Good job. Yes, hail. If they wait, those shingles will look terrible in the future.

Looks like david is the only one who likes the roof, no worries in a few years it will rot away. The entire lower decking is rotting, numerous other places, 1x2s on the rake, with out drip edge, still not good. Replace what decking needs replaced, then add drip edge and of course shingles. wa la new roof, saves house from further decay, black mold, so on.

Here we go again with the gutter being cut to the roof instead of being capped and running off to the lower gutter systems. And that seems to be the least of the issues here. My question is how do you make it to all these fails so frequently every week?! You've got endless work in your area just based upon your videos. I feel for these homeowners though. 😬

I would not call that in for hail. I currently inspect for insurance company's as a 3rd party steep assist for over the past 7 years. Prolly looked at over 10,000 roofs and have never called hail unless there is broken matting or an adjuster states to NOT go off HAAG (almost all adjusters want to buy the roof, we just need good photos to show a story that makes sense). I always allow the contractor to circle all he wants then put a number down for them in damage assessment count photo. That allows the adjuster to review and consider what the contractor was concerned about (some might buy roofs for cosmetic hail to shingles ie. non HAAG damage even when they shouldn’t be just to shut up the contractor and homeowner as well as so they can get a good review. Good reviews are what usually get adjuster’s raises not denying claims. When I arrive if I'm not seeing signs of recent hail to vegetation, window screens, spatter inside of sludgy gutters, or spatter on roof stains that tells me there hasn't been any recent hail. Looks like it could be old hail since you have small collateral to HVAC cap but not damaging enough to break matting and it's still shedding water so insurance looks at it as still functioning. Most policy's only cover hail for 6-12 months after the DOL. I have seen some go back as far as 2 years but very rarely. By the looks of all your videos your a solid contractor with a good reputation so I wouldn’t be that guy to throw 💩at the wall to see if it sticks. Surprised you don’t run across roofs with man made creasing all over them. It’s a huge issue across the entire country (7-8 out of 10 roof claims are have some sort of vandalism when a contractor is involved). Usually all the paper contractor company’s are the 1s who have to create damage to get jobs because they can’t sell retail or know how to play their cards correctly by knowing the correct things that need done to properly justify a full roof replacement (because they usually have never installed a roof in their entire life). Some states are harder then other’s especially if it’s a state that don’t require a reasonable match appearance.

We've had a lot of high heat lately, which you could probably see in the videos. I can't remember if I asked where you were from so I don't know if 50° is hot or cold to you?

How are the soffit vents that you see? Usually the vents I’ve seen are 1) not installed “well” [meaning they cut a hole out and insert a white HD plastic grill type cover), have my thoughts in those but diff conversation 2) all the vents are “clogged” w/ paint and/or dirt b/c when homes get repainted, no one tapes them off for prep and just sprays paint right over and in them. Which means, they aren’t doing there job very well, if at all in some cases…. It still amazes me for what I see and for what I see ppl do for any type of trade in building, repairing, remodeling a home; but hey, it’s not there home and they getting paid, right 😢…..imo, just is sad…… Thx for the vids, and the bullet was nice find, and correct, what goes up, ALWAYS comes down. Usually find a lot of fireworks as well (bottle rockets especially) Cheers

The damage to the metal parts - specifically the dents - sure does look like that was caused by hail, or someone who was trying to fake hail damage (by hitting it with maybe a hammer). The chimney cap has dents in it, but do the gutters and downspouts have dents too? Hail isn’t selective. I almost don’t understand the gutters being installed with downspouts that drop right onto the roof - the granules will wear far sooner directly beneath those downspouts. Once the water is collected into a pipe, it’s best to keep it in a pipe - they should run pipe from those downspouts to feed into the closest lower level gutters.

Is it fixable?
@jeffdyrland2795

Those gutters are a mess. As a former gutter installer, that kind of stuff drives me crazy. Zip screws are designed to screw metal to metal. Screwing into bare wood, they always pull out. Some hangers aren’t clipped onto the back of the gutter. That’s either being lazy or the fascia isn’t set properly. Why people angle cut the gutter to dive into the roof line, I will never understand. It’s never done properly and ends up looking like that! Lol

I don't know jack about roofing , but it looks like hail damage. That whole roof needs replaced either way. Edit: definitely looking forward to cooler weather.

I’m no roofer or contractor but that roof looks good to me. I don’t understand why roofers aren’t licensed and have any rigorous testing requirements or certification requirements. Otherwise any swinging duck with a hammer can call themselves a roofer and slap some crap together as long as it’s not leaking they are paid handsomely. There’s no callback no recourse for the stupid homeowner but to try to find an honest man who knows what they are doing and rip part or most of it off and do it again. What’s the difference between an uncaring contractor and a bank robber? Nothing!

How much overhang do you need in to the gutters?
@GrandRoofingInc
@GrandRoofingInc 2 жыл бұрын
It's not so much that this roof wasn't overhanging enough. It's the fact they didn't have any apron, and to make it worse their starter wasn't down with the shingle. Typically we will hang the shingle 3/4" off the edge metal.
@markpetri3405
@markpetri3405 2 жыл бұрын
Overhang is not the issue. The lack of flushing up the starter to the bottom of the first row to cover the keyway is more an issue. The importance of a gutter apron is to account for surface tension of the water as it comes to the bottom of the shingles. Water doesn’t always drip at an edge, sometimes it “sticks” to the surface that it is on and follows the surface, even slightly uphill at times.

kzbin.info/www/bejne/qXW3dIeYrt6aZ9U their explanation is great, but in my area I have never seen 6” gutter apron. Also we keep the apron tight to the faceboard and tuck the gutter behind it.

If we can see inside the gutters, with hail there will be dents there too. With hail hitting the shingles I would expect hail to hit the gutters and downspouts too.
