Jess, the companion planting benefits of basil are more than tradition! Basil has a root exudate called Rosmarinic acid (RA). RA suppresses phytopthora, a common cause of root and crown rots, in the soil of their intertwined root systems. Traditionally, basil is thought to improve both the color and the flavor of tomatoes. The more we learn about root exudates and the amazing communication between plants, microbes, and soil chemistry, the more we will know the science behind what generations of farmers before us knew from observation. RA also has human and livestock health benefits as an antioxidant. It is a benefit to chickens and is used in their feed when we add dried or fresh herbs to their rations or treats. RA is also found in oregano and rosemary, both known for anti-inflammatory qualities.

About that local honey: There are some who import honey in mass quantity, then bottle and label it “local”. Also, I’ve been told that “Arizona Wildflower” honey sold in some stores is actually imported. (I rather believe this, because Arizona simply does not have enough pollinators to support the huge amount of honey sold under the brand.) And some “local” honey may be local, but the bees are fed corn syrup to produce, because again, not enough plants to support their honey production. Genuine local honey, in order to help those using it for allergies, should come from bees harvesting within five miles of the consumers’ home (harvesting from the plants affecting allergy sufferers. Same is true of bee pollen or royal jelly for those who take it for the same purposes.)

I scrolled through the comments specifically to see if anyone brought this up. It’s something not everyone knows. Best honey is from your local bee-keepers. You want a single-source raw honey. Even the honey from the big box stores may come from an assortment of sources, all mixed together and bottled. It’s worth it to find a local apiarist.

Loved the tea! Thank you so much for this video 😁 Another way to eat your basil is with watermelon. It might sound a bit weird but it's soooo good. Easiest way is to just mix normal white sugar with fresh basil leaves either in a food processor or with a pestle and mortle and sprinkle over slices of fresh watermelon. You can also make a sugar syrup which you mix with basil leaves (strain if you want to, or not). First blanch the basil for a few seconds and put straight in ice water as the leaves keep their green colour for longer this way and gives the syrup a much nicer color. Super nice on watermelon slices, in watermelon juice or cocktails!

So I was so inspired by this and went out to my garden and picked basil, lemon balm, and parsley and MADE MY OWN TEA! To die for! I put ACV since I didn't had any lemons. Perfect 🥰

I made the tea last night and am having a delicious glass right now! I can't believe I've never made basil tea before. Thank you so much Jess and Taylor for doing this video 😍 I grew lots of lemon, lime and cinnamon basil this summer so I will definitely be making this tea weekly 🤩

I’m going to make some for my next batch. I drink only tea, usually peppermint, always organic. I have at least five kinds of ball growing right now. This is perfect timing. I’m very excited to try it! Thank you!

I can't wait for this to change my life!! I'm growing both blue spice and cinnamon basil and they are producing like crazy. I'm going to go harvest some basil and try this tonight when the sun starts to go down. Thank you so much for sharing!!! I make a pineapple pesto with blue spice basil and it's the whole reason why I grew so much this year but I definitely needed another use for it! So excited now. Thanks again!!
