Bill probably shouldn't have brought up Aziz Ansari without all the facts. The truth is, Aziz has been laying low since the accusation came out, but his show wasn't cancelled, although it hasn't been renewed yet either. To be fair, Aziz already said last year that he's wanted to wait a bit before making any more episodes. Also, I don't recall hearing that he's lost any roles or gigs because of it. I think Ronan's right that after the allegation came out, most people discussed it and pretty much decided that, while he may be a bad date, he's not a predator. If anything, it sparked a conversation regarding dating behavior communication, consent and the responsibilities of both parties.

I thought the “reporter” that wrote the story was highly irresponsible. I think the woman was confused. She had a bad date where she felt pressure to have sex. The reporter should’ve seen the story for what it was: a bad date where both parties messed up. She should have either not published it or told it in terms that addressed it properly. Men need to do better at understanding what is appropriate behavior on a date. Women need to learn to be forthcoming about what they do or don’t want. BTW, Ansari hid for a while but he’s back out in public. It seems he’s been embarrassed but not really hurt by the accusations.

Without expressly saying so he seems to have embodied the reasonable version of being PC, i.e. treating people with respect (good thing) and not calling for it's use as a new weapon to bully others (bad thing) whilst also acknowledging that part of the issue about less troubling people being swept up in the controversy comes from the years of pent up frustrations that nothing was done before.

This is a good point. Why do we need to be the "leader of the free world"? Let's mind our own business and not concern with other countries. As President John Quincy Adams said in 1821 "She [America] goes not abroad, in search of monsters to destroy. She is the well-wisher to the freedom and independence of all. She is the champion and vindicator only of her own.” Let's be like that.

The Romans also forced those barbarians they conquered to assimilate to their culture and forget their roots and religions. If you didn't conform, you were treated as a second class citizen. Sound familiar? They conquered by force and tried to destroy everything that made these people who they were. There is strength in diversity. There is also weakness in diversity "under the illusion of diversity." This constant labeling of gender, race, ethnicity for everything, stuck into every headline is also as big a part of the problem as bombing countries and then refusing their refugees, or treating those refugees as unwelcome/unwilling to give them time to assimilate and adapt. It usually happens within 1 generation, but don't tell trumpets/GOPoopers that.

New Message What a childish, half-witted remark. Which in its time was perhaps funny for the international audience, but even then its content was just not true. Every German school kid is taught several years about the Second World War and the Holocaust than anyone else in the world. As a German, I am always willing to talk about these catastrophic 12 years of our country. However, I don't have the patience to do this with someone who gets most of his historical and political education from British and American pop culture. This ignorance abou real historical events and not getting to the right conclusions for themselves but fingerpointing to others for decades is one of the reasons why America has now to deal with a President Trump and Britain is doing a Brexit. I hope international viewers will not do the same lame and stupid jokes about that in the coming 70 years... Otherwise, Karma is a bitch, baby... LOL

+ArmAd Spengler I think you're misunderstanding the Basil Fawlty "Don't mention the war" line. The joke was on Fawlty for constantly bringing the war up to a bunch of German guests at his hotel, who had nothing to do with it, several decades after it had ended. He's sending up a certain type of Brit who can't help making dumb stereotypes about other countries. That's why it's funny.
@armadspengler27176 жыл бұрын
MrDragon1968 In my experience as a German, people familiar with this joke bring it up in a conversation to make fun of the German unease about the war guilt and the mass murder in the Holocaust. Just remember how the German guest are actually freaking out in Fawlty Towers when he mentions the war... Your reasoning is far too sophisticated and complicated for most of the audience of this old television series. So I think I understand the joke as it is understood by 99 percent of the international audience then and now and it is actually exactly how it is used here by the commentator above as a means to transfer this impression of guilt to today's Germany, over 70 years later.

30stmFantasy woody allen, frank sinatra, an alien?
@SWLinPHX6 жыл бұрын
30stmFantasy: I always insisted that he had to be Sinatra’s son too, because considering the circumstances and his uncanny resemblance how could he NOT be? But then I got to thinking: first of all he does look like Mia very much. Secondly, Ronan does not care for Woody Allen because of the molestation allegations and other things against his sister, and his mother’s feelings about Allen. Therefore, if Ronan really KNEW he wasn’t Woody’s son and WAS Sinatra’s, he would have no problem admitting it. So he must know that he is Woody’s son but enjoys people assuming he must be Frank’s. Mia probably enjoys it too, just to spite Allen.

Good logic. A little mystery is always interesting. I had exactly the same first thought but for my second, I went to his intellect thinking Woody is probably smarter than Sinatra. But who knows, maybe he got his brains from Mia. ;) It makes sense that if he's angry at Woody, he wouldn't give him the satisfaction of telling us.

30stmFantasy: Mia probably noticed the resemblance and since her relationship with Sinatra is well known deliberately dropped that teaser breadcrumb that she knew the media would pick up on. She is not innocent and has been known to be very manipulative and vindictive.

why doesn't this smart young man Ronan Farrow run for president? he would do great!!
@calvinsaxon58226 жыл бұрын
Farrow says in regards to media reporting on high-profile harassments, people have the ability to use measured judgment to determine the degree of each case on its own merits...That's pretty naive. The media holds an inordinate power to convict in the court of public opinion, and emotionally-charged issues like harassment would compound the clouding of judgment that has resulted. I think Maher made a good point that Farrow dropped the ball on, appealing to some mythical "guiding hand" of public opinion which miraculously regulates people's judgments on this one issue, but, let's be real, on few others, if any? He's clearly projecting his own measured judgment onto others who, sorry, don't have it. This is one of the greatest fallacies that intelligent people commit--presuming good judgment in others, even far beyond the point when sufficient evidence has been presented that they are lacking it.

There is no doubt that Ronan Farrow is the sone of Woody Allen.. He can deny it, but his looks, facial features, and intelligence say otherwise..

Why is it that I never -- I mean _never_ -- hear conservatives speaking intelligently like this? Are they afraid of offending their base? Is it simply counter to their agenda? How could there not be any conservatives around who are brave enough, honest enough and intelligent enough to present themselves in a public setting as sane, articulate adults?

It seems to me that so far Trump had more success on foreign affairs than Obama. And Hillary was about to directly attack Russian forces in Syria. Your statement is pretty ignorant. The sad truth is that America has pretty much no choice at this point ... if you let go of your world domination, someone else will fill that void immediately. And when given the choice, I still prefer an American world before a Chinese or Russian on; even with all the mistakes you made.
