As a train driver (not in the USA), please, please, always be careful near crossings. Not only are you risking your own life, but we also often suffer especially psychological trauma and stress after such an accident, especially if someone dies. Trust me, it's not worth risking your life, I have seen some really bad wrecks before with multiple fatalities, so just stop if the gates are down and if there are no gates look left and right multiple times to make sure no train is approaching! Especially long cargo trains have an incredibly long braking distance.
@brianburns721116 күн бұрын
I second what you’ve said because I’ve been a locomotive engineer (driver) for 25 years. I’ve been through my share of this type of situation. On my line there is a gravel pit. The truck drivers into the pit used to always try to make a run for the crossing if they heard us coming. That was until a friend and colleague hit one of the trucks. I’ve heard that the driver is a vegetable now.
@kennethwilliams-dl9gi16 күн бұрын
that is said every time theres an accident and yet accidents keep happening. drivers are too inattentive to their surroundings and oblivious to the obvious. even gates do not prevent stupidity and ignorance.
@klsc851016 күн бұрын
I was an engineer on the now defunct KLS&C. I agree with you. I never hit a vehicle. I did have a few very close calls. Trains stop like your car on wet ice. That is not fast!

Did the trailer of that semi get stuck due to to the hopper? Can't really understand how they can't see or hear a train half a mile away
@toddweller28416 күн бұрын
Also, don't forget to listen. Sometimes the horn can be heard with no train in sight as the rails curve. And on a good day, that horn can be heard at a distance. Lived close to some tracks and you could hear the horn from over 1/2 mile away.

Having grown up near RR tracks and 2 crossings, I learned that you don't mess with trains. There wasn't a fatal while I lived in the town but some of the aftermath would have made you guess. I wish that crossing safety was part of any driver training as that would help. Great job Ron & crew! And on a sad note, that was a very expensive lesson for the driver. I hope that he takes it to heart and passes it along to any and all that he meets.

Brother (& in-law) of two engineers, both experienced incidences like this, and it was heart-wrenching to observe. I hate to think what it would be like to actually go through it. First off, crews were replaced before the train was allowed to move. Mandatory off time, and a psychiatric evaluation before going back to work. Paperwork, paperwork, paperwork. Investigation. Clouds of litigation threaten even though everything was done correctly on the train crews part. All that on top of knowing someone's life was lost or permanently altered under YOUR wheels. Don't risk it, it isn't worth it. Not for anyone.

As long as no one is hurt train vs vehicle accidents are interesting to review and clean up. The physics on how a tire ended up 150+ feet away in a tree etc really illustrates the amount of inertia is in a collision like that. Also thankful that train collisions are actually very rare these days because they are rarely no injury type things.

I knew someone who was driving one of the big original Chevy Blazers when she got hit by a train at a nonsignaled crossing like this, and survived. There were more trees, but it wouldn't have blocked the view. It was early morning, she was looking straight into the sun. The crossing was narrow and there was a pickup stopped on the other side coming toward her. She thought he had stopped to be polite and let her go first. The combination of the sun and that assumption was enough distraction to make her forget to look. Fortunately she had her seatbelt on and the train hit the unoccupied passenger side.

In addition to what others have said PLEASE, PLEASE remember this. The TRAIN ALWAYS WINS, the train CREW ALWAYS LOSES, either due to injury/death or the mental trauma of being unable to avoid a potentially fatal crash. Thankfully in THIS situation the semi "almost" made it, so the train only hit as a glancing blow instead of a T-Bone. The latter very easily could have caused serious injury or death to the train crew.
