THE best live album of all time! This one and The Who's 'Live at Leeds' are my two favorite live albums. The Stones are at the top of their game here. In the absence of The Beatles, The Stones became the "greatest rock and roll band in the world." A title very quickly disputed by Led Zeppelin. When Mick Taylor was in the band, they were blues rock at it's best. This album rocks from start to finish. It's my favorite Stones album, live or otherwise.

Good choice and nice review. What's interesting about this period is that both the Stones and the Beatles took a break from touring in 1966 (notwithstanding one-off shows here and there) to concentrate on studio work. It turned out to be their most productive period : in three years they recorded Revolver, Buttons, Pepper's, Majesties, White, Beggars, Be, Bleed & Abbey, as well as numerous notable singles. The Stones took to the road again in late 1969 for their American Tour, in which they invented the template of modern touring with the advancement of sound & lighting technology and the changing behaviours of audiences. This is the context out of which Ya Yas was born. The Beatles, still traumatised by their mid-'60s on-stage experiences, did not give this new live-show era a chance, or more precisely, the chance was not given by them. They split just at a time when they could have gone on to hear themselves on stage again. One for counterfactual historians to ponder over... As for the music from the record, an additional highlight of the many is Charlie's exceptional drum intro and groove on Sympathy for the Devil -- a version he nor the rest of the band would replicate in the same way again. It serves to emphasise, among other things, the song's subtle rhythmic range.

For me it is definitely the best live Stones album overall. Some of the others still have remarkable moments. The El Mocambo side of "Love You Live", some moments on "Still Life", and "Ladies And Gentlemen...". Everyone, who loves the group, should hear the live-at-Leeds "Let It Rock" from 1971, originally on the B-side of the British release of "Brown Sugar", and now on the Super Deluxe "Sticky Fingers" release. The problem for me is that their late sixties staples show up on almost every live album. How many live versions of "Jumping Jack Flash" does one need? The "Ya-Yas" version set the template. I bought "Live Licks" in a sale, and loved the rendition of "Can't You Hear Me Knocking", the Stones of 2002/3 taking on a song that they never attempted live at their peak, and winning. An honourable mention must go to "I'm Moving On" on their "Got Live If You Want It" EP from 1965. "Ya-Yas" is the only live Stones album that I can bear to play right through.

Great review and agree with all the other comments about it being the best live album, along with Live at Leeds as mentioned. Another great one being Van Morrison's Too late to stop now. This was of course recorded at the end of their '69 tour when they had clearly "warmed up", as opposed to their hastily arranged Hyde Park gig in July.

One of my favorite live albums. This was the golden era for The Rolling Stones, Ya Yas was released between Let It Bleed and Sticky Fingers. And a lot of these versions can be heard in the Gimme Shelter movie. Great review John.

In my opinion, if any comparison of strengths is to be made between the Stones and the Beatles, it would illustrate that the Beatles were a studio band and the Stones were a live band. The Beatles locked themselves in the studio for nearly half of their existence while the Stones were constantly performing in front of their fans. To me, bands exists to play live and be witnessed by their fans. Sure, they create the music in the studio, but the stage is where they stretch their songs to their limits. Together. One take. No producers. No breaks. Performing in front of an audience should represent a band at its peak. Ya-Ya's does that.

Its interesting that you put things in a Beatles context, it may irritate some but its the right thing to do when discussing the Stones of this period.

As for the Beatles braving the waters to try to play live again let’s say around 1970.... they knew they were toast on multiple levels. And how would they have been able to stand there and just sing their songs when you had the Stones peaking, Hendrix The Who and now here comes Zeppelin, Tull, Sabbath .... I think the Beatles would have had exceptionally low confidence about their own abilities as a live band quite frankly.
@terrythekittie5 жыл бұрын
Their rooftop show proved they were quite capable of playing live and with Billy Preston alongside they could have gone out on tour but for the fact that George was fed up with Paul and John was fed up full stop. To say the Beatles had low confidence about their own abilities as a live band is rubbish.
@moonbeamskies33465 жыл бұрын
@@terrythekittie It is true, Paul was very concerned about the Beatles being compared to the other bands of 1969 in a live concert setting. The Beatles would have needed not only Billy Preston but another lead guitarist to be able to put on 90 minute shows. Paul assembled Wings a few later with that in mind. And George Harrison can be heard in the Let It Be film talking about how poorly they play live. The truth is that aside from Paul, the Beatles were dreadful.

i know these weren't released by the stones but by eagle rock but Some Girls Live in '78 and Ladies and Gentlemen the Rolling stones chronicling their Exile on Main Street tour were absolutely amazing. the energy and tightness of the band is especially noticeable on those records in my opinion more so then on this one. I love this record and their live performances only get better from here for sure tho this is defiantly the jumping off point

Hey John why don’t you do a review of the Rolling Stones third live album of “ LOVE YOU LIVE”! I think their second live album is very good but my favorite live album by them is “LOVE YOU LIVE”!!! They totally remastered there third live cd in 2009 and it sounds perfect and I do mean: The word PERFECT!!! Everyone on the planet should Buy this classic double CD set of “LOVE YOU LIVE”!!

The Beatles could have toured, and they sounded in 69 pretty hot vocals always great and McCartney was playing great bass during this time. I dig the Stones but was never impressed by their live sound, the Beatles aged a lot in 8 years, It’s hard to be the best for 1 year let alone 6 , and they quit at the top of their game.They probably should have taken 5 years off and then regroup ? But the record contracts,wouldn’t allow that, product product!

Although it doesn’t get much respect, I’m a bit partial to The Stones 77’ record “Love You Live”, particularly the El Mocambo side three with the blues covers, which is one of my favorite sides in whole Rolling Stones catalogue. I find the whole album to be quite good, although in large part due to Billy Preston’s funky piano playing throughout. Nice review John.

Thomas Calden Interesting to see that album get some love in these comments. For me it was just totally forgettable. I actually much preferred their sound represented on the 81 tour via the Still Life record.

I believe Glyn Johns blew it again by not selecting the live version of "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" (On the 40th Anniversary release DVD/Video 6:00 Version) on the original album!!! They included two Chuck Berry covers! Was it necessary to include the "Carol" and "Little Queenie" covers on this "Live" album? They also could have included the "live" versions of "Under My Thumb"/I'm Free" (On the 40th Anniversary release CD/Audio Version. Why were those two tracks released separate from each other when they,'re supposed to segue to make one track 6:25 in length. Glyn Johns really screwed up the earlier unreleased "Get Back" album by featuring earlier inferior takes than the more polished takes that were recorded later on during that Beatles Get Back/Let it Be project!

Of course the Stones were a better live band than the Beatles. Basically after Revolver, the Beatles had no hope of reproducing their sound on stage unless they lip synced the recordings. Can you imagine what Sgt. Peppers would sound like stripped down?
@zenvagabond3 жыл бұрын
This album is a sloppy mess and the Stones at their grubbiest. Not a great live record as far as musicianship is concerned, but great for live energy and drive. It's fun but far from a classic. Some of the concerts/live recordings on their Remasters (i.e. Sticky fingers, Goats Head Soup) are far, far better.
