*EDIT* If you are coming here to this video now keep in mind pretty much everything is still applicable! However newer mechanics like V-Shift have been added after the video went live, but other than that all the core fundamentals are the same, enjoy! So here we are with a beginners guide for SFV! Lots of new blood what with the game going on PSN+ and honestly I shoulda had this up a few days ago to meet with the launch of that so my bad. Few notes 1) Even though its 40 minutes long there is still so much more I coulda mentioned as there is a lot of depth to how SFV works so this is as far as I am concerned, the absolute barebone basics to get you started. 2) Please check the link in the vid description for the CFN site that gives you all frame data and move properties as it will help your learning! 3) There's a few audio gremlins and I am sorry for that, but I didn't have time to re-record those so please forgive me on that. I hope this video helps! *EDIT* This video was made before the Season V patch, so nothing on V-shift, just fyi!

I've been a SSB4/SSBU weasel for quite a few years now, but the SF6 reveal convinced me to finally take the plunge into some deeper waters. I just wanted to pile on with everyone else and say that this was exceptionally helpful, and I really appreciate you making it. I already know a lot of the terminology within the FGC and I understood the most basic basics of how these games work, but the foggier mechanics that SFV does a less-than-ideal job of explaining were way more approachable here. I know how hard it can be to explain these sorts of games, but you really killed it here!

It has crossplay with Playstation? That just sealed the deal, gonna buy it on the halloween sale! I started playing this game back in June. I loved playing fighting games when I was a kid. ( so back in the day playing SF 2 & SF 3. MK 1, 2 & 3. MvsC, Tekken 1, 2 & 3, Bushido Blade) As time passed I ended up playing mostly MK games (and Injustice), and then not even really playing any during the MK X era, but When I saw the trailer for MK 11 I got that FG itch again. Looked for some good KZbin videos, found your videos and loved them. That turned into me watching a lot of them (MK or not) because I loved how you broke the games down and made it so much more then the elite pro players and the rest of us button mashers. Made me want to learn actual technique, and play more than just NRS games. So I got SFV and GG Xrd Rev 2 and have been playing them for the past few months. Seriously thinking of getting DBZF too, and I can’t wait for GG Strive to come out. This was a very long way of saying, thank you not just for your videos, but for reigniting my FG fire and making a lot more fun then it was before. Much love to you my friend!

Your video is very clear and extremely useful... though one thing that's missing from the game, is a slow down training mode... in which we can see everything slowler as we play and get kind of QTE prompts when a move can link into another, and be able to make it progressively faster... Because right now, even though i understand what you''re saying, as of now, my body is just not physically able to do moves fast enough and with proper timing to perform most of those combos. lol Most game's stories ease the Player through gameplay by teaching mechanics progressively, but that's always been missing in fighting games, and that's really sad, because it makes, us, intrested newbs, completely unable to get in.

In over 10 years of playing/following fighting games, I've never heard "whiff cancelling" used in the way that you use it here. Whiff cancelling usually refers to the ability to cancel a normal into a special without hitting the opponent, which doesn't occur -at all- in Street Fighter. What you're talking about, inputting a normal + special to whiff punish, is typically referred to as a "buffered special", "super buffer" (usually used in 3S, specifically for supers of course), or "hit confirm" depending on the normal. EDIT: Kara-cancelling is totally a thing in Street Fighter, which is whiff cancelling startup frames of select (command) normals. Sagat's df.LK xx tiger knee is a classic example.
@rooflemonger4 жыл бұрын
In over 25 years of playing fighting games I have never heard whiff canceling used in any way other than the way I used it. So that's on you I guess? You are buffering sure, but its buffering the whiff cancel.
@frey794 жыл бұрын
@@rooflemonger You're definitely wrong on this tho. Whiff cancelling has always been the ability to cancel a whiffed normal into a special or a super (or other things depending on the game). It only exists in few fighting games, DBFZ being an example with normals being whiff-cancellable into vanish for example. I believe it's also a thing in Melty Blood as well as King of Fighters and maybe other games I'm not too familiar with. What you're talking about in your video is just an option select for easy hit confirms.
@rooflemonger4 жыл бұрын
@@frey79 being special cancelable on whiff is not the same thing, in fact quite the opposite, neither does it have anything to do with vanish as thats a universal mechanic in DBFZ. I am not "definitely in the wrong" on this. Its also not a hitconfirm at all, also the opposite of that, hit confirming is a 100% differing thing.
@frey794 жыл бұрын
@@rooflemonger You didn't understand my comment at all. What I said is that YOUR definition of whiff cancelling is wrong. I used DBFZ's vanish as an example of whiff cancelling. I also said "[...] into a special or a super (OR OTHER THINGS DEPENDING ON THE GAME)". It can be command normals or other things. The fact is, whiff cancelling is the action of cancelling a move that whiffed into another move. Something very rare in fighting games (as I said some form of it is possible in melty blood and KoF) and not possible in SFV. What you're calling "whiff cancelling" is just buffering the special/super during the whiffed normal's animation. If your move whiffs, the special/super doesn't come out since it CAN'T cancel into it on whiff. That's called an option select and its purpose is hit-confirms without having to react to the normal hitting the opponent. That's what you're saying in the video and it's just that. An option select. Whiff cancelling is completely opposite of that and would in fact make this option select impossible.

Nice video. You could have used training mode functionality a bit more though. Like at 6:01 you could have had the dummy set to block. You could have also had the dummy set to block after first attack for 33:02 to make combos easier to understand. If you make another sfv video, you could make one about how to use training mode (finding combos, frame traps, okizeme, post-throw set-ups, setting up the dummy for a situation you have trouble with, etc.).

What control setup do you recommend for PS5 controllers?

I would just use the default. Mess around and if you get a permutation that works for you go for it but otherwise most people I know that play on pad just play on the default.

I just got SFV to prepare for SF6 I haven't played an SF game religiously since Street Fighter 4 and 3 but I'm ready to give it a shot

With SFV being free and playing back when it had its free trial and tried some characters out. I really liked Falk. She reminds me of a charge type characters (which I'm not to fond of( but instead you hold an attack which made it easier for me as I can move and hold a button fine. Idk if Falk is eaay but I hear and stick with saying "Play who you like or who think is cool to you as you'll want to learn more of how to play the character and game" that might counter productive for new player like myself and should start with Ryu or someone but I think the more you like a character the more your willing to learn if you like that character. I don't think Falk is too hard but I like what she has and plan to practice little by little

I haven’t played this game in over a year and a half. Time to get back on that Menat Grind

I'll probably get back on the train when Season 5 starts up. Too late to be godlike or anything anymore(although I was one of the best vega's in Season 1) but plenty time to faff around

@@ThePlasticBowl hey its the truth. I don't often get to brag about being awesome but I was straight up wicked sick in S1 with Vega despite him being so bad. Its half the reason I stopped playing in Season 2 when they friggin nerfed him despite him being a bottom 5 char.

rooflemonger I would play SF4 with my siblings and thought CViper, Rose and Ibuki were so fun so I mained them. I can’t play Ibuki at ALL in sfv, but luckily I’ll get Rose! (Though I’ve never really been super great at Streetfighter regardless )
