Pro-Choice people tend to not consider it a human life until latter into the pregnancy, while Pro-Life people tend to see a fetus as a person very early into it's development This kinda leads to Pro-Choice people seeing abortion as an issue of one being allowed control over their own body, and not prioritizing (what in their eyes) isn't really a "life" yet. While Pro-Life people sees abortion as an issue of what basically amounts to infanticide. As the two sides tend to see it as *VERY* different issues with very different levels of severity, it creates lots of arguments where both sides often find it hard to rationalize the other's beliefs. Hence why it's such a polarizing issue

The game was banned in many countries, including Germany. I was under the impression that it was never impossible. Rather the only thing that makes it impossible is the technicality for when the word for removing it just becomes "birth". But there's never a point where a fetus is safe and invincible, not that I've heard of. And it's already hard enough getting through those 9 months without things going wrong. Doom's very off beat artstyle of 2.5D photography, claymation, and spritework really makes it perfect for creating strange uncanny imagery in my experience, I think that's part of the reason why horror is one of the more popular genres modders tend to take on when not creating purely action themed stuff. Seeing real life imagery like the photograph of a fetus as an enemy is jarring but it doesn't break your immersion like it would in other games. Sux that the design of the WAD itself has about the same amount of depth as a glorified Terry WAD, but Solace Dreams seems to be a much better and more considerately designed WAD, so at least something good came out of it.

Of all the creepy Doom .wads I've seen, this one has to be the most disturbing one I've seen in a long time. I've always been susceptible to horror based around exploring visceral and organic locations, like the organic level from the NES Godzilla Creepypasta or the story of the Mystery Flesh Pit National park, and the theme of abortion makes it just that much more horrifying.

That and mifepristone can be used to induce miscarriage/abortion when the fetus has died in utero but the body won't expel it, when the mother is in danger if the pregnancy continues, or for ectopic pregnancies (which can be pretty painful afaik and are life-threatening, could explain the wailing if you want to go that deep). There is a big (and very real) divide between two camps that think that fetuses are humans or not. I think I had seen a Spanish video talking about this mod...and well, it definitely was something. The mod definitely achieved to be extremely unnerving, the whole story trying to figure it out felt like a fascinatingly morbid ARG with the messages and everything the mod apparently tried to convey, and the controversy was...well, a controversy, but I still find amazing how, considering it as disowned or not, came off about the whole deal as just wanting to mess with everybody at the community (and boy he did), absolute madman.

Even though It's just a troll made to have no real meaning, I actually really enjoy this mod. I've always been fascinated with how people use the topic of abortion in creative mediums. This reminds me a lot of the SCP Tale "The Special Bond Between Child and Mother" and the vocaloid songs Begin the World Again and Balloon Syndrome. Zygo may have just made this to stir up controversy, but he gets a thumbs up from me lol

I don't know about the "most controversial" wad, I would argue that would have to be UACLABS. Disturbing in a different way, sure, and not necessarily controversial in the Doom community itself, but surely UACLABS has to be in another category entirely right?

uaclabs isnt controversial on its own, its the creator of the wad that makes the map infamous. I played it myself years back and yea, its just some amateur doom wad with slightly gorier sprites. No-one would care about the wad if it was made by literally anyone else.

Hm, that's true. I don't know how much you could really talk about it without it turning into a history lesson. There's not a whole of content to the wad itself. Hell, the text file may be the most disturbing part of the whole thing. Still, it's the very first thing that came to my mind when I thought of controversial or disturbing Doom wads.

I'm a woman gamer. I think this WAD is a prime example of a "yes" answer to the question, are video games art and should they talk about disturbing topics? I think it is important to make people consider not just their stance on hard issues, but also to get people talking about it. Is abortion ever okay? Should it be? Who takes care of a child if a mother has no means to? How does one deal with the mental pain of deciding to have an abortion? This mod explores some deep questions about reproductive health and the self, about what it means to take a life, even if that life is still developing. In that sense it puts a theoretically male player in the same shoes of a woman considering abortion, do they really want to do this? I think it's a powerful tool for spreading empathy for people who do opt to abort, as far from being cold-blooded murderers they are constantly considering whether or not it's the right thing to do. It's a difficult choice for many women.

christ, this mod is overblown. this has proven to me that people will get seriously outraged over anything. it's just a .png with some spooky noises. sure, the moral debate it hints at is a hot-button issue, but the mod doesn't really take a side or push a message. i've seen people on both sides of the abortion issue getting mad at each other, the mod, and everything else; it's kind of funny, i guess? a little sad that so many people can get worked up over a 5 minute video game map, though.

It isn't though. The real consequences of abortion come from restricting it. Forcing a woman to raise a child without consent is quite literally slavery. They are forced to have their life to revolve around the child, especially if they are not financially stable. If she is desperate enough, Illegal abortions can kill both the mother and the fetus, which undoes what you were trying to accomplish. This also does not take into account that if the mother's emotions are that strong, raising an unwanted child could lead to suicide, abuse or neglect of the child. Going back to whether or not the mother is financially stable, this could also be harmful to the child as both the mother and child could become homeless, or in the most extreme cases, starve to death, which once again, undoes what you were trying to accomplish. People like you need to take into account that people have their reasons for getting an abortion. Not just because they "feel like it". And even if that was the case, they have a right to feel that way. Raising a child is not that simple, unless you are prepared for one. And even if they choose to birth the child and give it up for adoption instead, that completely disregards how terrible the adoption system is. That, and abortions do in fact save more lives than they take away, as the example I gave beforehand shows. Advocating against abortion, only shows women that you think that fetuses' lives matter more than theirs do, and that you'd rather have a child suffer a miserable life or death, so long as they weren't already dead. Because the only thing you can process is that killing the fetus is murder, therefore it is wrong no matter the circumstances. Not to mention, completely disregard anything that happens after the child is born. But that isn't the case. So therefore, being "pro-life" isn't morally superior, and rather, makes you "pro-birth". Of course, I am not saying that there are no consequences to abortion. But those consequences aren't as big as you think they are. Rather, the women who get abortions experience grief and guilt, maybe even regret for doing so. Which only proves that they are not just doing it because it's an option. And why should the mothers be at fault for having a fetus inside them in the first place? Condoms can tear, pills can be faulty, both can be non-accessible, they could've been raped for all you know. So wouldn't forcing them to raise a child be victim blaming too? I don't know about you, but I think motherly slavery, illegal abortions, suicide, abuse and neglect, homelessness, starvation, the adoption system, and victim blaming are far worse and last far longer than feeling grief and guilt, or regret for something that legally, scientifically, and logically isn't alive and therefore isn't murder to remove in the first place.

You terminating the pregnancy is killing that unborn baby. After the child is born it's up to his environment is he lives, and not the conscious decision to end its life. I don't think that abortions should be illegal, but they should be highly stigmatized. As Hillary describes it, Safe, Legal and Rare. Provide free condoms and cheap morning after pills at pharmacies and planned parenthood.
