Fun fact if you don't have a rooster around, it's possible for a hen to essentially change into a rooster! She can get a bigger comb and waddle, grow spurs, and even start crowing! She can't fertilize eggs but she can tidbit and keep her flock safe! That said i love having roosters around. I don't mind their crowing, and i love watching them with their girls. I watched one've my roos chase off a hawk perched on the fence, literally jumping up to attack him. I'm actually hand raising a sweet little rooster right now who comes to me for treats and flies to my arm and loves being pet and praised. He's super sociable i can't wait to see how he turns out as an adult. And I've had human aggressive roosters, but ah. I'm one've those people who's very good at teaching a rooster why that's a bad idea lmao. I've never had a rooster stay aggressive long. It's honestly disappointing 😅😂😂

We had two roosters at my parents place before I left Texas. One was named Batman, one was named Joker. You can guess their personalities based on their names, but Batman was the straight cop. He didn't pick fights, he kept the hens from fighting, he'd keep the goats away from his flock, and he'd even break up fights between cats. Joker, on the other hand, was the wild child. He wasn't violent in the sense of wanting to "Harm", but he would pick fights with anything and everything, posture was everything to him. He wanted to show off to the ladies, and Batman knew it. He'd pick fights with us, he'd pick fights with cats (and even win, though it's mostly because our cats just didn't want to hurt our birds). Well, an interesting dichotomy arose out of that. See, Batman knew we were the ones that fed him and the flock. He also knew that we'd start fighting back if Joker went too far - but not whether we'd decide to turn on every hen and rooster. So if he saw Joker posturing at us, he would charge across the field, fly over fences, anything he had to in order to get Joker away. And Joker, wanting to start trouble but not actually cause harm, would flee rather than fight Batman. Joker once picked a fight with one of our moody mama cats, and she basically took him down the way she would a regular bird, except she didn't hurt him. Just brought him to the ground and held a paw to his neck, before releasing him. He looked at her. She looked at him. Joker backed up, and ran off a bit. He never picked a fight with her again. He also became one of the only animals that she would eat next to, *because* he respected her space.

The greatest example I have for why having a rooster or two in the herd is a great thing is a story that happened a while back. Was in the back yard tending to the fruit trees and suddenly heard one of the hens screaming bloody murder. I turn around to see a freaking hawk on top of her. Out of no where two of my roosters, a big ol’ buff orpinton I named Blondie, and a big ol’ plymouth rock rooster I named Speckles come bolting and start attacking the hawk. They got it off of her with only a few of her feathers taken off and chased it off when it tried to go back at them. They are my two golden boys and have stuck around long after others have come and gone.

My alpha made a high pitched squeal, and all the hens and roosters stopped what they were doing and stood perfectly still. Me and my family got 9 chickens 3 years ago, and we had an issue where we didn't have a rooster. We learned some very valuable things from that. Our chickens were super sweet and kind when they were young, but as they got older, they got really mean. As they started laying eggs, they started bullying and pecking the others. At one point, one killed the other, and we had to coal the killer chicken. And the rest just got meaner as time went on, so we ended up giving them away to a chicken farm. Now we have new chickens and have 10 hens and 1 rooster, and they are all so much better. The rooster keeps the hens from picking on each other, and the hens have stayed kind.

My mom's ex boyfriend had chickens and two roosters that grew up together as chicks. The big brahma rooster took care of all of them. Even treated the other rooster like a hen by letting him eat first lmao. Raccoon tried to attack the coop one night, and that big guy fought it off without a single hen, nor the other rooster, getting hurt. Saved them all and lived to tell the tale.

A good natured rooster is just the best! They always put their ladies first and won't eat until they get all the best food. If they find a special tidbit they have a special sound to call the girls. They guard everyone and have other calls to tell the flock what kind of threat- to freeze or run for the coop. The gladly give their own lives to save the girls. Plus their antics- like the drunken dance they do to impress a special lady- or you- is hilarious! It is such a beautiful thing to watch them interact- and roosters are such big floofy beauties! You only need one rooster per 10-12 hens. If you've ever had a good rooster you'll never want to be without one.❤🐓❤️

I had some Wyandotte roosters who were absolute a-holes. During their first summer we let them pick who got eaten for dinner each night by who started kicking our shins first. A few other varieties weren't so bad. Our tiny 2.5 lb guy (i forget his breed) fought off an owl! We only lost a few hens, he had a big scratch on his wing and he had the great horned owl cornered in the pen when we work up in the morning. He was the bravest little guy, absolutely loved him.

We had a gorgeous rooster the kids names Kristoff, he kept our flock of 20 hens safe until Kylo Hen snuck off and hatched a clutch all the ladies contributed to, so we ended up with a Grey Gentleman named Gary, a Black name Buster and a white named Blizzard. Kristoff kept all the chicks safe from the hawks, crows and other predators. Eventually we had to build separate coops for each of them but they kept our flock safe until we went on a 4 day vacation and our flock sitter called the day before we came back and showed where a pack of something came through and killed all but Gary's mom Grumps, Kristoff and Kylo Hen. We revamped our defensive coops, and those 3 remained safe, but things were never the same without the rest of the crew.

I have 10 chickens 8 hens and 2 roosters! My alpha rooster does exactly what u said and he even shares 5 of the ladies with Jethro Bodine, his name is Foghorn Leghorn, I call him Foggy for short! He is smaller than Jethro but he has a gigantic comb and a lotta attitude and he runs the coop like a well trained manager! He protects, finds food, looks out, stops fights I love my alpha rooster 🐔 Foggy he is a great gentleman! Most roosters would beat dwn another for even thinking about coupling with their hens, but Foggy allows Jethro his ladies and Foggy has his own favorites but he watches out for everyone! It's fun watching them grow, change, develop their own lil chicken community, the pecking order! They r literally more organized and efficient than humans! If there is a fight, Foggy settles it! He is even half the size of Jethro, but as my husband always says, it's not the size of the dog, it's the size of the fight n the dog, but n this case chickens lol! And foggy is definitely the one with more testosterone, his comb is 3 times the size of Jethro's & his beard is 3 times as long so I knew he would b top dog, well top rooster 🐔🐓, Foggy looks just like the big ole rooster from bugs bunny who was always b n mean to the dog, or trying to get him a rich widow hen, whereas Jethro looks like this rooster emoji 🐓 and Jethro is almost 3 × bigger than Foggy, but Foggy is most definitely the alpha lol 😂 it's so much fun raising chickens! We said when we got um that they we're strictly for food, but when Foggy got sick, he almost died and I nursed him back to health by my hand for almost a month and I got attached to him! We had to keep him separated from the other chickens after that because all the other roosters we had were picking on him, he could handle his own n one on one but 5 or 6 would get on him at one time so we had to keep him separated from the others for a while till we culled the flock of all other roosters except for Jethro and the only reason we kept him was because he is pretty and my husband likes him! As soon as foggy was put back n the cage Jethro came and jumped on him and it took all of 5 seconds for Foggy to prove that he was taking over & he has been king of the coop ever since! I love my roosters u most definitely do need them if u want a healthy happy flock!

I once had a hen that HATED pecking order squabbles, the instant she spotted one hen stalking up on another she would jump it and get between it and the other until it backed down. The coop she was introduced into has two older chickens that were notorious for ganging up on another and she was in rough shadow, it didn't take long for that other one to have all her feathers back and always make sure she was near that he. The other two kept trying to bully the others and kept getting put in their place. She honestly controlled the pen better than the rooster and the rooster preferred her over the others. She never backed down, she never started a fight, and she never lost until a raccoon got her. Best Hen Ever.

Back when I had roosters one hen laid 2 eggs almost daily!! She's outlived them now, and she lays a normal amount of 5-7 eggs per week. It's a bummer, especially since all my chickens are my babies, but I'm glad she's still here at least

When I was a child we got some chickens. Now, these were chickens from a battery-cage farm. So when they arrived in our hen house, they had weak muscles, pale wattles/combs (seriously, they were light pink) and they had no idea what to do with themselves. The poor things just stood in a corner of the hen house. So we walked over to our neighbour (who also had chickens) and asked if he had a rooster to sell us. And boy, he taught those girls how to live again. He wasn't all that good with breaking up the pecking order, but he showed them where to eat, sleep, roost, go outside and back inside again, he screamed at hawks and he was a nice boy 😊 Those hens actually needed him. And those hens taught me from a young age how horrible battery cage raising chickens is.

A "roost" is a support a bird rests on and "to roost" is just to stand on a roost. Roosters got their name from Americans because they spend a lot of their time up on roosts looking out for danger to protect the flock. "Roosting" is also what it's called when birds gather on perches to sleep.
