Great informative video! I was at an AD a month ago and saw some Rolex in the display mostly Day-Dates with diamond bezels and some other models. What is interesting is that I returned 2 weeks later and the same watches were in the case unsold but this time had Exhibition Only on them. This tells me they are hiding the fact that demand is down and most likely would sell those watches if someone was interested.

Thanks for the report - very interesting! I imagine a customer would consider themselves pretty lucky if the manager of the store did them a "favor" and let them buy one of those Exhibition Pieces.

Well said! The fact is that in business there is a pendulum effect as supply & demand adjust. I cannot wait to politely give the ADs a taste of their own medicine as demand continues to ebb to the collector's favor! I can't imagine the AD's competing for customers as the Rolex supply increases.

I have such distain for the Rolex brand. They treat their customers like fools and manipulate them at every point - creating artificial demand and scarcity. It’s a deceitful scam and should be unlawful - basically fraud. But as long as there is a long line of pretentious fools queuing up for the privilege to buy a Rolex at huge premiums above an elevated MSRP - they will continue on with the scheme. Good luck suckers…and best wishes for a 50% drop in prices to punish the speculators.

My three cents are... it's retribution time. Rolex is a mass-produced watch, maybe not with G-Shock with quantities. What kind of commodity does a mass-produced steel watch represents, if it can be easily reproduced by chinese for 100 bucks for nearly the same level and for 300 bucks on almost the same level? This "investment" stuff went too far, I can harly imagine, how many watches are sitting in the desks of those "investors", waiting for them to become even more expensive. Just like with modern art, Submariner's value is a matter of some agreement within community, which may come to an end at some time.
@keesketsers5866
@keesketsers5866 11 ай бұрын
The chinese cannot make a fake Rolex that will run for decades without problems or maintenance for $300. If they could, they would, but they can't. No one can. Also, it's a useless pursuit, want a perfect watch worth every cent? Buy a G-Shock. It's exactly because of these investment a-holes that people got confused why a Rolex is expensive. I hope the prices drop like a brick.

I bought a JLC, Breitling, TAG and Tudor from my AD. They know I’m an enthusiast. I asked about a Rolex GMT-Master2 and they said they could make it happen only if I bought a heavy hitting Lange. I’m like - please just put me on the list. Every time I went in there they’d look up what brands I hadn’t bought and kept trying to steer me into stuff like Cartier and IWC, which I have no interest in. I highly suspect that they are flipping a lot of their Rolex inventory onto the grey market and always tend to steer loyal customers into anything but Rolex. I ended up getting jack of the Swiss watch industry. I sold all the pieces I bought from the AD as I developed negative connotations with those pieces. Now I just have a Tudor I bought from a pre-owned seller and just buy Chinese and microbrand pieces now so I don’t have to deal with greedy AD bullshite. Win the battle but lose the war, they have. At least in my eyes. Fsck ‘em once they cross me, they don’t get a second chance - they don’t get me back. They can go to hell.

The worst thing is - nobody is buying these watches. They are just sitting forever. Even at these dropped prices there are no buyers anymore. Rolex was always "a 10% off msrp" brand .. Back in 2017 you could buy any model at a discount. These times are coming back faster than you think as there's no helicopter money anymore, borders are open and people are traveling again, spending money on different thing and whole watch sentiment has faded .. Flippers can't resell their watches they bought at the AD to a grey dealer next door so they took their money elsewhere .. Only real Rolex admirers are left, and none of them will pay a 100% markap for a GMT.

Hi Austin, here in Thailand you will find all watches at AD’s (display only) but windows are full. September must have been especially bad and slow, grey dealers offered watches like crazy. I had a call from an AD in Bangkok offering me a white gold Sub (1510000 Baht), very nice watch but I had to decline as this one was just offered for 1350000 Baht in grey market (we talk brand new unused 23 watch, B&P). The economy is hit hard here with a new Gvmt which seems a bit lost what to do. The Baht is weak which makes me wonder what Rolex will do with prices in 2024 …… demand in Thailand is very weak at the moment. Dealers will still sell to flippers back door to make an extra $ on the high demand SSP but it will get harder for them to sell the rest.

We’re in the business of watches since 2018, and we can clearly see the drop of prices of hype watches such as Rolex. In fact, even though Rolexes have dropped, the reality is in the dealer markets, no one is buying or able to actually sell Rolexes. Most sales are really between dealer to dealer, and one indication the market is going to continue dropping as Austin predicted is this, if there is any stability in market, dealers will actually pay cash for Rolexes- and not consigning them. No one in the non watch world is really buying anymore.. 😊 My suggestion, wait for Rolex to continue to drop. It will.

Rolex makes 1 million watches a year and there are 2000 ADs in the world. On average, each AD gets 500 new pieces EVERY year, the number might go up or down by location. If you keep walking into your AD and they have empty shelves, they're backdooring product. These family owned ADs can pound sand. Hopefully Rolex cracks down on them and revokes their licenses, this is disgusting lol
@dannysimenauer5745
@dannysimenauer5745 11 ай бұрын
You are correct. There have been several grey market dealers who confirmed that AD's are selling Rolex out the back door on KZbin. The real proof is that you go to the AD and see empty showcases. Then you go to grey market websites and see any model you want in quantity -- some have tags and stickers on (which means it came form the AD directly).
@fj7509
@fj7509 11 ай бұрын
Yup, this is it right there. ADs are supposed to remove the stickers when selling watches directly to clients. If a watch is on the grey with full stickers it's been backdoored. The front of house at the family-owned AD in my area openly admitted to saying, "the owner chooses who the desirable sports models go to." I would recommend seeing if you can flag this to Rolex. They might look into this issue and go after the AD. I suspect these are the shops they're trying to get rid of with the Bucherer acquisition.@@dannysimenauer5745

You are absolutely right about watches not being in cases again at the ADs. I've noticed ADs have switched all their display cases from a case that has 20 slots to display watches to a smaller case that holds 1 or 2 "exhibition pieces". None of the stock will be on display anymore, they will offer common datejust models to walk in clients after they screen them thru conversation.

You talk like a flipper. Historically, the prices will just keep going up as ALL central banks keep printing currency each year, so the value of your currency devalues as well. Double the price compared to 10 years ago and 10 times since the 60ies. 1-2 billion people more now than 10-20 years ago and focus on luxury goods as watches are going up yearly. Demand can never follow supply. So buy, enjoy, and keep your Rolexes if you are a real collector.

looking at it from a business point of view [just my point of view] the hiked Rolex prices of grey market always presented to me that Rolex faced a huge "pending" problem that could even cause their brand an even larger headache of unpopularity. This was made worse by their lack of AD control and the AD's under the table trades of new stock straight to the grey market. In my opinion Rolex have to take it all vertical and remove the AD problem that only deals with current issues. On the face of it the Rolex grey market prices might seem great for the brand but that will not be the case long term as I expect Rolex hasn't gone through unpopularity yet, that it will inevitably do at some point. Again, just my thoughts.

@@mr_grillet I've actually chatted to Rolex person's and I would not quote them or offer a negative but in my own opinion, the Grey Market price hiking always presented a big problem and those who were benefitting mainly the independent AD's that supplied the popular watches to their preferred sellers have really caused a failure point for Rolex. If I was advising Rolex I would end all AD's and take it all in-house and this will only stop the bleeding but not the wound. Again this is only my opinion based on how I see the business.

There won't be a huge rolex following if new customers are unable to obtain one for a reasonable price. Easiest to get: -Sea Dewellers (all current models). -Ever Rose models. -Two Tone watches. Hard to get: -DJ 36 (big wait, most versions, surprising) Can’t get: -steel Submariner’s -GMTs -Daytonas. The “dip” in vintage pieces is going lower because too many pseudo enthusiasts, or we could also say speculative minds who want to be safe with every penny they spend,have bought the signature pieces from Rolex. Many of these people don’t have the money to just keep these watches for fun. When they start selling the early 2000s Submariners etc, the prices for all other models will also decrease. Recently went to a major AD in southwest FL and they had one 41mm Datejust with diamonds, jubilee, fluted, rose gold for sale three weeks ago; absolutely beautiful watch!They are servicing my wife’s watch so asked this weekend about new watches and they had two ladies’ Datejusts for sale. As they sell less and inventory increases, more of the hard to get pieces will miraculously appear from the vault. Kinda shady? Free enterprise?
