@Rodrick Evans The NIV is a far more dynamic translation than the NASB. The NASB aims for a ‘word for word’ translation while the NIV opts for a more ‘thought for thought’ translation. Hence, the NIV uses ‘through’ to explain what is meant by the word ‘by’.

@@mitchellc4 Jesus never claimed to be God? Really? What about these passages. Deutoronomy 32:39 “See now that I, I am HE, And there is no god with me; I kill, and I make alive; I wound, and I heal, And there is none that delivereth out of my hand” God says “I am HE”, a unique name for God like “I Am”. We know it’s a name because God calls himself “ I am HE” many many times in the Old Testament, which is B.C. God says “I am HE” in 1 Samuel 4:16, 2 Samuel 20:17, 1 Kings 18:8, 2 Chronicles 21:17, Isaiah 10:13, Isaiah 41:4, Isaiah 43:10, Isaiah 43:13, Isaiah 43:25, Isaiah 46:4, Isaiah 48:12, and so many more verses that are countless, and guess what Jesus calls himself in Matthew 14:27… “and immediately Jesus spake to them, saying, 'Be of good courage, I am he, be not afraid.' Jesus referred to himself as “I am He” other times in the gospels. There are a plethora of verses, so I'll give 4 verses. Jesus says “I am He” in John 8:18, Luke 21:8, John 13:19, John 18:6, and more. A lot of the passages say “I am He who…” so I included the verses here that say a plain “I am he” as referring to himself, that imply nothing else other than him calling himself a divine name from the old testament. John 5:23 “so that everyone will honor the Son, just as they honor the Father. But if you refuse to honor the Son, then you are certainly not honoring the Father who sent him.” Here he tells you to honor him as you honor the Father. How do we honor the Father? We worship him, and only God is to be worshiped like that. We can't say that Jesus one God and the Father is another God then, or else this would contradict commandment 1, and Jesus obviously agrees with commandment 1, so if he knows we cannot worship any other God, and wants us to worship him, then he showing us that the Father and himself, Jesus, are both God. Now, another thing is that in the context, Jesus is accused by the jews of breaking the sabbath by healing someone. Then Jesus says that the Father works on the sabbath, therefore since he is the Son of the Father, he works as well. Look at verse 19 “So Jesus answered and said to them, “Truly, truly I say to you, the Son can do nothing from himself except what he sees the Father doing. For whatever that one does, these things also the Son does likewise.” Ironically, you actually see some claim of divinity here, unlike some people who take this verse out of its context to disprove Jesus’ divinity. Jesus says that he does exactly what the Father does. First, can a mere prophet say that they do everything that God does perfectly? No. So, knowing full well that the jews knew full well about the sabbath law, that human beings are not supposed to work on the sabbath because God rested on the 6th day, Jesus tells them that he works on the sabbath because the Father does as well. And so there was a debate among the jews about if God rests on the sabbath because the sabbath law says not to work on Saturdays, but God always works by holding the universe together and everything. So when Jesus said that he does what the Father does, in this context, working on the sabbath, the Jews thought that he was claiming to be equal with God. So, you see Jesus wanting worship. He is doing the same works the Father does so that everyone may honor him just as they honor the Father, and you honor the Father by loving him with all of your heart, mind, soul, and strength like the Torah says. Now, someone might say “Oh he is just saying that we wants to be simply honored like how the Father is also honored. Not as much honor as the Father, but he is saying that he is doing this so that everyone will honor him as well.” Nope. This doesn’t work with the context. So in John 5, Jesus was healing a man in the sabbath day and told him to pick up his pallet and walk, and the Jews, who were very strict about it, confronted and rebuked Jesus for doing it because he was doing work on the sabbath (John 5:8-16). But then Jesus tells them that his Father is working, therefore he works as well because he does everything that the Father does (John 5:17, John 5:19-21). And the idea of “Son of __” meant that you would do what your Father did. For example, if your father was a carpenter, then everyone would assume you were also a carpenter, and if you call yourself the son of a carpenter, everyone would assume the same. At that time, you would usually do what your father does. So Jesus says that the Father, who is the God of the Old testament (John 5:37-39, John 5:42), works on the sabbath, therefore he does too, so the jews get mad and try to kill him. So, the context is that Jesus does whatever the Father does, and does it exactly and perfectly and that is why he is called the Son of God. And THEN Jesus says that he does this so that everyone may honor the son just as they honor the Father. The point here is, if Jesus does the exact same works as the Father for that reason, then he wants the same LEVEL and AMOUNT of honor as the Father. That is why he said that.

Jeromy and I went to the same Big Eva-esque church in 2018. When that church closed its doors (in catastrophic fashion), he went Romish and I went Reformed. To me, this demonstrates how attending a church with shallow doctrine does people a disservice when times get tough.

Amen. Years ago...2005...I asked if we could do more in depth bible studies....I wanted to know the word better. I was scoffed at.... something to the point of "The disciples were merely fishermen..... not scholars." :( Knowing the word is to know the Lord. Hunger and thirst for righteousness..."The beginning of wisdom is this, get wisdom, get insight" Not being Bereans..... in a reformed church OR a catholic church is to one's own demise. (Needless to say, I left the church, sad.... but I had to leave to grow....I wanted to know Christ......I truly loved my family in the Lord at The R. As for the way the way the church ended years later.....it was an absolute grievous injustice that the GCM leaders allowed and they ought to fear God for their mishandling and repent)

Hello Protestants. What do you think of the argument that history PROVES Catholicism, for Augustine supported infant baptism, a hierarchical visible physical Church with a priesthood, and the Eucharist?

I grew up Protestant, I studied the history of the Church and came to the conclusion that history proved the claims of Orthodoxy as the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church, it’s the only legitimate option for the title of “One true Church”. A survey through Church history refuted Roman Catholicism more thoroughly than it did Protestantism.

@@ObsidianTeen I like DBH as well, though he doesn’t represent Orthodoxy very well at all. Conservative Orthodox believers usually don’t like him very much, specifically because he’s essentially an Origenist and has tried to rehabilitate Origen (who is a condemned heretic in the Orthodox Church) in his work. I agree with him on the afterlife, but technically I’m not really supposed to.

the first quotation is not in the Bible - it's a serious mistranslation (in Greek there is no construction corresponding to 'having faith in something or someone') it would be better translated as: whom God has set forth as propitiation/purification through faithfulness, by means of his blood - the faithfulness is that of Christ, giving his live as purification for our sins, so that we receive the new heart promised to the members of the new covenant

Why do you Protestants always quote Ephesians 2:8-9 and leave out 2-10 Ephesians : 2 : 10 - For we are his handiwork, created in Christ Jesus for the good works which God has prepared and in which we should walk. Good works are in there that is surprising.

@Stephen Woolley research the Early Church Fathers on that verse your wrong my friend we be are required to do good works but those works are given to us by God’s Grace to walk like Jesus Christ through life . Remember there was no Bible for almost 400 years . Jesus left a church not a Bible his church gave the world the Bible on August 28th , 397 AD from the Council of Carthage. Jesus left a church if our Lord thought the Bible was the most important thing he would have left Bibles for everyone and as Ignatius of Antioch taught by Apostle John said in 90 AD wherever the Bishops are let the people be wherever Jesus Christ is so is the Catholic Church. I hope when you look at this quote you don’t think Apostle John taught Ignatius wrong now that would be a major problem for you after death ..

2:43 - Couldn’t 1 Corinthians 11:1 be taken as support for the elders acting “in persona christi”? Paul doesn’t say “imitate Christ as I imitate Christ”. He says “imitate ME as I imitate Christ”. To me, this implies that he sees his role as more specifically a stand-in for Christ than other lay people.

Only in the context of following his example (He's concluding his point from chapter 10, where he just said "Give no offense to Jews or to Greeks or to the church of God, just as I try to please everyone in everything I do, not seeking my own advantage, but that of many, that they may be saved.") That's very different from acting as a priest who offers or reiterates sacrifices to God. That duty is solely given to Christ, as Hebrews 10:11-14 says: "And every priest stands daily at his service, offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God, waiting from that time until his enemies should be made a footstool for his feet. For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified."

I have never heard this interpretation before. I have always interpreted it as conditional. I read; Imitate me ONLY as I imitate Christ. It is the same as bearing any other gospel: " But though we, or an angel from heaven, should preach unto you any gospel other than that which we preached unto you, let him be anathema. " I read, If I, Paul, come to you with a different gospel count me, Paul, as anathema.

If you say whatever you want from scripture then you don’t have the Holy Spirit and in fact this is exactly what the Catholics do. They don’t lead by the spirit instead they lead by the flesh. It’s self evident, Jesus said Himself you will know them by their fruits. Scripture isn’t sufficient to them and they continue to add doctrine to their false teachings and continue to flip scripture to their own delusion. There are primary and secondary things Christians disagree on. The problem starts when you change doctrine and salvation and that is EXACTLY what the Catholic church does. I was saved outside of the Catholic Church, saved by Jesus on November 2nd and 3rd and now I have the Holy Spirit. We are the body of Christ, the true believers.

There is a big difference between a lay teacher and the leader of a congregation

Actually, I would submit that he understands the full counsel of God. The man understands Greek. He can write and read Greek and he can understand the original Greek manuscripts as conveyed in original scripture from the manuscript tradition. John Calvin, all he understood was that nothing happens without God for knowing, calling, and bestowing upon humanity.
