Notice how this old truck doesn't even have tail lights? That's probably because it doesn't even have working brakes. Not knocking the farmer. It's more a sign of our economy, and what people have to do to try to get by. I've worked around a ton of farm trucks like this one (or older) here in the Eastern Oregon area. Most of the ones around here have a quart or two of brake fluid, and several quarts of oil on the passenger floorboard, so they can add some at every stop...if it stops. It's amazing the risks that farmers take with some of this old worn out equipment just to survive and put food on the table.

Your heart has to break for the guy busting his butt to make a living, using old worn out stuff, and probably least able to afford the break down or loss of the truck during harvest time. I'm a farmer myself, though on a big farm with over 6000 slaughter pigs and 600ha total of fields. We have mostly new machines and tractors but the older stuff are still on our farm. All new stuff has computer which means one day one sensor or something crappy will fail and you won't use the whole thing, because one sensor is down. Old things ain't like that. You can fix it with some welding or just chain stuff like crazy and it'll do the job for that day. Farmers mostly will afford the costs of maintenance but I'll tell ya both large scale and smaller scale farms wants to cut down on something to save money. Farmers are clever, most of us are. Very few just works for the money and not for the love of what they do. Most of us do love what we do and therefore will come up with some cheaper repairs on the spot to get home or get done for the day.

Its like watching Ron v's Trent! lol Ron always pays attention to how his hooks are positioned (Point away from the truck, pull into the throat etc), Trent doesn't. However, Tent always tightens his tie down chains using the tilt on the wheel lift, Ron didn't in this video and they tightened on their own when the truck slides slightly. Both get the job done safely, just interesting to see how they do it.

I thought the same way. It was an easy tow with little fuss and materials used. Give the man a free tow and put his tires back on at not cost and let him continue to earn best as he can. Farmers need all the breaks they can get.

A lovely idea and I would want to do the same. I have spent many years repairing vehicles and the "poor" farmers are the least likely to accept any gifts. I found to my cost that these people are very proud and to offer them a freebie or even a discount upsets them. "do you think I can't pay you"? is the response. I lost several customers by trying to be kind and I also found that some customers who lived like this farmer were in fact quite wealthy. Everything about this farmer's manner suggests that he will pay his bill and be on his way.

I like this setup where you show the whole process. People need to remember that that truck might not look pretty, but it’s probably been faithfully hauling his entire income for years. Also, farmers usually use their trucks less than a month a year. On a tight income, money is better spent on newer equipment that’s always in use.

Judging by the model year of that truck, it's safe to say it doe not have a diesel engine, gasoline engine instead. GMC was famous for putting gasoline engines in their larger trucks back in the day.

Boy what a 40+ year old beast. Some of these old farm trucks sure last forever. That is a late 1970s GMC. My grandfather used a 1967 Chevy truck like that to haul firewood to heat his house when i was young. We used to get 7 cords of firewood on a truck that size. It sure brings back memories from when i was 10. Miss you Pops. I can't believe it's been 15 years.

Too many insurance liabilities. Plus pace would be stop/start ~bolt this/ unbolt that. Drop wrench. Bump head reaching for it. Then well the cussing starts here and you know nothing goes right after that. rofcrying.. Good Morning Ron, It was very fortunate that your shop was close by and you have the facility to be able to park that load of grain inside. Had all that grain gotten wet it would have cost that gentlemen a lot of lost time and money getting the grain to a dryer before it was ruined and with the slim margins farmers work with a lost load can be devastating. Great video as usual and it is a blessing that no one was injured or killed when those duals let loose. But if the farmers were paid a fair price for their crops I bet money he would have had a newer grain truck. It is shameful what our farmer's are paid ...but when the government gets involved in anything, it always gets messed up. In my opinion government needs to get out of setting prices of farmers goods & let the farmers and the free market set prices.

I read some of these respectful comments about farmers' and that truck. It reminds me of my late grandfather. He farmed all his life. He had a side business. Using a Ford grain style truck with a livestock body, sometimes double decking it, he would haul livestock every Monday and sometimes also on Tuesday to the Detroit Stockyards from the Flint, Michigan area. Sometimes my dad would go with him to load livestock. I'd do it once in awhile and ride to Detroit with him. My favorite was stopping at a little store and buying a trucker's lunch. We'd get some baloney, a loaf of bread, and some mustard. I don't remember needing a wrecker. Great videos. Teagards...

You have to be sure to put safety first. If you were to loose the tow or be hit from behind due to not having lights it could be catastrophic for your business or cost someones life. I watched a truck come loose once where the tow crossed the centerline and almost wiped out an entire family. The only survivors were a 7 year old boy and his 3 year old sister. The 3 year old was paralized from the waist down and the accident cost over $20 million by the time the lawsuit was over. Safety must ALWAYS come first and Ron is the safest operator I have ever seen. God bless you and your crew. And may you always be safe.

Ron as always you show what common sense is all about, unfortunately it isnt so common anymore. Just to day down here in Aussie where it is now winter I was on the back roads in my area with wet foggy and slippery conditions and as always too many or the other drivers were more interested in sitting on the speed limits than driving to the conditions and slowing down 10 to 20 KmPH. Your words of wisdom about towing and going slower than limits is good for all tow jobs be it a small household trailer or like you showed a heavy loaded truck on a wrecker pity more drivers dont fully think the position through when on the roads.

I know its a job, but it is more than that I think you are grateful to every thing you are putting into it. These video have really just been a blessing to me as I have faced difficulties. if i recall correctly, he manages the towing and recovery part of a multi service company. his parents own the company.

That truck is so old it's hard to find original parts to replace worn out parts in it! :D Ron does an amazing job of looking after any and all manner of vehicle, no matter how beat up or rusty looking it is! This is probably why the farmer called Ron's company, he knows he'll get good service and careful handling! :D Well done Ron, taking care of the customer's vehicle should always remain #1.

Ron Pratt- This is been by far the best video with all the extra footage! The prep work is the most important part of any move or haul! It does suck at the clean up time though! Nice to see that I am not the only one that has to stop and adjust my set ups! Keep em rolling!

Ron, I appreciate how methodical you are in your operation. You do things in a particular order, tools are put up as you finish using them so you don't run around and gather things up when you are ready to move out and you don't lose things. I guess part of it comes with experience and a great deal comes from just thinking ahead as you do things. I have watched another video by someone else where they took over an hour to clear the road with a not that hard of a recovery. And they had three trucks and at least 5 guys milling around there. You are a class act, Ron.
