The current seadweller 43mm is a awsome piece. Wear it every day. It's a great fit if you are a slightly bigger person. Ie I have 20cm wrist circumference. If I wear a GMTII or a Submariner they look like baby watches compared to the SD43. (actually the GMTII with stock jubilee bracelet barely fits over my hands) Love the adjustment as well. I live in Asia where it's sometimes 40 degrees celcius, and work/visit in Europe where it's colder, causing you wrist to expand and shrink. And setting it slightly smaller or bigger is very easy. Designwise I would have left the cyclops off but that is the only thing. The only drawback of the seadwellers is the thickness of the case. 15mm for 43mm and 17mm for the deepsea. If you need to wear one under a suit or something then a different model might be more convenient. As for stainless steel versus titanium. Titanium is much lighter than stainless steel but for the same volume/material size stainless steel is actually stronger. So if you wish to create a case that is equally strong to the stainless case, it would have to be bigger. This comes into play when you wish to design a watch able to withstand 3900m, it would likely make the watch even bigger than the deepsea. Titanium would actually be more suited for watches like the GMTII or Submariner for that reason, when you are talking practical use.

When you say "100 meters," do you really mean 100 feet (30 meters)? Nitrogen narcosis tends to be a problem south of 100 ft. 130 ft is considered the maximum depth for recreational diving. Below that involves "technical diving." I am a mere Advanced Open Water Diver, so mixes involving helium (Trimix) are beyond my knowledge level. However, the gas in one's tank is delivered ultimately at the ambient pressure, which depends on depth. This means that breathing at depth uses more air than breathing at the surface. That said, at recreational depths, a decently designed regulator will not require more effort to breathe than at the surface.
@ID-Guy2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for expanding on this! I removed a segment at the beginning of this section where I wanted to use "100m" as a round number and in there I mentioned 30m's is a good standard. It got way too technical ;) In reality, I was trying to get across how mad it is to travel to a depth of 100m's let alone the 300m's most watches are rated to. The world of gasses and pressure in water is crazy... something I definitely need to dabble in. Thank you again for clearing up these details!
@mt24Carson2 жыл бұрын
Great points. While I have not dived in several years, I also am an Advanced Open Water diver. The deepest I have been down is ~150 feet...it was at the base of a reef, and when you looked to the other side, all you saw was the dark utter blackness. You can really feel the pressure affecting you. Any further down, as noted you would need another mixture such as Nitrox. Not much of a Rolex fan generally, though if they make good on a titanium Yacht Master, I will definitely take a look. Thanks @IDGuy as always. 👍⌚️🍷🎸🥃🏔🌲

Thank you for clearing this up Brian! I should've thrown in more specifics about mixing gasses. There was an entire segment I cut where I used "100m" as a round number and went through discussing 30m's etc. It would've waaay too extensive for the audience ;)

This is one of the frustrating things about a brand like Rolex. When is the last time they’ve gone out on a limb and have taken risks and designed a watch that really turns heads and is a conversation starter? Instead, Rolex plays it safe and comes out with the same thing just slightly different. Watch makers have been coming out with Titanium watches for decades so Rolex comes out with a watch in a slightly different Titanium and they slap on “it’s revolutionary”, “ground breaking” and “it’s never been done before” when in reality other companies have done the work and Rolex gets all the fanfare.

The last time IMO was the Sky-Dweller. That piece is genuinely amazing in terms of watchmaking and composition (as a vintage inspired flyers watch) But too often today it's either recasing or adjusting sizes. Man these big bulky 44mm Sea Dwellers. Who buys/wears these things? You see tons of them on the used market for relatively cheap as far as Rolex prices go. A Deep Sea Challenge in Ti would be interesting as a design exercise and for bragging rights. I’m sure it will be collectible if released as a limited edition. The 2014-16 SD4K 40mm ceramic was probably the best Sea Dweller Rolex put out. It still had the tapered lug case but all the modern upgrades. At 40mm it was still everyday wearable. It didn’t sell well and Rolex discontinued it after only 2.5 years. As a short production transitional model it should be a future collectible

Rolex vs Omega. Ferrari vs Lamborghini. Coke vs Pepsi. Rivalries that date back decades are fun to watch. And ultimately all this competition means better products and more choices for consumers. I've never tried on a titanium watch before, but if it truly is lighter than steel then I agree with your notion of a DEEPSEA using such material considering how chunky and robust it would be. But what about the submarine steel famously used by Sinn UX models? I'm no expert but aren't they just as strong as titanium, or perhaps they're just as heavy as stainless steel? Anyhoo, thumbs up with your choice of using orange as the DEEPSEA's accent color (Rolex better pay attention or at least give credit if the ever choose to go this route 👍). Now if only Adamantium or Vibranium are actual metals... 😁 Cheers 🍺
@ID-Guy2 жыл бұрын
Ah Fresh. Once you go Titanium... I'd say it's at least 1/3rd lighter than steel? So it makes a larger watch (fatter case) feel so much lighter on the wrist. And as for Sinn's Sub Steel, I have no idea how they manage to get the hardness so spot on... BUT the take home is that Titanium ends up being Lighter, less corrosive, completely hypoallergenic and stronger than stainless steel (not necessarily scratch resistant) It's a fascinating metal. I so wish more brands would run with it! - Adamantium... now we're talking!! WolverineSea ;)

Some explanation. You need to add hellium to the air mix, not because oxygen got smaller and there is no diffference in force you require to take a breath at 10, 50 or 100 meters. The regulator adjusts to the changing prussure and keeps air supply without a change. The problem is that your lungs take the same vollume of air, but with higher prussure the air is enriched and you multiply the number of oxygen atoms you get with each breath. The oxygen ratio in the air mix stays at 20%, but below 40 meters, you get so much of it, as if you breathed with the pure oxygen on the surface. Above this threshold, the oxygen becomes toxic, your cells receive too much of it and it ends up in seizure and death. To mitigate it you need to deplete air and add another gas (hellium) to lower the oxyngen ratio in the mix.

Rolex released the DBlue in 2014. Just wanted to clarify that as your commentary seems to suggest the release date was 2012. That was the year James Cameron made the dive, not the year the watch was released.
@nukie4042 жыл бұрын
Great video as always! Honestly kind of surprising that Rolex still doesn't have proper titanium watches... it'd be interesting to see if they release anything that might divert attention away from the Tudor Pelagos though.
@ID-Guy2 жыл бұрын
Tudor struck that winning formula using Titanium right from the start with their Pelagos and now after seeing so many makers doing the same it's almost like Rolex is playing catchup BUT it'll be interesting to see what they bring the to table. Have a great start to your weekend brother!

If watches can easily go deeper than their depth with no damage ,why do most watch manufacturers say you need at least 100 m rating minimum to go swimming ?
@ID-Guy2 жыл бұрын
I think there's a divide (maybe it has to do with ISO and how watches are rated) but watches without screw down crowns generally have a WR of 30m - 50m. When a watch has 100m's it's almost guaranteed that they have screw down crowns. My thinking is the brand recommends 100m's because it's a way for them to cover their asses. Anything less than that and all the technicalities come in when people start use chronograph pushers underwater etc. etc.

Great episode once again. Deep Sea is such a cool watch. Sadly way to big for me, as is the Ploprof. Would love to be able to wear one of them but no such luck. I did have a Deep Sea on my wrist in 2013, that did make me pull the trigger on a BLNR.
@ID-Guy2 жыл бұрын
And the BLNR was never a bad choice ;) I tried on the SD43 just when it launched and that size was a dream (even on my skinny wrist) I'd gladly get one IF they weren't like 30k or whatever they're sitting at now...

@@ID-Guy lets face it , apart from the numbers on the dial , and bragging rights at the bar , the difference between a depth rating of 200m and 2000m makes not one jot of a difference in real life , most folk I know take off their dive watches to shower.
@ID-Guy2 жыл бұрын
@@tomthompson7400 Most people take their dive watches off before heading out into the rain hahaha! Fully agree Tom. I try to hammer home that point in this video about depth rating and how overkill it is (for divers and watches)

@@ID-Guy what’s your take on swimming with a Speedy Pro? Depth rating is 50m about 25 times the depth of most pools. I wouldn’t be concerned but many people 😱
@ID-Guy2 жыл бұрын
@@MasterChief37 I personally wouldn't do it BUT I know two people who have been mad enough to have done it ;) The issue I reckon wouldn't appear at first (for a long time) but water around of those seals surrounding the chronograph pushers / crown would do stupid things and chances are micro droplets could work their way into the case over time. Just being around moisture in the air over the decades can affect the innards of a watch.

If I could chip in here for a second about depth ratings. The most crucial moment for a 200 metre watch is not the range between one meter and 200 metres. It is the impact upon which the watch hits the water and has to overcome the surface tension of the water. if you fall from a boat or jump from a cliff into water, the surface of water becomes really hard and the impact can be equivalent to much higher depth than 200 metres. So yes. Even for beach explorers who just enjoy jumping into water from a fairly high altitude, a 500 metre watch has its practical purpose.
@rouge-gsd30612 жыл бұрын
Even if they don't increase the depth rating I think Making a 44mm watch but slimmer would be a great alternative way. In titanium it would still carry that professional diver edge but a more compact case would outclass omega majorly in terms of wearability. Ironically enough it would be a similar situation to what happened to the ploprof way back when that competition was going on. Or more simply the over built idea is more omegas thing. Rolex just does simple miniscule changes that work extremely well.

Fantastic production video here. You really did your homework and it shows. I love the tool watch aesthetic and I believe Rolex has gotten away from that with many of their current sport watch models. I own a Sea Dweller 4000 Ceramic and love it. The one thing I wish it had is a matte dial and bezel insert. If your predictions come true, the new Deep Sea titanium anniversary model will be something to behold.
@chrisstevenson26222 жыл бұрын
I don’t understand why Titanium hasn’t been used earlier. It’s tougher and lighter than Steel and it doesn’t corrode. This to me a no brainer when selecting a Titanium for a tool watch. Who in their right mind would wear the Rolex Deep Sea if you don’t dive? This is like owning a car that goes 300mph when the speed limit is only 70. I guess if you want bragging rights and you don’t get enough attention from your family or friends.

Your ideas are almost always better than the reality. I have a sea dweller and a seiko shogun which is titanium. Frankly I wear the seiko almost all the time as the seadweller is not convenient for everyday wear. It’s really heavy and nowhere near as comfortable.
