An acceptable analogy would be renting an apartment: when a man is renting an apartment, he does not plant a garden, or redo the interior, update the appliances, maintain the plumbing/electricity/whatever, and the reason is simple - it is not his, he does not need to do any of that because it is the landlord's property and responsibility. Any investment of time, money, and labor will be lost, wasted. Men instinctively feel the same way about relationships - if the woman could leave at any time and be just fine without him, then investing himself emotionally or financially is a losing proposition. It was never about power, or control (although those are factors), it was about necessity. Men find fulfillment in being necessary. There is a fear of abandonment that underpins it all, absolutely, but that fear is entirely rational and justified, it's not even close to a "pathological" need, it is simply a biological need of men, no different than the biological need to eat or sleep - abandonment historically meant death or oppression from others. To call it "pathological" is doing a great disservice to men; you're essentially saying that men *being* men is delusional or crazy, and that is NOT a fair or reasonable claim to make.
