I won a Butlin's talent competition playing this on a tin whistle in 1964 accompanied by a resident pianist who happened to know the tune. After that I was more interested in the piano. I'm 67 now. I didn't win any competitions since, but I do play this piece on keyboards whenever I get the chance and the audience is locked in the hall. HA! Billy Butlin sent me a Butlin's Annual and me and my Mum got a few free nights out of the whole experience. Great Days.

Ronald Binge wrote this in 1950, it was originally called "Andante Cantabile", it was first played by the Mantovani orchestra and first heard on the radio in 1951. He renamed it in 1952 the Elizabethan Serenade on the accession of her late Majesty in 1952..

Snap, I too was a child back then and like you am now in my 70's. I was watching Murder in Paradise reruns on my PC and in the background there was a haunting tune reminiscent of this, I just could not place it, so I googled tune finder apps found one and tried it, I am no singer and there are no words, and do be do Da did not hack it, fortunately I found another App that recognises humming off I went and bingo,, It was Elizabethan Reggae, it was brilliant, but I knew it was not the orchestral version but KZbin did the honours and here I am. I have now saved the tune in my KZbin favourites. I have heard this over the decades as backing tracks, adverts, I do believe it was played ,, was it called the interlude,, when the BBC was not on air for some reason? Anyhow this has led me to look for more oldies of that era for sure! If you really do like this try Andre Rieu & The Johann Strauss Orchestra - " Elizabethan Serenade" it really is good.

This reminds me of chipmunks frolicking in the snow, orchestrating their own whimsical ballet. The orchestra's lively melody mirror their playful antics, creating a harmonious winter wonderland. The music dances like tiny pawprints on fresh snow, evoking a heartwarming scene that celebrates nature's joyous symphony.

You need to listen to a lot of "classical" music from the s. XX to be able to affirm that.

@@Tungusqa As it was written in the early 1950s, it is a contemporary piece. Define the time frame s. XX and let me know of a more pastoral, lilting piece of music from that time period. Music is subjective. This piece of music in my opinion is the best contemporary classical tune written.
