I was kinda baffled when u said that in Italy you don't eat bread with olive oil at the restaurants! In Greece we always serve the bread with olive oil or butter and a lot of times the bread is served grilled, soaked in olive oil and spices and sometimes tomatoes on top! Anyway, lovely and informative video!

Yes! It's also the same thing in Spain and in Egypt. As well as a bottle of Balsamic vinegar. I would've sworn this would be a Mediterranean thing. How Italy doesn't do this is surprising. Maybe it's something only the Italians in Rome do not do?

I think it's to aid cleaning the palette to be honest. It's like authentic italian recipes, there's a standard and it's there for a reason --- doesn't mean people can't go off "script" so to speak, but they don't come up with very specific ingredients or methods for no logical reason at all.

I've spent a lot of time in Italia, 3 years on and off, specifically in and around Umbria/Tuscany and Perugia. I Had Pizza pre cut and shared between people many times, Had bread with oil at a restaurant, I have an Italian father but I speak English, Hand gestures have always been a part of my family comunication and I've never offended anyone using hand gestures in Italia, When entering shops I always greet in Italian and Ciao! when I leave, That's just basic manners and i always try to speak and learn from people around me. I drink wine whenever i want lol, I wear all my own clothes and what I'm comfortable wearing, Normally shorts and t shirt or vest and trainers. What I wear should not offend anyone, I Never entered a fountain, that would be quite unhygenic and embarrasing, respect the fountains people. Just my personal experience. The answer to really not offending anyone is the same all over the world, Be Tollerent, Be yourself, Be respectfull and embrace the culture. Ciao!

When I first traveled to Italy I had the pleasure of visiting Torino, Genoa and Savona and I never saw any Italians talking loudly or using exaggerated hand gestures. Actually it was quite the opposite; most Italians I encountered were very reserved, quiet and calm. I asked my Italian friend about this and she said the loud talking and wild hand movements are a stereotype and most Italians aren't like that. Another funny story is that during my time in Italy I fell in love with "espresso" but I found out that Italians don't say "espresso" when ordering it they say "cafe". So I started saying "cafe" at the coffee shop but the server would recognize I'm a tourist and would confirm with me by saying "espresso?" or show me the small cup and make sure it's what I want. And the same with sparkling water; I fell in love with "acqua frizzante" but when I would buy a bottle in the shops, the cashier would recognize I'm a tourist and would say something like, "You know this one has gas?". And I would say, "Yes, I prefer it!".
@silviaconsonni5868 ай бұрын
Exactly. The big hand gesture thing depends on the context. You don't see ordinary people in relaxed situations throwing hands at each other. Maybe, in traffic, you see hands going "YOUR CAR LIGHTS, SUMMER CHILD!!!".

Hey great vid! Haha when it comes to pizza, I've found some place do slice a pizza for you (and it seems almost more common if they think you're a foreigner) but most places don't.. Where I live, there's a Naples style pizzeria.. on their website when you want to order delivery, they have a section for special requests and at the top of the list is "sliced" haha... however when sitting there I've never seen anybody order a sliced pizza. I recently went for a pizza with an American and he was shocked that the pizzas were individual sized.. from his perspective (and other Americans I've spoken with), it was too small to share but too big to be a "personal" size I've been in situations where I've had two people speaking next to me speaking to each other about me "maybe he speaks english" "should we ask him if he knows where XYZ is" or I've even heard some foreigners in different countries (not just Italy) saying horrible things about the locals assuming nobody understands... it really is horrible... Haha wine with pizza may not be the most appropriate meaning, but haha what's worse is when you see people order Pasta alla Carbonara with an espresso, oh goodness... I've seen this too many times looking forward to the next vid :)
@RomeInside6 жыл бұрын
I had no idea! Only for the delivery pizza I hope... But it doesn't make sense to me because the pizza cools down faster if you slice it! Haha it's not that big come on! Plus the roman pizza is thinner, so it's way easier to eat an entire one on your own :D Yeah it happened to me too! That's why I thought it was a good idea to include it haha I swear if I worked in a restaurant I would kindly suggest my clients to not have pasta and espresso together... How can someone even think about mixing the two! Thanks for the detailed comment, I'm glad you enjoyed the video! :D

Buon giorno, ho una domanda: cuando uno viaggia a Italia, se la persona non parla Italiano, e migliore parlare Inglese, o Spagnolo? Io parlo Spagnolo, e me face piu similar al Italiano. Thanks for listening, and pardon my broken Italiano. Your videos are great and fun. Cheers, from Los Angeles, CA.
@FilGee1003 жыл бұрын
The Spanish language has many similarities to Italian, but Italian has nuances all of its own. I'm English but also speak a little Italian and a little Spanish. A Spanish person will be understood just as much as an English speaking person in my experience.

I totally get your points but I do believe some of them were just simply biased for tourist. As an Indian our dressing sense, way of talking and behaviour is drastically different, we can't speak Italian greetings without sounding weird, our moms wear traditional clothing so if we visit Italy people are gonna laugh at our parents for their dressing sense or way of pronounciation or because they want freaky butter with bread because dry bread is not our taste? honestly, i love Italy but now I don't think i would suggest my parents to visit that place cause people will only frown on them for being themselves? My comment is not to disrespect you or Italians, I'm just conveying what i felt after watching this video.

You are right. If a country cannot respect that we are not natives then they don't deserve our tourist money.
@ashimaseth68005 жыл бұрын
@@tweetiepie551 I agree.. it's not even about certain rules and regulations. This are just some biased judgements tourist would have to suffer for not being local. I have always loved Italy but if this is how ppl are gonna behave if I visit then I would spent my money on a place where I can enjoy my time judgement free. India is a place of tourist interest so basically we are extremely polite and genuine with our tourist. We don't even judge them for wanting certain things lmao. How can you judge a person for sharing pizza or wanting to wear white socks is baffling to me. No hard feelings to anyone.

@@ashimaseth6800 I've been to Italy several times,in several towns and cities, and yes this is how they are.the older women especially, they can be very rude and aggressive both verbally and physically.a favourite tactic is to wait until you pass them and then they cross your path behind you shoving you forward. After several assaults like this I froze two 2 litre bottles of water and carried the ice blocks in my backpack. Several women got their painful reward for attempting to shove me over.

@@tweetiepie551 Man that sounds extremely terrible. How can this old ladies act like little kids. This makes me feel like they all lack in manners department. I saw one video by this girl talking about Italians not being rude but was easily able to find someone not wearing sandals in temples weird. This is not how everything works God damn. They should mind their God damn business rather than commenting on others. I feel sorry for you getting this rough treatment. You should visit India. They are actually polite unlike this ones.

@@ashimaseth6800 I encountered a really nasty one on a water taxi in Venice last week. She was sitting in the seats reserved for the old, pregnant and injured. I have several pelvic and leg injuries and could barely walk, she spent the entire ride yelling in my face to move and stand. It seems that the younger are judgmental and the old are just plain mean. Yes I've found Indians to be polite and helpful in my country, I am from Scotland and we judge only the people without respect for others.

When I travel, it’s all about what I can afford and what I can carry: a small backpack. That means I wear my only pair of shoes: sandals. When my feet get cold, I put on my only pair of socks, and I’m so glad I have them with me. When you visit my country, wear what you want and eat what you want however you want to eat it. Unless you are very rude, we will help you...in English...because we have no other language skills, unfortunately.

As a Roman fellow, I have to admit that I agree with you a hundred percent, which also makes me think of how extremely repressed we can be - compared to other western countries, but you’re right. We are REALLY concerned with the concept of “bella figura” and we’re judging a lot of people on that. But yes: no flip flops, do not bathe in the water fountains and most importantly: do not wear sweatpants everywhere you go. We don’t need to know how lazy you are. We all work our ass off and yes, we’re all tired, but dress appropriately and make an effort. Nobody likes a slouch.

I think if you could imagine a 30+ year old, life long pizza eater from North America- who has never ever had a pizza arrive at my table once that I had to slice myself with a knife and fork- you might understand why a tourist would ask kitchen/waiter to slice it. Of course I’m capable of slicing it myself- but compared to where I’m from, it just seems like the kitchen didn’t complete their job- But now I know when I get to Italy that it is in fact, my job to slice it myself. And I will, happily, to devour the delicious amazing wonderful pizza that awaits me.

3 years ago I was au pairing in Italy. I didn't know Italian at all when I first arrived but within a month I learned the language very quickly. For Finnish people speaking Italian is very easy, of course there are difficulties, especially with the grammar, but very soon I could speak Italian without an accent. But there was this one thing that bothered me a lot. It was almost impossible for me to use Italian in everyday life, because every single time I said something in Italian I get answered in English. And I don't even had a strong accent as I mentioned. This was the case if the sales person or waitress was young, maybe they wanted to improve their English, I don't know, but luckily older people spoke Italian to me. Even though this bothered me a lot I always spoke Italian even though people spoke me English, I don't know if that was considered rude or weird. But seriously how am I supposed to learn a language if I can't use it? Finally after four months I could get customer service in Italian and I was so happy! I talked about this with my au pair friends and they noticed the same thing. If here are Italians can you please explain me this if you can, thanks!

@yeah36012 жыл бұрын
2 possible reasons: 1. Italians think that you're just trying to speak Italian out of courtesy, so they reply in English to avoid putting you in an uncomfortable position. 2. The Italian in question notices that you're struggling/messing up the grammar and/or he perceives a communication issue that makes the conversation more awkward than it needs to be. Unfortunately, many don't have the patience to deal with miscommunication.

Si italians assume that everyone who is not italian will do and must do everything like italians do. There is one problem: Many people are NOT italian and they don't behave like italians. To be accepted and be bella figura they must do things like italians. But they are not brutta figura, it is more simple: they are not italians. Except for things like saying or doing something that is disrespectful, of course, I don't understand what 's the problem with that. ¡It's reality!

Having been in Italia many times people are not easily offended, Infact I've only found in majority of people to be quiet and helpful people who only want to understand you. Cringe.. I live in Rome and this video is so misleading. Please don't listen to this condensanding advice from a snobby Italian. Okay, how not to act as an obnoxious tourist is pretty self explanatory, but the food related advice is a bit off. Some examples: They do slice your pizza at most pizzerias, unless it’s a Naples style pizza which is already too thin and can be easily cut with a fork. What she was referring to, is when ordering pizza at restaurants that’s where they don’t cut it for you. Also, asking for wine while eating pizza, oil with bread or anything for that matter is bs, do as you please. Nothing happens if you do these things and you will not be judged unless you’re on a date with Elisa.

So if I get a seafood pasta I'll get some sort of fish dish as a secound corse and with these you order white wine. On the opposite, if my meal is meat based I'll go with a red wine.
