i would love to buy you a copy of Osho's Book of Secrets if it would motivate you to take a peak. he talks about traditional Indian philosophy but has an Anglo-American background. very interesting stuff, impacted how i live my life, because he inspired me to be "lucid dreaming while awake".

I grew up listening to an MR James ghost story every Christmas on the BBC, it's one of my favourite Christmas traditions

Absolutely loved this! For my own part, the tradition of telling and listening to ghost stories is one I hold dear. This year I made a point of watching the 1968 BBC adaptation of M.R James's Whistle and I'll Come To You. In fact the BBC would make a point of producing a Ghost story every year for a while. These productions are collectively known as A Ghost Story for Christmas. Usually based on the works of M.R. James and other British authors. The entire collection can be purchased from amazon for fairly cheap and are great viewing at this time of year. It's interesting as M.R. James from whom these productions were often drawn, was a great advocate for the tradition of telling ghost stories during the festive period. As a Cambridge professor he would invite students back to his chambers on Christmas Eve and tell these stories that he had written as a pass time. I heartily recommend his work, not just in the context of this seasonal tradition. But also from an esoteric perspective. As a number of his works, notably Canon Alberic's Scrap Book, Lost Hearts and Casting The Runes, draw heavily from the western occult tradition. A good read for any lover of spooky tales and the esoteric. Wishing you the best of the season and thank you for gifting us all with such a wonderful channel.

There is still a kind of practice of this in the UK. Every Christmas there is an adaptation of a ghost story on the BBC - usually something by MR James or written in that style. Mark Gatiss is usually involved, and he knows his horror. We always make sure to watch and discuss it with friends.

I do have a related (sort of) Ghost story. In 2015 my father, Sheldon Paul Colvin, had died on Halloween, and my mother 9 years prior to that. My sisters and I were called by the hospice worker to come quickly because, as he said on the phone, "Your father is in the process of active dying." I was at a halloween party that Halloween Eve dressed as a Wizard, and when I heard his words while I was surrounded by people dressed in various ghoulish outfits, I thought, "Zombie!" We stayed up all night with him and he passed on Halloween morning at 10:56. Grieving is an odd thing, and given that my father was almost 91, his passing was hardly a surprise. So my immediate response was muted, It wouldn't be until the next year that it would hit me. After Halloween in 2016 I had a dream. My father was sitting in his living room chair and I was sitting opposite him as I had many times before. I said to him, "I miss mom." He responded, "I miss her too." I then said, "We should get my sisters together for Christmas." His only response was, "Hmmm." Thinking he was hesitant, I said, "They will like that!". He responded, "Oh, I'm sure they will," as he smiled mischievously. I woke up convinced he was messing with my head from beyond the grave.

WE DO THIS TRADITION in my League of Occult Research and Education in Olympia, WA. I started doing this around Winter Solstices about ten years ago. We are a research group, so there is an emphasis on telling your own personal encounters, whether religious experiences, psychedelic entities, ghosts or UFOs. We go around the circle and everybody is invited to contribute. Ive also told vintage ghost stories, some of which are quite educational LOL : MR James, Algernon Blackwood, ETA Hoffman, Bulwer Lytton, Edith Nesbit, EF Benson & others who deserve to be read more!

Marvelous... Thank you! One thinks immediately of M. R. James at Cambridge, reading his ghost stories to colleagues at Christmastide. His stories, by the way, I find to be among the few genuinely creepy examples of the Victorian/Edwardian genre. One of them, "Casting the Runes", a personal favorite, made its way to Hollywood, and became "Curse of the Demon" (1957) (spellchecker suggests "curse of the Democrat" 🙄), pitting psychologist John Holden (Dana Andrews) against sorcerer Julian Karswell (Niall MacGinnis). But perhaps this is old hat to you...

Maybe one day I’ll tell you my ghost story. The ghost existed before I was born, it revealed itself to my father, it killed my mother, and it revealed itself to me and menaced me for a while. Now I know exactly how to handle these sort of things although I will not go seek it out for vengeance. What is done is done.

Nice to hear about you doing calligraphy when copying text as a meditative exercise. I was curious how long it takes you since being from an Ancient Christian Sect I often get tired of Modern Christians claiming we do not read the Bible/Scriptures. They often take for granted they can just order a mass produced volume from a robotically controlled printing press made in the span of a few hours or a digital software copy instantly available instead of handwritten copy that would possibly take a monastic month to copy.

I always watch The nightmare before Christmas around the holidays. I wonder if that's the same as ghost stories? I watch a lot of ghost themed Christmas movies thru december, its been a bit of a tradition for me. But it's not been a conscious thing related to religion. It's just a personal tradition I do on my own (I'm swedish btw, if that matters).
