Hours of adult group swim lessons and you've addressed some of the issues I have been having for years...and I tried the exercises suggested and I feel much better. Thanks!

Let me add to this, before stretching you should always warm up your body whether a light jog, jumping jacks, etc. Just like a cold rubber band, try stretching it. It's brittle and not flexible. So is your body. So I recommend warming up your body, and you will find stretching easier on your limbs and joints.

Awesome video. It would have been nice if you had a suit on so we could see ROM and which muscles are recruited to initiate the movements; a good example would be the scapular retraction to squeeze the pencil. Going back to Ironman NZ in 2018 and my swim coach says exactly what you say, it was priceless to see it and hear the explanations.

Learning to swim at 67 from not being able to run any longer. My ankles were so "runner-like" that, when I just used a kickboard, I went backwards initially. Nevertheless, thanks for the tips, I have gotten slightly more flexible. Still I am the slowest in the pool. So take heart! Anyone of you reading this can at least beat me.

My recommendation is to go to a chiropractor / physical therapist. They will show you what you need to improve your posture and give you very good exercises that target the right muscles. Also if you have skeletal issues like whiplash or scoliosis they can help adjust those too.

sit on your ankles like they showed.. after you can do that lift your knees off the ground and hold it there for like 30 seconds and kicking with a board in the pool helps in general too (remember to keep relaxed ankles)

If you can't flip turn yet, just try and do a "classical" breaststroke/fly turn. 1 - Done propperly you will lose only under half a second (or even less) compared to a flip; 2 - If you can't master the side streamline, push off the wall and dolphin kick from a classical turn then it'll be harder to learn a flip. 3 - Find a teacher to help you learn a flip (there are some tutorials here on youtube that might help).
@jerrycannon12058 жыл бұрын
Olympian? top five stretches? who wouldn't watch this!!! thanks!!
@diogoalmeida821112 жыл бұрын
have you tried, after a simple flip (with no twisting), pushing off the wall in backstroke (feet side by side at shoulder width and toes point upward) for a few times, and then gradually in each turn, trying to rotate so that your belly and feet point to the side of the pool (never mind the pushing off the wall at this time yet)?
@Yinzer80810 жыл бұрын
these stretches are all great but there is one flaw i believe... the last stretch they talk about raising the shoulder with the Lat and this is not true. The motion that causes shoulder elevation without using levator scapulae, trap, and delt would come from serratus anterior rotating scapula forward and putting rhomboids and lat in a stretched position to be the most efficient in creating a powerful stroke.
@Yinzer80810 жыл бұрын
sorry muscle* not motion*
@RealFunkhaus12 жыл бұрын
Yes, this stretching for 15-30 seconds will help flexibility. Hang as 'relaxed' as you can. Obviously, you should always do all stretching before you do your core/strength training for swim. Stretching aids flexibility Core/strength aids power Pool time aids endurance All these increase performance and reduce risk of injury

I'm a competitive swimmer, and have the same problem as you. But stil, I went to CiFSS finals. It's easy, there's one big rule in swimming : DON'T USE YOUR LEGS TOO MUCH (unless it's a sprint). Legs have big muscles, so they consume a lot of oxygen and as when you swim your legs aren't very efficient, it's a big effort for not a lot. Check out videos of guys like Yann Thorpe in long distances (/watch?v=EaneChQkX3w ).

As an NCAA swimmer: DON'T do that last one with the rotation and extension unless you've been swimming competitively for quite a while. Rotating there makes most triathletes and newer swimmers "cross over", which is when your hand pushes water on the opposite side of your body. Crossing over WILL injure your shoulders. If you do end up doing that one, make absolutely sure that your arms are out to the sides of your body when you pull, and not anywhere near your centerline.
@YourWellnessNerd3 жыл бұрын
Hope I can add to this conversation! Over the years, I've come to understand that there are some common foundational issues that set swimmers up for a myriad of different aches, pains, and injuries. These foundations are often hidden unless you go hunting for them but ultimately revolve around restrictions at the hip, shoulders, neck and low back above all else. I have a video with some effective stretches targeting these issues to decrease injury risk and improve swimming performance! kzbin.info/www/bejne/gmbcmKR-aNWdb6M

I thought I would add something to the principles of this video. If triathletes were told that climbing Mt. Everest without a sherpa or oxygen would make them faster, they would do it. However, they don't seem to want to do the simple basic things that will help them in the long run. It is fascinating to me even knowing that I have been a guilty party of this.

Flexibility does not make you weak. Tight muscles do not mean that you are strong either, in fact that actually makes you weaker because you are restricted in movement and you do not have the suppleness to do certain things.

Hi, I'm a regular guy and I want to be a guy that can swim, bike and run. I've been practicing my swimming technique but I am having a cramps on my legs - can you suggest or tell me what possibly wrong with my swimming practice.
@_w_a_t_e_r9 жыл бұрын
There is most likely nothing wrong with your swimming except your muscle tension. This has been happening to me recently when I practice butterfly; sometimes I get in the zone and go so fast that my muscles tense up from the excitement and pain, most likely the same happens to you. When this happens, the only thing you can do is get out of the pool and stretch the cal(ves)f by putting the toes against a wall and the heel on the ground and applying pressure while stretching: this will untie the knot by contracting muscles. If you stay in the pool, the muscles will continue to tighten because there is a kind of "Zero Gravity" effect. Definitely DO NOT try to swim with cramp, it's one of THE MOST painful experiences known humans on this planet, TRUST ME.
