I think this issue is a wake up call, a learning curve if you will, I have the Rhino Tradie installed on my ute too, after all it's called tradie which conjures images of heavy duty use. Well done for manning up and taking the issue head on and using the platform to highlight the shortcomings of the product and to give Tyler credit for his warnings, well done guys.
Its been an interesting day! I have more than a few items to address, all those about in particular the Roof Rack and the 1.5 / load for off-roading. Without getting into this right here and now I'll be doing a follow up video about this specific topic and what I'm going to do about the issue I now have. I have also been in contact with Tyler via IG message. The coming week is going to be interesting to say the least. Stay tuned and watch this space. Cheers Ronny

Watching Tyler Thompson’s last video of his roof rack and ‘off road load ratings’ that 79kg is possibly over weight. His roof rack broke off the roof with only a 55kg tent on the roof. And rhino wouldn’t cover because it was overweight.
@thomasDLC4 жыл бұрын
I was thinking the same thing. I wonder if the backbone system allows more weight?
@tomring95334 жыл бұрын
Definately agree. I purchased the same system recently and then discovered the “off-road load limit”. The hilux roof has a 100kg weight limit. To calculate the off-road limit you do the following. 100kg divide by 1.5 = 66kg total weight on top of roof. Then you must remove the weight of the rack itself to find the leftover for gear and accessories. Rack weighs approx 27kg. 66kg - 27kg= total leftover capacity for accessories. Leaving you with only 39kg 😖 The ford ranger is even worse with only 26kg capacity leftover. Be careful as rhino will not cover under warranty if over weight.

Lots of comments on here Ronny about the weight you can legally carry on your vehicle's roof (both on-road and off-road). You've got a great channel and your subscribers put a lot of faith in your advice. This roof rack thing though is a very big issue because we see so many people with a lot of gear up top. I guess there are a few people out there who are just going to load up their racks whether they're aware of load limits or not but in my experience roof platform manufacturers and retailers are not being upfront with clear and full disclosure about weight limits. Sure this stuff is in the fine print but is that enough? Things can go very wrong if a roof rack comes off at speed. Time to call this out before somebody is seriously hurt.

@chrisl29154 жыл бұрын
Rivets? Sooner or later that rack is going to rip the rivets out and the rack is going to fly off. Suggest to bolt it on with plates on the inside under the rooflining. Vibration from corrugations and off road driving will work the rivets loose. Wind buffetting from highway driving and shock load when passing trucks going in opposite direction will eventually rip the rivets out. Check the on vs offroad load ratings before loading.

@sumodaze21984 жыл бұрын
I actually unsubbed Tyler over it. His constant whinging when it was his own fault put me off bigtime. Anybody with half a brain would realise that load ratings change offroad, the forces applied to items on the roof when bouncing over corrugations and ruts are extremely different than driving along a smooth road, and he cant seem to get that through his head. The load ratings Rhino give, are purely based of the Manufacturers ratings. It wasnt the rack that let him down, it was the way it was mounted and overloaded.
@markp46684 жыл бұрын
@@sumodaze2198 Hmm each to there own I guess. It makes sense that there is an off road limit but I will admit that I didn't think it would be so low. I don't see him whinging just making the issue more broadly known. I guess with Ronny and Tyler discussing it. it hopefully will become common knowledge. I wish both blokes well with their channels and life in general.
@sumodaze21984 жыл бұрын
The offroad rating is just a guideline as it changes depending on terrain. IE your rack can handle more weight on firetrails then it would bouncing up a rutted out rocky 4x4 track. So Rhino make it so low to cover every scenario. The issue comes down to the mounting, not the actual rack. Majority of vehicles with Rhino mounting will be fine offroad with much higher weights than what Rhino say, but some (like Tylers navara) would require a different mounting system if you want to load it up over the limits. Rivets through thin sheet metal, no matter the rack, will pull through in certain situations when overloaded.

Hey Ronny, great info there with weights and pricing. It was about 30KG heavier than I would of guessed. Make sure you don't loose your way on this lightweight build. I would leave some of those Maxtracks off and also not plan on this being a towing car. If you need to tow, take the Cruiser. Being a light weight 4wd you will get stuck less, remember 6 tracks is what you carry for the cruiser. I carry only two tracks in the 3.4t Patrol and rarely use them but when required they still work. You also never(rarely) travel alone, borrow tracks from your travelling buddy if required. That awning is great but I'm not a fan of the privacy shower tent. Just get a pop-up version and stick it out of the way at your camp, then you can store it lower and it doesn't hinder the use of car doors. Remember! - Lightweight means compromise and not always easy. Also one smaller light bar would have done the job, not as bright but does the job! The Hilux is starting to look like an ad for every mod you can buy. A discreet light bar under or in front of rack will be harder to notice and look stealth. Marty

Thanks for the update Ronny. Not sure if i misinterpreted, but I dont understand how a rack with limited places to tie down (using slat tracks and eyelets) is more flexible in terms of positioning than the security mesh style with significantly more options. I've got the same rhino rack and have no plans to change, but can't deny the quick fine tuning you could do on a mesh rack without shifting eyelets in tracks. The slats look a lot better but i do wish they had some of the practicality of a mesh rack.

Three roof rack videos within a week of each other. Two (Tim Bates & Tyler Thompson) not sponsored by Rhino, step through the load rating calculators and limits very objectively. One of them (Tyler) gets a very legalistic letter from Rhino telling him it his his fault his rack came off as he surpassed the off road rating with an off-road load that is less than what Ronny currently has. I feel for Ronny here, as he has released this content in good faith, trying to keep the manufacturer happy, and continuing this great series about the Hilux build. The key issue to me is not whether Ronny has inadvertently exceeded the off-road rating limit, but whether Rhino will allow their product to be promoted, via this video, if in fact the limit has been exceeded? If they’ve sponsored the content, is it false advertising?

Ronny...dunno if you're interested, but I'll tell you anyway. After watching your video about the benefits of roof-mounted UHF antenna, I went ahead and mounted mine similar to yours. However, having to get out and put it down all the time when there is a low branch etc was becoming a pain in the arse.... Fortunately, I have a complete on-board air system that is always full (Endless Air compressor and 9kg LPG bottle as a tank). So, I've devised a modification to my fold-up antenna bracket... I've removed the spring loaded locking pin and have added a small bracket to the side of the base bracket. This then has a "johnny joint" attached and then a small air ram, controlled by a 5/2 air solenoid. The solenoid is, in turn, controlled by the same 12 volt feed that I use to turn the UHF on/off. So, when I see a low branch, carport, shopping carpark etc, I just flip the switch....it turns the radio off AND lowers the UHF antenna.

It's a nice system and I can add on all manner of accessories if I want to, again, same as the rhino.

whether you have a 5 door cruiser or 70 series ute to a hilux, you might want to consider a 6-8 point welded exoskeleton roll bar this will give you the most fitting space for storage i don't believe in using rain channel guides as a secure fixture..

Interesting But, If you’d put a canopy on instead of a rack and that flat rear tub cover you would’ve saved a lot of money, weight and fuel. You could’ve had your maxtrax on either side to save climbing up and that would be a lot safer too. Also the weight would’ve been lower. But it mightn’t have looked as cool. And let’s face it, you are going for looks rather than function. Good work though. A couple of cross bars would’ve held your awning and lights.

I have this rack and am looking at the ladder that fits on to it. Having a lift and trying to put stuff on and take it off is a complete pia. You end up standing on sidesteps or wheels and struggling with everything. A ute would be easier if you can stand in the tray but if it is wet or muddy it would be very easy to slip off. Won't be going with the ladder mount as it is just more weight and wind resistance. The more you check into these things and their limitations the more that I think that they don't offer a lot in the way of functionality for the price in a lot of cases.

nice video, but agree with comments below, only bit missed out was weight limits and that is the most important part. need to inform people of weight limitations, they are written on instruction install manuals....there seems to be a miss guided view (below and in Tylers content and no i don't work for rhinorack !) of Rhino rack that they can't take the weight, thats not the issue. Doesn't matter what make of rack you fit or how much weight they can hold, the starting point is the weight allowance for the vehicle, not the rack. Most vehicles are around the 100kg max dynamic allowance on sealed roads, that is your starting weight and work down from that, take a safety factor of x1.5 for off road, weight of rack etc and you are left with around 45-55kg. Before you spend $2k, ask the questions, or you may have an expensive accident like many that have had with racks falling off when off road ! Ronny, I'm not an expert on this, i just read the instructions and may have missed something, so if you have contacts/sponsors at RhinoRack, maybe they can do a follow up with you to inform people of this, before more racks fall off due to being overloaded !!

I thought the Roof Load Limit ( according to Toyota ) on a Hilux was only 75kg. This would mean You have already over loaded it. So if You stay within recomended load limits roof racks are pretty expensive way to carry a couple of items.

If I remove two Maxtrax I’m all good by 2.5 kg. Toyota always over engineer stuff so being over by 5kg I’m sure won’t hurt. Engineers never tell you the absolute limit

Mistakes happen. I know quite a few people who have been around the traps for a long time. And have never known about the reduced weights when off-road. I found out when buying heavy duty bars for work. When I got the bars out they stated on the sticker. 80kg on road 50 kg off-road followed by check vehicles roof load limits before fitment of this product. Turns out manufacturers do indeed state safe load limits for off-road driving as well on road. I now use a front runner rack system it also clearly states safe load limits. For off-road use. So just chill people till Ronnie gets back to us what he learns. He has never been one to shy away from telling the hard truth be it when he’s right or when he’s wrong. Mistakes happen. How many of you out there can say truthfully that if your vehicle was to be thoroughly inspected tomorrow all those suspension lifts ,large tyres and mods would pass. All the west aussies on here who have lifted there vehicles above 50mm as measured at roof height are all running unroadworthy cars unless it’s been pit inspected and signed off by an engineer. Just because you can buy it or have it installed doesn’t mean it’s legal or safe to use.
@morpheus25734 жыл бұрын
Fair play to you, Ross. Yes, mistakes happen. But so far, Ronny hasn’t admitted to making one. So far his initial response has been, ‘Tyler must’ve installed it incorrectly, there’s nothing wrong with pop rivets for this purpose because they use them in spaceships, it’s OK to overload your racks & under engineer your load until an accident occurs, & a bunch of other ill-conceived, irresponsible rubbish. As to your assumption that everyone runs illegal mods... don’t judge everyone by your own low standards. We’re not all cowboy yahoo’s out here. A lot of folks go to a lot of effort & expense to do the research & colour between the lines out of respect for the safety & wellbeing of others. Hopefully Ronny will go away, do his research & come back with a safer, less sponsorship-aware approach for others to learn from. Let’s see. 🤞
@rossrhodes19634 жыл бұрын
@@morpheus2573 i made my statement after Ronnie had admitted that he needs to look into this more. And that he hadn't read all of Tyler's intial statement properly. And that he had spoken to Tyler about the issue. I was asking a question of people if really looked at their vehicle would it pass a proper inspection. I know alot of people do loads of research into modifying their vehicles and getting them inspected and passed. I know people who just go ahead and put what they want on or remove things that shouldn't be removed. My vehicle has been over the puts twice now. And since getting rid of the tub and changing to a full canopy setup now requires another pit inspection. For registration and insurance. Why is what I said low standards anyway.

It’s used only a small amount of time so I’ve found it’s a great option if regularly carry items on the roof is not something you do often. Saves on fuel and cuts down noise when not in use. I know the tracks are the same as the ‘track bolts’ are the same. Just wondering if you looked at the difference with the bar ‘direction’ and if that was part of the discussion as to go with the Rhino version?? When touring the swags go up over the solar and the DC/DC charger does the work whilst driving
