It boggles me how your channel, one of the best organized and in-depth chess channels on youtube (and of the highest quality), does not have so many more subscribers, most channels are GMs who are probably better than you at chess but far worse at teaching it in my opinion. Keep up the good work, this channel has helped me massively improve my play from when I started playing in November.

I remember Bronstein called this the Migraine ending. I have come across this end game before it is quite difficult. Good job explaining it though. Also Magnus Carlsen if I remember correctly invented an alternative drawing defence as a kid. You definitely did a good job covering this and made it fascinating. Usually endgames are dry but after watching you play this I quite like them.

It's insanely hard. I spent 10 hours playing it and trying to figure it out.
@noahcrow89824 жыл бұрын
Hanging Pawns that is good, the important part is that you figured it out. Endgames are what I study the most. I find that thinking about endgames geometrically and mathematically alot of theoretical draws make sense. In the video you struggled with the lolli position, when I looked at it I could tell it was a draw simply because an additional file was needed to win on the left. And if you are wondering about the rook file, this does not work because the only places the king can move is to rotate so the king is forced into a loss. The Reti study will demonstrate what I mean about thinking of endgames as mathematical geometry. A lot of endgames work in a similar manner. The endgame book that I used to learn endgames was the same book Magnus Carlsen used. Fundamental Chess Endings by Karsten Müller and Frank Lamprecht. Practical chess endings by Paul Keres is good too. I personally think you could benefit from doing more practical chess studies. Tigran Gorgiev has a book full of them. He was considered the best composer of practical studies. Keep up the good work! This is still my favourite chess channel, the quality is phenomenal!

I was wondering why you cannot play Rd7+ like if the black rook was on e3 at 5:54. I finally understood, but it is so subtle... Rd7+ Ke8 Rb7 Kf8 Rf7+ Ke8 Rf4 Rd1 Rg4 and black has Rf1, because the white bishop doesn't control f1, but controls f3 in the line with the black rook initially on e3 (5:47). Brilliant ! Tanks a lot Stjepan, your endgame videos are for me the most instructive ones on KZbin !

Great video as always! May i request that perhaps you could explain the following endgame in a video ? i think its a draw but i seem to bungle it everytime: 3 connected pawns (f-h) and a rook vs. 4 connected pawns (e-h) and a rook. ty
@HangingPawns4 жыл бұрын
Oh. That's coming up soon. +1 on one side of the board is a draw but with good play. And sometimes it can be winning if the defender's king is badly placed.
@noahcrow89824 жыл бұрын
Basically to draw that you trade down all the pawns so there is only one left, then you transpose to a Philidor position and draw it. The key principle is to not let the side with the pawn majority to extend too far or else you will not be able to transpose to a Philidor.

i think you are missing the fact that: 15:46 black can check the king on B file (bishop doesn't cover it) 15:47 black can't check the king on D file (bishop is covering it)

Love your work dude, can you do a video on kings indian attack vs french defence
@coryharasha3 жыл бұрын
I believe the problem with the knight file is that you can't force the black rook to the third rank by moving the white rook to the opposite site of the board as you were saying. The black rook can just hang out in the first and second rank with checking opportunities.
@nabin69764 жыл бұрын
The reason why its a draw on the knight file is because white rook doesnot have enough space to get to the other side of the king. Lets say you force the black rook to the third rank and stop the ckecks which you can always achieve with precise play. Then at some point to mate black you must transfer your rook to the other side of the board. When the king is on the knight file if you could play R(0)7, (0 is an imaginary file to the left of a-file) then you would mate him on the next move beacuse Kc8-b8 would be met by R(0)8 #. But you simply can't amd must play Ra7 in which case black king goes from c8-b8, covering a8 and white cannot achieve checkmate. That is all there is to ot, really.

i FIGURED IT OUT! Normaly, after we play a waiting move to exile rook from a 2 rang and it goes to first rang, we move our bishop to a squere from witch it prevents any firs rang's checks but on a knight file we can't do it becose suddenly a board has ended so we don't have access to a squere on witch we wanna put it.

The world's longest game actually had this endgame!
@DonaldSjervenE4 жыл бұрын
On a knight file there may not be enough space to go back and forth on either side. Original sequence had the bishop covering the b3 square. With kings on the b file that square would be (a-1)3. It doesn't exist.
