Asphalt Shingles - Replacing shingle section from wind damage.
How to repair asphalt shingles - series of roof repairs. Repairing Asphalt shingles from storm damage. No water damage on this one. Just damaged and missing roof shingles. We were very lucky as we were in line with the NE side of the eye, which is the worst part. Finally was able to repair these shingles 6 months after the hurricane.
This video is the third in a series of 7 videos. This video focuses mainly on removing the remains of the asphalt shingles, and replacing with new asphalt shingles. There was not any water damage, or any tree damage. So it is just a matter of removing the damaged shingles, cleaning up the area, and installing new shingles in place. There are 6 separate sections that I will take apart and put back together in this video series.

Why did you double nail.First time i have seen that.I am not a roofer i weld.I have to fix my mothers roof this week.Great job with the instruction.There are quite a few shingles missing on her roof and i was thinking about metal roofing over top of existing.Bad winter winds plus old roof in upstate N.Y.

Excellent video. This video is gonna save me thousands of $. The question I have is why would you not cut out the old roof felt and then slide new roof felt under the edges of the old shingles? The roof I am patching is so old the roof felt isn't felt at all - it is 'tar paper' and it has deteriorated to nothingness. I assume the old roof felt on the roof you are patching is still in good condition and you opted to NOT replace the old roof felt...right?

Correct. Replacing/repairing tarpaper would be better in your case as to not lay shingles over bare wood. In this area, once the shingles are installed, the roof felt or tarpaper is useless as waterproofing. The shingles are now the primary waterproofing. The methods we use in this area, where ice dams are not a concern, the tarpaper is a slip sheet to separate the roof covering and the wood deck. The tarpaper also serves as a temporary dry in during new construction.

How do you know when to stop removing the old to tie in the new shingles? I notice you say that you have a tie in with the right side of the roof. Is it the edge of a whole shingle you're looking for? is it an edge or a complete shingle with a clean edge? Or is it an particular angle?

I was probably looking for a whole shingle tab as there were rips in the shingles. So I would have been taking it past the last ripped shingle tab or the seam. It just depends on where it is.

Depends on the age. If it is just one shingle you should be able to repair.

How long does it take for a replace shingle to get the same color as the rest? Noticed damaged shingles in new home and they replace the damage ones but it doesnt match, they look darker, the area looks like its wet. Roofing company stated they are from the same lot but the color is off because the replaced shingles are brand new and the others were expose to weather for 1 year. Warranty manager said for us to give it about 3 weeks....we live in Florida... is this realistic? I dont trust the builder obviously.

It may never get to be the same color, but at least 5 years or so.

That is the exact color match. Cedar, which will eventually turn in 10 years. The only other thing would be to put weatherwood or charcoal and they will never match. This roof is 18 years old so has 5-8 years left. I would think it will get a new roof before any of the shingles match.

It's the exact color. The existing are dirty, and the new are well, new. The New will eventually blend with the existing. Can't purchase 15 year old shingles.
