In South Africa you should never say "fork and knife" because it ends up sounding like "f***ing knife". We always say "knife and fork" instead. Thanks for your local perspective of Italy and your tips! They're awesome :)

May I say, on behalf of my country the US, I apologize for some many of the commenters down below. I really respect and enjoy your content as I am planning on going to Italy in about a year (marrying a full Sicilian New Yorker lol). We are not all close minded and many of us love to know more about how to respectfully enjoy another country and or culture. It almost brought me to tears to read the hateful and absurd and unnecessary comments. Anywhoo, love the tips. Keep them coming please! xo

Thank you very much for your words Darcy! :) Some people are not interested in other countries cultural rules and at the end it's fine as long as no one breaks the law. I still don't get why they get so upset if some people care though haha Sicily is stunning! You'll love it :)

I was kinda baffled when u said that in Italy you don't eat bread with olive oil at the restaurants! In Greece we always serve the bread with olive oil or butter and a lot of times the bread is served grilled, soaked in olive oil and spices and sometimes tomatoes on top! Anyway, lovely and informative video!

Yes! It's also the same thing in Spain and in Egypt. As well as a bottle of Balsamic vinegar. I would've sworn this would be a Mediterranean thing. How Italy doesn't do this is surprising. Maybe it's something only the Italians in Rome do not do?

I think it's to aid cleaning the palette to be honest. It's like authentic italian recipes, there's a standard and it's there for a reason --- doesn't mean people can't go off "script" so to speak, but they don't come up with very specific ingredients or methods for no logical reason at all.

I've spent a lot of time in Italia, 3 years on and off, specifically in and around Umbria/Tuscany and Perugia. I Had Pizza pre cut and shared between people many times, Had bread with oil at a restaurant, I have an Italian father but I speak English, Hand gestures have always been a part of my family comunication and I've never offended anyone using hand gestures in Italia, When entering shops I always greet in Italian and Ciao! when I leave, That's just basic manners and i always try to speak and learn from people around me. I drink wine whenever i want lol, I wear all my own clothes and what I'm comfortable wearing, Normally shorts and t shirt or vest and trainers. What I wear should not offend anyone, I Never entered a fountain, that would be quite unhygenic and embarrasing, respect the fountains people. Just my personal experience. The answer to really not offending anyone is the same all over the world, Be Tollerent, Be yourself, Be respectfull and embrace the culture. Ciao!

When I first traveled to Italy I had the pleasure of visiting Torino, Genoa and Savona and I never saw any Italians talking loudly or using exaggerated hand gestures. Actually it was quite the opposite; most Italians I encountered were very reserved, quiet and calm. I asked my Italian friend about this and she said the loud talking and wild hand movements are a stereotype and most Italians aren't like that. Another funny story is that during my time in Italy I fell in love with "espresso" but I found out that Italians don't say "espresso" when ordering it they say "cafe". So I started saying "cafe" at the coffee shop but the server would recognize I'm a tourist and would confirm with me by saying "espresso?" or show me the small cup and make sure it's what I want. And the same with sparkling water; I fell in love with "acqua frizzante" but when I would buy a bottle in the shops, the cashier would recognize I'm a tourist and would say something like, "You know this one has gas?". And I would say, "Yes, I prefer it!".
@silviaconsonni586

Exactly. The big hand gesture thing depends on the context. You don't see ordinary people in relaxed situations throwing hands at each other. Maybe, in traffic, you see hands going "YOUR CAR LIGHTS, SUMMER CHILD!!!".

Thank God. It seems really weird to me to be judged on my food combination choices by people working in restaurants. Dry bread is not appealing to me - I don't want bread without butter or at least something to spread on it. To me it seems very strange and rude for someone to judge me badly for that. So I'm glad to know that that's not something that all Italians would do.

I totally get your points but I do believe some of them were just simply biased for tourist. As an Indian our dressing sense, way of talking and behaviour is drastically different, we can't speak Italian greetings without sounding weird, our moms wear traditional clothing so if we visit Italy people are gonna laugh at our parents for their dressing sense or way of pronounciation or because they want freaky butter with bread because dry bread is not our taste? honestly, i love Italy but now I don't think i would suggest my parents to visit that place cause people will only frown on them for being themselves? My comment is not to disrespect you or Italians, I'm just conveying what i felt after watching this video.

Having been in Italia many times people are not easily offended, Infact I've only found in majority of people to be quiet and helpful people who only want to understand you. But of cause there are exceptions in every culture. People in Italia from my experience only want a person to not be an asshole about everything.

As a Roman fellow, I have to admit that I agree with you a hundred percent, which also makes me think of how extremely repressed we can be - compared to other western countries, but you’re right. We are REALLY concerned with the concept of “bella figura” and we’re judging a lot of people on that. But yes: no flip flops, do not bathe in the water fountains and most importantly: do not wear sweatpants everywhere you go. We don’t need to know how lazy you are. We all work our ass off and yes, we’re all tired, but dress appropriately and make an effort. Nobody likes a slouch.

Hey great vid! Haha when it comes to pizza, I've found some place do slice a pizza for you (and it seems almost more common if they think you're a foreigner) but most places don't.. Where I live, there's a Naples style pizzeria.. on their website when you want to order delivery, they have a section for special requests and at the top of the list is "sliced" haha... however when sitting there I've never seen anybody order a sliced pizza. I recently went for a pizza with an American and he was shocked that the pizzas were individual sized.. from his perspective (and other Americans I've spoken with), it was too small to share but too big to be a "personal" size I've been in situations where I've had two people speaking next to me speaking to each other about me "maybe he speaks english" "should we ask him if he knows where XYZ is" or I've even heard some foreigners in different countries (not just Italy) saying horrible things about the locals assuming nobody understands... it really is horrible... Haha wine with pizza may not be the most appropriate meaning, but haha what's worse is when you see people order Pasta alla Carbonara with an espresso, oh goodness... I've seen this too many times looking forward to the next vid :)

I had no idea! Only for the delivery pizza I hope... But it doesn't make sense to me because the pizza cools down faster if you slice it! Haha it's not that big come on! Plus the roman pizza is thinner, so it's way easier to eat an entire one on your own :D Yeah it happened to me too! That's why I thought it was a good idea to include it haha I swear if I worked in a restaurant I would kindly suggest my clients to not have pasta and espresso together... How can someone even think about mixing the two! Thanks for the detailed comment, I'm glad you enjoyed the video! :D

Well, the only bad thing that comes to my mind about drinking wine while eating pizza, is that wine could be not so good because many italians don't usually drink it at a pizzeria so they have a pretty basic choice of wine. I noticed that foreiners in general think italians drink wine a lot or that they can find good wine everywhere, but it's not always the case. I don't think someone is going to judge you because you want to drink wine with your pizza, most waiters really don't care, the only problem in this scenario is you will probably drink bad wine.

Cringe.. I live in Rome and this video is so misleading. Please don't listen to this condensanding advice from a snobby Italian. Okay, how not to act as an obnoxious tourist is pretty self explanatory, but the food related advice is a bit off. Some examples: They do slice your pizza at most pizzerias, unless it’s a Naples style pizza which is already too thin and can be easily cut with a fork. What she was referring to, is when ordering pizza at restaurants that’s where they don’t cut it for you. Also, asking for wine while eating pizza, oil with bread or anything for that matter is bs, do as you please. Nothing happens if you do these things and you will not be judged unless you’re on a date with Elisa.

3 years ago I was au pairing in Italy. I didn't know Italian at all when I first arrived but within a month I learned the language very quickly. For Finnish people speaking Italian is very easy, of course there are difficulties, especially with the grammar, but very soon I could speak Italian without an accent. But there was this one thing that bothered me a lot. It was almost impossible for me to use Italian in everyday life, because every single time I said something in Italian I get answered in English. And I don't even had a strong accent as I mentioned. This was the case if the sales person or waitress was young, maybe they wanted to improve their English, I don't know, but luckily older people spoke Italian to me. Even though this bothered me a lot I always spoke Italian even though people spoke me English, I don't know if that was considered rude or weird. But seriously how am I supposed to learn a language if I can't use it? Finally after four months I could get customer service in Italian and I was so happy! I talked about this with my au pair friends and they noticed the same thing. If here are Italians can you please explain me this if you can, thanks!

2 possible reasons: 1. Italians think that you're just trying to speak Italian out of courtesy, so they reply in English to avoid putting you in an uncomfortable position. 2. The Italian in question notices that you're struggling/messing up the grammar and/or he perceives a communication issue that makes the conversation more awkward than it needs to be. Unfortunately, many don't have the patience to deal with miscommunication.

As an Italian, I have to say that almost everything she said about food is totally bullshit. Just do what you want while being kind and everything will work fine. I put olive oil on bread everytime, people at a pizzeria won't mind slicing it for you, a lot of people drink wine with pizza and, as a sommelier myself, I can tell you plenty of wines that are just perfect with some kind of pizza. For the other points she's kinda right, but I think the only rules is: just be respectful and kind, things will work out perfectly fine. Keep coming to Italy and enjoy, we Italians can't appreciate our country as much as you do, so we need tourists. Thank you.

Quindi totally bullshit o kinda right? ___________________ [ENG VERSION] I've never met an Italian who goes to a restaurant, takes a slice of bread, drizzles oil on it and eats it. Sorry but you'll have to agree you're an exception... Same goes for the sliced up pizza. Do you know anyone that have their pizza sliced? For the wine is cool that there are some serious wine matches to go with pizza, but most time, the average person (not an expert or a sommelier) just gets beet with pizza, right? Anyway that's the most flexible, you're right. AND PLEASE don't misunderstand my videos, I LOVE tourists and I'm super proud that they're coming to Rome. These videos are just cultural insights for those who care about them!

I think if you could imagine a 30+ year old, life long pizza eater from North America- who has never ever had a pizza arrive at my table once that I had to slice myself with a knife and fork- you might understand why a tourist would ask kitchen/waiter to slice it. Of course I’m capable of slicing it myself- but compared to where I’m from, it just seems like the kitchen didn’t complete their job- But now I know when I get to Italy that it is in fact, my job to slice it myself. Are the Americans that call themself "ugly Americans". It's an expression that started to be used in the late '40 early '50s, when US newspapers started to point out the behaviour of American tourists in Cuba (at the same time, US tourists were quite welcomed in Europe, because, ugly or not, there was a huge difference in average income between US and Europe, so they tended to spend ridiculous amounts of money). Today American tourists are not that bad. They tend to be loud in a likeable way, and the "professional golfer on acid" that doesn't understand that, out of the US, uses can be different, is an almost extint species.

While we are sharing manners, you want to be CAREFUL about using that word "friggin'" or "freakin'," especially around older people. It's a milder version of a crude term that refers to having sex, which young people here are using way too often. There are certain cultures within the U.S. where that term is not acceptable in ANY form. What most Americans themselves don't know is that the dirtier term it represents stands for "Fornication Under Command of the King." At once time royalty were permitted to rape young brides before marriage, which is why it is such an insult. The movie "Braveheart" refers to this.

Hi! I'll be visiting Rome in a few days. Are Italians more open to Spanish than English? My parents don't really speak English and I wanna know if it's better for them to communicate in Spanish. Thanks for the tips.

No. Why would you expect italians to speak Spanish? They would never expect Spaniards to speak Italian. Get some basic Italian knowledge or try English.

Buon giorno, ho una domanda: cuando uno viaggia a Italia, se la persona non parla Italiano, e migliore parlare Inglese, o Spagnolo? Io parlo Spagnolo, e me face piu similar al Italiano. Thanks for listening, and pardon my broken Italiano. Your videos are great and fun. Cheers, from Los Angeles, CA.

The Spanish language has many similarities to Italian, but Italian has nuances all of its own. I'm English but also speak a little Italian and a little Spanish. A Spanish person will be understood just as much as an English speaking person in my experience.

Perfect example of cultural differences, how your own way of letting people know what is classed as normal and exceptable in your country comes across as rude and bossy to others. I understand that you are just trying to be helpful but the 'don't don't don't approach you take towards your dialogue does make you sounds very opinionated For myself I am happy to learn something from these clips but I see where others peoples' comments are coming from. :).

Sandra, anyone with half a brain sees where she's coming from, so I don't think that's a very good excuse for their BLATANT rudeness.
