that is VERY important, is that you have to format your SD-card inside the TM-2 before you even try to transfer midi-files from your computer into your SD-card. I skipped this when I trasnfered my samples into the SD-card ( without formating the TM-2 with the SD-card inside it ). If I read the manual before I tried it, it would have already been working :)

Can somebody please help me out here. I too have ddrum triggers and I have a y cable connection for the tm 2 to trigger both of them, but I can't seem to get different sounds from both triggers. Both sound the same. Please help me assign sounds to individual triggers in padx2 setting

You need to set one as the head and one as the rim if you are using a splitter.. Then you apply a sample or sound to the rim and one to the head. you can set the sensitivity different for each one as well.. It is in the manual. I don't usually use a splitter with mine.

Connecting two pads to one TRIG IN jack By using a connection cable (1/4” stereo phone plug 1/4” phone plug x 2: sold separately) you can connect two pads to one TRIG IN jack. This lets you use separate pads to play the head and rim of one TRIG IN jack. * With this connection, striking the rim of the pad won’t produce sound. Connection cable (1/4” stereo phone 1/4” phone x 2: sold separately) Head Rim To TRIG IN 1 or 2 1. Hold down the [SHIFT] button and press the [INST] button. 2. Press the [+] button. The TRIG SETUP-Input screen will appear. 3. Use the TRIG IN [1] [2] buttons to select the TRIG IN jack to which you connected the two pads. 4. Use the [-] [+] buttons to select “PADx2.” 5. Press the [>] button. Strike the two pads to select them, and specify the type of each pad. Here’s how to assign the TM-2’s internal instruments to the pads. 1. Use [-] [+] buttons to select a kit. 2. Press the [INST] button. The INST screen will appear. 3. Strike a pad to select the pad (head or rim) to which you want to assign an instrument. You can also use the TRIG IN [1] [2] buttons to select a pad. 4. Use the [-] [+] buttons to select the instrument that you want to play. If the SD card contains audio files, the audio files on the SD card are shown following the internal instruments. p. 10 If you press the [-] [+] buttons, the folder name is temporarily shown at the top of the screen. MEMO By holding down the [SHIFT] button and pressing the [-] [+] buttons, you can switch between internal instruments (INT) and the SD card (SD). If folders exist, you can also switch folders. 5. Strike the pads to play the sounds. • You can switch instruments in the same way by striking a different pad. • You can change the volume or pitch. p. 11 • You can use effects to modify the sound. p. 12 6. Press the [INST] button to return to the kit screen. The changes you’ve made will be saved automatically

+eltavares95 I have a set... they work pretty awesome. I did had some issues with double triggers.. if you move your drum lots it has to be adjusted every time. I also found sometimes I rest my left beater which is a bad habit and shows more so with the ekits. They are quite sensitive so if the left foot bounces on the head even slightly you get an unwanted trigger. other than that they are freaking awesome. Just not the best for me due to my bad habits haha

great video bro! im very shakey on using triggers since ive never owned any, so this video helped me understand it a little better. i hit pretty hard but i lose power some of the time due to, well not practicing enough haha but alls i wanted to know is that if the roland tm-2 had these settings like threshhold and etc. could you possibly send me some samples of kicks? ill have to learn how to transfer it to the SD card but i can do that on my own, hopefully... haha thanks again! and i play metal too, you fucking rip!!

I have played around with it over the last few years.. It doesn't have to be totally stuffed, But it does help with vibrations. If you hit hard you can turn the sensitivity down, threshold up keep your skin looser and probibly not even need to fill it. I'll fire you an email

cross talk is where u have multiple triggers. you have false triggering most likely because your threshold is too low or sensitivity too high. you also want the drum head very tight with blankets or pillows stuffed inside

beyondbetrayal my threshold is set to 18, my sens needs to be at 32 to compensate for that. i tried the other way round, threshold low and sens at a low amount but that was even worse. my retrig setting is as low as possible, no double triggering so far

Hey man, thanks for the informative video. With this module, could I connect it to my audio interface and hear it through that? I want to do that so I can just plug my headphones into my interface, so that I can play along to click tracks. The DAW I'm using is Reaper.

You bet. Just take a line out and plug it right into the interface. That is what I do.

nope.. I just pick my bass sample, plug the output in to my mixer/interface and away I go... You can put any wave file you want as your kick drum. I could make it play a whole song every time. You can also hook up a few trigger pads to it to have kick, and 3 other sounds. I just use the kick for the most part. Sometimes a bell sound on a pad.... VST's can be triggered from this but you need software, and that is a whole different option that has a big learning curve. I use VST's for my electric kit, not when I just want to trigger a drum. The Roland kick trigger works amazing with this, I believe I have the KT-30.

New to triggers here and I need some help. Technically, would all I need to get started is the TM2, cables, and a bass drum trigger??? I already have a PA system with like 14 inputs that my band also uses for vox and I'm thinking I could plug trigger system directly into that.

That's what I do.. Trigger plugs into the TM2... TM2 goes into the PA.... 1/4 inch cables for both if you use the Roland triggers. Ddrum might use an XLR style cable to 1/4 inch...
