Tom Branson was one of the more interesting characters in Downton. He had an integrity and authenticity equal to Lord Crawley himself, if for different issues and causes. He took up for those that needed it when necessary and took responsibility when he did wrong. He had that indefinable trait that is so unpopular nowadays, 'character'. I'm glad his story got a well-deserved happy ending.

I admit I didn’t like Tom at first. I was initially put off by his high handed ways with Sybil. Insisting she loved him when, at that time, I don’t think she actually did. And while I admired his good intentions in wanting social change, I disliked his prejudice against the aristocracy and hard-lined black and white way of looking at the world. However, that changed in subsequent seasons, most notably with his interactions and contrast to Miss Bunting. He matured, developed a wider world view, and I was genuinely sad when his character left for America. Glad to see him happy in love again.

The difference is that he can get married in an Anglican church. A similar thing happened with my grandparents in the 60s. The Catholic Church, my grandmother, belonged to would not allow her to marry someone who was not Catholic. Whereas my grandfather Church of England did allow it without forcing one to convert. My grandmother kept her faith. But the Catholic Church refused to acknowledge the marriage, and their children were seen as illegitimate in the eyes of the Church. My mother and her siblings were raised in both faiths, but all chose to convert to being C of E as adults. So to me this scene is very accurate.

I’m sad Tom wasn’t able to marry in a Catholic Church again

Tom would have been Able too. And it didn’t say he didn’t. Sybill was dead, so no laws of the church were broken.

Lol he gave up everything about his previous identity. Vacationing in South of France, living in Brompton, having a valet, and sitting in the great hall while the foot men serve..... ofc he would. Why struggle and change the world when you can live in luxury. He's the most hypocrite character.

@@harveyspecter1855 I don't think he's a hypocrite, its just he genuinely loves Sybil's family who accepted him despite his political beliefs. Who loved him despite his political beliefs. They didn't see him as their enemy. He began to realise they weren't pantomime villains parasitically drinking the blood of the poor, but that they were people with their own struggles. He's also intelligent enough to understand that estates like Downton and Bromton are working estates and require good management, since they're a major provider of employment for the area, not to mention food since their farms will be providing meat, milk, crops and eggs to the whole area. (No Tesco in the 20s) Tom straddled two worlds, and he came to see things are not black and white, oppressed vs oppressor. He himself admitted to struggling with the idea of Sybbie inheriting the villa since it was just for fun, and not a working estate. He came face to face with the people he thought were enemies and found it was more nuanced than that. As, indeed, life is. Sitting in a great hall whilst employing people who actually take pride in their work - work for which they've trained and are paid - perhaps today we might find "service" demeaning, but then it was part of the world. Yes, he had luxury, but I imagine he'd make a fair employer too. What was he meant to do? Burn Downton to the ground in protest? (He ran from Ireland for that) yes, he'd signal his virtue whilst destroying more working-class people's lives and incomes than the gentry. I like Tom. I like his evolution as a character. I think he might be the first person to worry about whether or not he was a hypocrite, living the life he lived, but again, life is full of these conundrums and moral questions.

This was a really boring storyline. He should have married the blonde chick that works for Edith. They also should have had Mary marry Charles Blake instead of the race car driver that is afraid to race cars. What about the Car business? It all fell apart with the movies.

The car business is doing fine in the first movie. In this one, it only gets a mention that Henry is off traveling because of it to explain his absence from the movie.

Good Tom finds a new love and happiness in his life, Lucy, who is suddenly taken by a mysterious illness and dies. Shortly before her funeral, a strange man claiming to be a doctor, and a professor arrives at Downton Abbey and request - much to the chagrin of of the Crowley's - that he be allowed to examine the body of Lucy, and informs the Crowley's that a vampire is at large in Downton Abbey, at which point, he is immediately laid hands upon and remanded to the nearest sanitarium forthwith.
