It’s an amazing product and your video is well done! I’ve installed this product in the Denver area and people should know that the installers need to go slow and doublecheck their measurement and chalk lines often. This product can easily be installed incorrectly and literally make the roof look crooked. I’ve seen it happen on other installs and about 200 sqft had to be re-done. If that would gone unchecked then the whole roof would need to be re-done. F-Wave will offer a product engineer on your first install which will help a great deal and after that you are pretty much on your own so great care must be taken to make sure it’s done right.

I like the "walk on" aspect. I have a low pitch single story ranch, and I like using my leaf blower to blow my gutters out at least once in the spring, and once in the fall. Normally I wouldn't think of walking on a roof, but for cleaning gutters, this is the way. This product is probably going to be my next material for my next roof.

After a hail storm in early 2021…we had our roof replaced with F-WAVE. Now, we decided to have the solid decking replaced with 3/4” plywood. In addition to that…the underlayment was done with ice & water shield. Now question??!!! Why did we went that route?? Because we have two massive pecan trees that are canopying the entirety of the house. The roof is holding on beautifully. Now February 2023…central Texas got hit w/an ice storm…pretty hard. This unfortunately damaged our two trees and they’ll have to be removed. During this ice storm…the accumulation on the trees was around 3”+ in diameter. So from the inside of our home…it sounded like the roof was getting bombarded. It’s still holding on amazing. The owner of company that did our roof…he has his roof done w/the same product.

I'm a roofer w 20 years experience. I know that TPO membrane used in flat roofing becomes very brittle after 7-10 years. Once this happens hail impacts will cause severe damage to the membrane. The damage looks just like a spiderweb crack on a windshield that's been hit by a rock.

Thanks for the review. Considering getting these as our "class 4 hail resistant" shingles are already possibly needing replacement after only 8 years in Colorado hail. Cost of FWave is more than double, but maybe it's worth it for a more permanent solution?

I wonder how it would do for a HOT climate, like Florida or even hotter, Arizona or Los Angeles?? Los Angeles gets 90-115F heat then in winter gets 37F cold for a few times, and the rain. How will the shingle using TPO hold up in such swings of temp over the years? This is the test many would want to know. How are their lab tests in this? Maybe it makes for a hotter attic or maybe noisier when it rains, or?

Thanks for sharing these videos. I could not help but notice in this video the deck underneath was busted from the hail but the shingles were intact. Question without going into the attic how will the busted plywood (decking) be replaced? What would be the easiest way to replace these if needed?? Shingle and decking?

Good and honest review. I am a normal consumer, not a roofer. It surprises me that here in the year 2020, we are still producing 10-25 year asphalt roofs. It surprises me because technology should have caught up with the market by now. F-Wave looks like a good alternative. In my opinion for a $$$ thousand dollar roof on a traditional house (ie here in Austin TX), all the roofs should be lasting 50 years. Instead they all have the particles fall off, and the shingles fail in 20 years or less. I call that a failure in the roofing manufacturer's technology. Because I sure don't have to replace house siding or interior sheetrock every 20 years!

What kind of testing did they put the shingles under? Did they expose the shingles to extreme temperatures for extended periods of time? I would expect some sort of stability testing to prove the concept since the technology is only a few years old.

Hi Jeff, we have subjected our product to all the same ASTM testing that other shingles are subjected to to be able to be sold in the United States. Freeze thaw is certainly one of those and in those tests are expansion contraction rate was very minimal, less than 1 mm.

Great review! Getting ready to install F wave on my house. My concern is that they would become brittle over time as well. This is directly from F wave website: “F-wave’s REVIA Synthetic Shingles, on the other hand, are engineered for maximum durability. Because they have zero granules, they won't become brittle, and their performance won’t deteriorate over time.” Does this make sense, that just because they don’t have granules they won’t become brittle? Doesn’t make sense to me.

And after speaking with F wave rep today, they say their accelerated 25 year testing shows that they should not become brittle. They expect super longevity. But I guess we will see. In my opinion, we know for a fact that asphalt shingles will become brittle and deteriorate, so might as well try a new product if there’s a chance that it won’t become brittle and has all the other benefits as well

I would consider these in a hot climate even, that hardly gets hail at all, but, if it outlasts asphalt by a large enough time, it maybe with using. So which comes to the bottom line..the warranty!

Hi Christopher, we have multiple styles to choose from. Our product is installed very similar to asphalt shingles. It cuts with a straight blade utility knife instead of a hook blade and it can be installed over any synthetic underlayment.

I drove through a neighborhood with 2 year old houses in Pflugerville Texas that had 2 inch hail. There was one house on the street had f-wave and it was the only house w/o a roofer's sign in front of it. The other houses had designer shingles and metal, even the metal roofs were being replaced. That sold me. I'd be curious what accessories you recommend to go w/ f-wave. I am upgrading to Titanium 50 underlayment and bullet boots, anything else? I believe the roof system is only as good as the weakest link.

We've installed F-Wave a few times in the Austin area this year. This includes the area affected by the 4/15 storm you're referring to. We install 24-gauge T & D style drip-edges, a variety of the higher grade synthetic underlayment, bullet boots, StormGuard, W Metal valleys as well as ensuring proper ventilation. We are making F-Wave our primary moving forward as standard asphalt shingles are a subpar product here in Central Texas. They simply do not hold up! Good choice by upgrading to the F-Wave. It has certainly made a believer our of us!

@@BalconesRoofing Thanks, I saw your work on F-wave's website. Nicely done. I wish I had gotten a quote from you. I ended up going with another roofer, but I insisted on the 24-guage T & D and bullet boots. Apparently my job was the first to use ice/water shield as much as F-wave recommends, 2 feet along eaves and rakes into the interior wall and in hips/valleys and penetrations. I also had my roofer add soffit vents as my house had none on the front and remove a ridge vent over a lower dormer. I love how you do all that standard, I had to get my roofer to add all of these into the contract. Apparently he had no idea how much some of the things I was asking for cost as he claimed he lost money on my roof, but said he learned a lot. F-wave is great. It is so sad to see all of the new asphalt roofs going in knowing it will take one hail storm to destroy them again.

@@roundrockguy Yeah, it doesn't make a lot of sense to offer an upgrade like this just to skimp on everything else. We install per the manufacturer's specifications and recommendations and then some. Each job has goes through a full cost analysis so we can be as accurate as possible with pricing instead of offering a price per square.

@@BalconesRoofing I love the way you do it. My roofer ordered normal drip edge in my custom color but I refused to let them begin until they ordered the T and D I specified in 24 gauge. It delayed the project but I didn't care. My house has large gables and a lot of rake ends so it really mattered to me. He also messed up in letting me specify UDL50 and it isn't even available in central Texas. To compensate for the sub to Tigerpaw at least he threw in gutters over our front porch where we needed it. If we move to another house, or have some major disaster I know who I will call - you.

My original comment was deleted for some reason. I’m skeptical because a lot of roofs I work on that are TPO/PVC get red algae. I know shingles can get that, but your premium ones have copper in them to help keep your roof looking nice. The shingle has granules that can help with grip some. What happens when these get red algae and you try to “walk” on your roof? Houses have shady areas and I could see these getting dirty real quick, which will make them slippery. How do you clean them when they get dirty? With shingles you can add those copper strips you made a video on a little while back, but for these I don’t see anyway to keep them clean. I like the idea of new types of roofs coming out for home owners, but I’d stick to a premium shingle or get a metal roof if I’m spending this kind of money. I’d have to give it another 5-10 years to see how this is going before I’d consider it.

Stone coated metal roofs do not fail due to hailstone impacts but they may show massive dents due to these impacts and insurance companies do not pay claims for cosmetic damages. In addition, the interlocking metal roofing systems are very hard to impossible to replace single damaged shingles. You have to work your way up t o the damaged shingle and replace all the lower metal shingles due to the interlocking nature of the metal roof.

That all boils down to how large and how steep each slope is. A proper flowing 5" gutter can shed the water on a 10 square straight gable 4/12 slope. Make that a 10 square straight gable 8/12 and 6" is necessary.

It’s not about residential or commercial but size of the roof. One thing for sure is: always go with bigger size downspouts. 6” gutter will work for most residential roofs (unless you have huge slopes) but regular 2x3 down spouts rarely can keep up the water flow (3x4 cost slightly more but it double capacity: 12 square inches VS 6) and usually make all the difference

@@RoofingInsights3.0 realistically, a gutter crew is going to charge maybe $.50 more per LF on 6", but we can upsell it at $1.50 to $2 per LF. Or I can discount it and sell a decent mesh gutter guard with it and still be at half of what Leaf Filter or other gutter protection systems want to charge. The choice to go to 6" with 3x4" downs is an easy one to make for the homeowner, as long as the salesman knows how to pitch the idea.

Hello, I have done a tremendous amount of research out of necessity on roofing products as a consumer. I live in Colorado, and we were blessed to have a semi-custom home built and completed in 2016. The hail has gotten worse in the last five or so years, from a size aspect. So, our new home with Class 4 asphalt shingle roofing has been destroyed twice already by hailstones (2016 and 2019). I nearly just replaced the roof again with the similar Class 4 asphalt shingle and instead started down the investigative route of finding a product that would stand up to the Colorado hail. This was when the F-Wave product entered into our plan. My insurance will not cover the additional cost; however, as you remarked in this exceptional product review, “Do the right thing.” I am moving ahead and having F-Wave installed, as I conclude it will work as developed and was made to feel better about our conclusion after watching your product review. Thank you very much for doing what you do by aiding consumers and the industry with the actuality. I am a big fan! On a related note about the F-Wave product acceptance, my HOA approved the F-Wave product for usage. This is a considerable deal in my neighborhood. I found out that a well known, iconic, enormous, and exclusive resort hotel not far from me just utilized the F-Wave product to repair their roof as well. This assisted me, as I understand, they are an international destination resort hotel that has some remarkable talent working for them. I do have two quick follow up questions: 1). Is the Vermont Slate available for installation presently? 2). Which of the F-wave styles do you speculate might look the nicest on a Craftsman-style gable roof ranch, garden level, twenty-foot ceilings, stucco home with four-foot moss/granite-like stone along the bottom of the outside walls and all of the bases of the pillars, and wooden beams, shutters, and an oversized heavy wooden rustic front door - all wood stained Behr Padre Brown at the peaks and porch areas? The trim and gutters are painted a dark olive green with the primary color of the stucco being the color Porpoise by Behr. I am inquiring because if you felt one of the F-Wave styles popped better than the others, we would find it valuable to know. (I am embarrassed - if you now believe that our home must look ridiculous because I am shocking awful at illustrating it and survive these types of conditions mostly because I can take a picture) All the best from beautiful Douglas County, Colorado

An innovative product. My concern is how well the plastic will stand up to years and years of sunlight. Plastics usually don't do so well under constant heat and IR from the sun. I read their hail warranty. It's nice to see someone actually warrant their shingle against hail damage. They problem is that you must get a certification from a local government agency that the hail was not greater than 2 inches in diameter. That's impossible to certify unless the certifying agency was right there at your house during the hail storm. The hail warranty is only good for 5 years, too. I couldn't justify the cost unless I planned on living in my house for who knows how long. A 50 year warranty means nothing when the average person moves every seven years. Very few people live in the same house for even twenty years. When you sell your house I doubt the buyer is going to care so much about the warranty on the roof. Read the warranty and note that the warranty does transfer, but not at near the level of the original warranty.

Good points, we actually mention it as well. It has been tested, and “years” can be tested in labs faster as well. We do hope and believe it will last, but time will show. One thing is certain: it performs better than asphalt shingles. And it hailed every year in some markets. I would rather install F wave than dealing with claims every other year. Even if it’s only last 10 years, it will justify the cost.

All shingles manufactured in the United States have to meet a standard of 2000 hours of intense UV testing, each hour is equal to 1.83 days of sunlight. That is around ten years of sunlight. Our product has been tested to 4500 hours which is just under 25 years of sunlight.

Even Owens Corning and others come up with new products all the time at the expense of consumers who they treat as test subjects (guinea pigs). This fact alone invalidates the concern that F- Wave Revian shingles are too new in the market. These companies would be hypocrites to make such arguments. If they do, Owens Corning, GAF, and others need to do some serious self-searching/examination.

Euroshield is class-C fire rated, not class-A. That makes big difference in areas near wilderness.

Before selling this to a homeowner please damage it and leave it out in the sun with no heat gun to see if it actually works. 4 days in the sun and our samples were still damaged.

Yessir. Not hating. Their rep is super nice and I was excited about the product until my office tested it.

I would test it again. I scratched it beyond believe (you can see in video) and heat gun took super deep scratch out. Shingles and rubber would be in garbage after that dent

Insurance companies make money on hail, not lose money on hail. Insurance companies never do anything without turning a profit.

I don't see how. My premium is $750 a year and it's going to cost them $14,000, less a $2,000 deductible, to reshingle my roof. Even if they raise my premium $250 a year they'll still be waiting a long time to break even from my loss.

@@cousinfester4621 el jefe is 100% correct. They're raising premiums across a zip code, not just at your house. The insurance company gets theirs. Believe that! Us roofers get ours and at my company, we make sure to maximize each home owner's claim.
