Same chrono I use... like the app with it to listen to the velocity on my phone. I hear it clear even with ear plugs and ear muffs both in too. Oh gee Ron... glasses and what we see change with em on and with em off!!! Great take on the fouling issue!!! It never ceases to amaze me those who think it dont matter shooting a dirty barrel. When i am doing load development and breaking it in at the same time. I rotate several rifles and start with a fresh clean barrel on each load. Takes a lot of time but well worth it in the long run. Sometimes i will put a higher power scope on a rifle just for load development then when done switch to what I use for hunting. I use my own printed targets and easy to see most bullet holes at 200 yards Thanks for the real world session at the range.. Wow on the 6.5 in a 308 box.!!!! I had a first also not too long ago with different bullets in same box.

Good advice about double checking your ammo! Back in the late 70’s when was a teen-ager, my father and I went to the range. Week before, dad reloaded some .308 for my uncle and mixed up with .30-06 of his gun. I know these 2 rounds have different lengths but he loaded his BSA 30-06 with a .308 by mistake. The BSA was a controled round feed, so the bolt grabed the case by the groove and holded it firmly. He shot it, made such a weird sound and the bullet hit the target side way! You don’t want to do this kind of mistake to oftenly! Fortunately, no dammage. He passed away 10 years ago, but I decided to keep the gun which he bought in the early 50’s. If this gun could talk, it would have so much hunting stories to tell! Thank you so much for your videos, you’re doing such a good job. Richard

I bought a box of 45 ACP Federal Hydoshocks once. It was a 50 round box and when I got it home I noticed someone had exchanged a mixed lot of 7 rounds of various types, manufacturers, and age by how corroded some were. Someone took out enough for a magazine and put their old junk in the box.

Many years ago, for a reason which I no longer recall, I had occasion to open a box of ammo labled .44 WCF at a shop where I was employed. One cartridge caught my eye. When examined closely it was seen to be a .44 Rem Mag rather than a .44 WCF. It seems fortunate that this box was the one that was looked at. If one of our customers had fired one .44 WCF cartridge in a .44 Rem Mag revolver he might have suffered a split case, or only a bad group. One .44 Rem Mag cartridge forced into an old .44 WCF Colt might have made for a bad day.

My friend once had an odd round mixed in with his brand new 6.5x55 Swedish Mauser ammo. I forget the errant round's caliber, by he unfortunately shot at a deer that season with the oddball round and missed entirely as a giant fireball plume exited his barrel. No harm to the rifle, but it could have been worse.

I enjoy testing my hand loads, but it does get expensive. Different powders, primers, bullets, and cases. Then once I get it down to a good group, I start testing with Different jump measurements. It boils down to having fun just pulling the trigger and not worrying about the cost. It's a hobby and most hobbies are not cheap anymore.

Ron I had a box of Remington Core Lok in 22 250 one of the rounds was dented. I pulled the bullet and discarded the powder and brass. I had bought that box of ammo from a store in Yankton, South Dakota . I spoke with the manager and she told me that they are having problems with people removing the ammo from the boxes and stealing a few rounds .The moral of the story is always check your ammunition. My hunting partner bought some Fire line when he went to put it on the reel I looked at it something was odd it looked like a regular Monofilament line . Someone had done the old switcheroo .

According to Erik Cortina, out of the box accuracy is a matter of luck. The relationship between bullet and lands and finding the accuracy nodes (6/1000th's). Of course getting extreme spread through powder selection and volume are essential too. As you mentioned Ron, find what works well enough and just use that. I enjoyed this video. 😊

USOG told a story of shooting, if memory serves, I think a 30-06 through a .280 Rem. I don't know if they were hand loads or factory, but he mentioned that the bullet stopped at the end of the bore, and got stuck there. Not sure how that happened, but apparently he was able to recover the bullet which had obviously suaged down to the diameter of the bore and clearly lengthened it. I'd say an Angel was looking over his shoulder that day because his face and hands are still intact.

I did some testing of new ammo for my .270 Win this deer season, since my regular Federal Fusion has not been available for it. I tested Winchester Deer Season cup and core, which grouped well, but the Hornady Outfitter CX loads in 130gr. did something unexpected. The first shot keyholed, and the subsequent two follow up shots were not even on paper. I can't figure out why, but I did notice a lot more copper fouling (more than I have ever seen before) in the bore when I cleaned it after getting home. For the record I shot the all copper loads first, and the Winchester cup and core after. Really disappointed in the CX bullets performance, but I can't help but wonder if it's my rifle that's the problem. I cannot shoot 150gr. bullets in this rifle. They TOO keyhole. 130-140 grain, no problem. I have heard that your typical all copper bullet is longer than your typical jacketed bullet at the same weight because copper is lighter than lead, but an odd thing I noticed after the fact is that the 130gr. Winchester Deer Season ammo STILL has a higher ballistic coefficient the the 130gr. Hornady CX ammo. This is all very maddening! Can someone please tell me what I am missing here? The rifle is supposed to be 1:10 twist, but the results I am getting make me think someone at Remington is lying about the twist rate. Is this just a common problem with all copper bullets? I suspect the 150gr. bullet instability is not an uncommon problem in .270 Winchester seeing as I have heard other folks reporting similar instabilities when they fire 150gr. pills from some rifles, but now the 130gr. all copper bullets behaving in similar fashion...??? On a side note, I have found a 30-06 cartridge in a box of .270 Win Core Lokt ammo. Lucky for me I saw the head stamp as I was loading it into my magazine, so no harm no foul. Checking your head stamps is great advice. This lack of quality control is not uncommon for factory ammo, no matter who manufacturers it. Be safe out there, y'all.
@larsstefanaxelsson
@larsstefanaxelsson Жыл бұрын
Well, its easy to check twist rate. All you need is a ruler and a cleaning rod (with a rotating handle). Just tape a flag on the cleaning rod, measure distance, push the rod in (jag with patch is best) until the flag has rotated one revolution, measure again and see what the distance between the measurements are. That’s what I’d start with to actually confirm the twist rate. Then, indeed copper bullets are lighter for their length, and stability is mainly about length, so you typically cannot shoot as heavy lead free bullets as you can lead. There are many stability calculators on the web where you can input the bullet, caliber twist rate etc. and see if your bullet is stable, at least in theory. Just google bullet stability calculator (the Bison bullets one is good.) They’re good enough regardless of bullet material. And I’m no 270 shooter, but not stabilising 150gr bullets sounds wrong to my ears. There’s something funny going on here…
@hammerheadms
@hammerheadms Жыл бұрын
@@larsstefanaxelsson the rifle nomenclature says it's 1:10 twist, but this is also a Remington from a very sketchy era before bankruptcy. The rifle shoots lights out with Federal and Winchester 130gr. jacketed ammo. Anything heavier than that won't group onto a dinner plate. I am at a point where I'm inclined to agree that it might be the rifle.

Odd scenario. If you’re a handloader and have a headspace comparator you might check that. Typically factory ammo is min spec to ensure it’ll work but it could be above min and you could have a tight chamber. Seems very unlikely that all 4 are min spec. My Winchesters are tight but I don’t think I’ve had ammo that wouldn’t work. A hair of resistance closing the bolt but that’s all

Would be to stand the rifle up in a rack so the heat is allowed to radiate away from the barrel as well as traveling up the barrel as heat would a stove pipe. I accidentally shot a .270 out of my 7mm rem mag. It fire formed the case and ruptured it at the based. The debris damaged my lenses on my glasses. It would have taken my eye out if I wasn't wearing them. From the sound I knew something was wrong. When I bolted the gun and grabbed the case it was hot enough to burn the hands. Scary situation!

@@stevenstone9272I went to range with a.308 and .260 . I started with the.308 rifle. Now both are model 7 Rem. They look the same, Identical. I loaded the model 7 .308 with.260 thank God I loaded that way . I shot 3 rounds check it. I almost fainted when I saw the target. What would’ve had I had of started with the.260 and put the .308 in the.260. Blow up. I’m a lot more careful now. No problem, but I learned a real good lesson.

So, the larger case diameter just before the start of the shoulder is what caused the action to be so hard to close, alerting you to a possible problem. Your experience level showed, knowing to open the action back up and figure out what the heck was going on. It probably would have fired from that chamber and maybe nothing really bad would have happened, because the smaller diameter bullet would have likely made its way down the bore without incident. The biggest possible risk was the brass flowing forward under the pressure from being fired, separating just forward of the web and spewing hot gases and unburnt powder back into your action. It's also possible you would have blown the shoulder forward, added more taper to the case, and created a 308 case with a shorter neck. Glad you didn't find out!

I've been hearing a lot of good news about the new remington corlocked tip. Exactly like the old core lock. But it has a polymer tip in the front for extended range. I have actually won competitions with it. Shooting shooting to 440 yd quarter mile. And it was fantastic. For my competition gun shooting in m d t chashi 243 savage. My preferred load is 58 grain Hornady superformance.. Velocity is 3980.. It might be a barrel burner but dang don't it get there quick and accurate. I can keep the group. At the size of a baseball. Out to a quarter of a mile. I chose the 243 because the 65 creed more has the same ballistics out to 800 yd.

I'm pretty new into my .308 rem 700 sps tactical, so shorter barrel also. I have just shot some cheap FMJ but before deer season I had a couple boxes of Hornady Black .308 168gr a-max. I've tested no other quality ammo in it yet but many guys recommended the heavier grains for this setup and the 168 specifically. It took my first deer a week later with a nearly pinpoint shot albeit not necessarily the right bullet for it. The hornady black a-max can be had around $34-35/box where the precision hunter is more like $47-48. If I had the reloading gear I would start loading some eld-x like in the precision hunter as they say it's a better precision and animal round.

Crazy story when I got my reloading press I went to de-prime all of my brass I had kept throughout the years, 2 different cases of .223 vmax (kept the brass in the original box) had .204 projectiles in them, one had 3 the other had 2, Im suprised enough powder was even in them to make them go bang or even leave the barrel 😮 correction just looked at some pics and 3 total pieces of brass had 204 projectiles in them, 1 had 1, 1 had 2 and 1 had 3, it was a box of Superformance match 75gr bthp, the projectiles were 32gr vmax .204's

I once shot my son’s 270 bullet out of my 280. Easy 50+ yard shot but it sounded and felt weird. Realized what I had done then back to my truck to get MY ammo. After an hour of tracking found him and finished him but it took two shots. First one went ??? the second one did the job. It didn’t damage my rifle but took HOURS to clean the bore. Since then different colored boxes for different calibers.

Had this happen with a 7mm08 in an off the shelf box of 308… it chambered and fired. It sounded strange - a sound that can’t be described in print; like an object going down a pipe similar to a low toned thuwump…… probably a lack of pressure. I’m sure some clown compared them and mixed it up. Lesson learned 25 years ago. Still have the brass.

I remember when my gun club had a chronograph. I took my new Ruger 77 in 30/06 with 150 grain bullets from Federal, Remington, and Winchester. Non of them got the 2900 fps it claimed in the ballistic charts. If i remember correctly, the highest velocity was a little over 2700 feet per second and the lowest velocity was 2389 fps. I started calling my Ruger 77 a 30/30. Funny thing was the brass came out with a big lump on one side of each cartridge case base. I waited for years before i sent it to Ruger for repair. It was a Bicentennial edition that i purchased the day i turned 18 years old. They rebarreled it but i was very disappointed with Ruger after all six of my Ruger rifles had rifling issues. A cleaning rod with a tight patch would stop spinning about halfway through thr barrel for an inch or so then start spinning again. They blamed those "Wilson" barrels. I had several repaired and sold or traded all of them for Winchester Model 70s and CZ 550s. Ive never chronographed any of the new rifles. I frequently think the velocity listed on modern day ammo boxes is very optimistic. Your 308 may really be a 30/30....😮

A few months ago I bought a box of 308 at everybody’s favorite sporting goods and there was one cartridge that was NOT a 308 stuck in the box, I only caught it while loading to sight in and noticed the primer on 1 cartridge was a different color. Then I seen your video and realized this was concerning. How does this happen at the factory or does it?

Ron is lucky that the 6.5 CM didn't jam in the chamber. It does indeed have less taper than the 308, so it can jam tightly if someone tries to force it.
